Universal Onirim - Solitaire Card Game (By Asmodee Digital)

Discussion in 'iPhone and iPad Games' started by Boardumb, Apr 6, 2017.

  1. I've been hesistant about Asmodee games since most of them don't really seem like great single-player games. But this one actually feels like a good fit for mobile. Also nice to have portrait on iPhone but landscape on iPad!

Looking forward to whatever expansions exist for this.
It's picky I know but the animations could love a little faster...like waiting for the discards and shuffle over and over again when you just want to get on with it.

What functionality do the expansions add to gameplay and replayability? I never played the original physical game.

Unlike the weirdly compulsive normal Solitaire / Patience, this one doesn't make me want to replay it once it's been beaten. It almost feels like I completed it and that's it.

I like the premise and the rules and it's certainly clever, but will I pick it up again after a couple of run throughs? Probably not.

Interested to see if any add-ons will, well, add anything on to the gameplay.

Fun for an hour or two though.

This is a great game to be played in short bursts.

Some thinking is required on each turn but nothing too hard so it is perfect for that casual itch. I think the current game could get a bit boring if played for any stretch of time but played in short sessions it is a fun game.
Hopefully the game does well and the expansions also come to mobile devices.

I really appreciate the little extras that even high cost premium games sometimes leave out.
Such as individual sliders for sound and music, it works in portrait mode on your phone and landscape mode on your iPad, as well as the ability to save the game at anytime and come back to the exact same position.

Unbelievable value at the current sale price.

The fact it's only 0.99p and that the description says "Special launch price for a limited time. Only base game and solo mode are included" makes me think that any add-ons are going to be charged at a much higher rate - if that is the case, then it's a bit sneaky of them; lure you in with the low base price and just enough to tantalise, then sting you with a much higher IAP for unlocking the 'meat' of the game. Would rather be up front about it and pay a one off premium price to unlock everything.

I've heard there are no plans to even bring the other packs so don't think that was much of a consideration when pricing the game. Don't think the devs other games have done well so might be wanting to cut their losses.

That is really bad to hear. This game has a lot of potential. I can see how the basic game will be a short played game for a lot of people. The expansions would add some real necessary longevity to the game. Hope this basic version sells enough for the devs to port those expansions.

There really is potential here but the game definitely needs paid expansions for longevity and value. A good monetization plan would be to increase base price with each update instead of IAP, similar to Wayward Souls and Death Road to Canada.

    I'm enjoying this a lot for $1!

I do see the same issue mentioned by orangecan - when encountering the first Nightmare in the Tutorial, there is no way to proceed. The tutorial dialog explaining the next step just doesn't appear. I'm also on an Air2, so perhaps a bug affecting that device only. Regular gameplay is unimpacted so fortunately it's not a show stopper.

One other oddity, in my first game the remaining Nightmare count went down to zero, then a few rounds later I drew another Nightmare. Is there some scenario that can cause a Nightmare to be re-introduced to the deck? And even if true, I'd have expected to see the counter go back up to 1.

I've played a fair few digital card and board games on the ipad and not such a fan of this. The price of it is about right.

I was enthusiastic at first, but being like any solitaire game, it's about 95% luck and you rarely win (I've won once). That gets old.

  13. I dunno, I expected to get bored of it fast but I haven't stopped playing since I got it. Every time I open up another game, I get pulled back to it. There is quite a lot of strategy involved. And sacrifice.

You are rarely winning because you think it is 95% luck. There is some luck, true, but more strategy than you give it credit for.

After playing quite a few number of games, I think that chance is the dominant factor over skills when trying to score a win. I agree that there is a certain amount of skills involved (mostly to avoid making "dumb" moves), but in the end, chance still dominates. To me, this is more like playing a dice-based board game. You can master the game to a certain extent by knowing the rules fully and optimizing your current position, but this matters little if you keep having bad rolls (or hitting bad cards in this case). In a deck of about 70 cards, having 1/7 of the cards being nightmares cards seems too harsh to me. Even when I win a game, I don't feel the satisfaction knowing that chances play too much of a role in the win.

Ah - glad it's not just me having the problem. Has anyone got any recommendations for online guides or tutorials? I've checked out a couple but they've been quite vague so far

I do that as much as I can. I usually find three nightmares waiting for me there.

Pretty sure what's happening there is that there is text is waiting for you to step through before you can do anything, only you don't see it, so you can't.

    This video
is not the most time efficient, but a nice introduction to the game and its expansions - the latter part which will only serve to make you frustrated by their absence of the iOS game ;)
