Exactly what I'm feeling as I deleted 2 pages worth of apps, even the mini games of this games rivals most full version iphone apps I used to have! Yes , the bar has once again risen and I hope the devs are up to the task!
I believe in raw performance the PSP's GPU is still more capable than the 3GS's PowerVR SGX 535. PowerVR's figures for the SGX 535 @ 200MHz are 28 million triangles/sec assuming Apple is clocking it that high while the PSP does 33 million triangles/sec. Of course, the SGX 535's advantage is it's ability to do shaders which can probably allow the flexibility to do the PSP's effects be other means and do effects that the PSP just can't do. However, using shaders requires writing OpenGL 2.0 code which is not backwards compatible with OpenGL 1.1 and older iPhones/iPod Touchs requiring 2 separate code paths. I don't believe Rockstar has done this and not many developers have which is why the potential of 3rd gen devices seem largely untapped beyond just higher frame rates. The PSP also has a major CPU advantage, even compared to the 600MHz ARM A8 on the 3rd gen devices. The PSP's CPU may only be at 333MHz but it's an out-of-order core that generally gives major performance advantages clock for clock. And technically the PSP has 2 of these 333MHz CPUs although I think there are restrictions on how they are used. The iPhone OS is also inefficient from a gaming perspective since things like the multi-touch APIs steal too much CPU time according to John Cormack. In general, you can program a lot lower level on the PSP and so extract closer to theoretical performance. I think overall the PSP version has higher quality textures, like on the billboards, but the iPhones higher screen resolution shows off the textures it has to the best advantage. It looks like Rockstar was able to lower the texture quality while making the iPhone textures look a bit softer rather than blurrier, which combined with the higher screen resolution looks very good. The PSP textures may have finer details on things like the ground, but they come across too sharp, I want to say like noise, but that has a very negative connotation. As others have said, the PSP version has a better lighting system, especially noticeable at night. The shadows also seem to be better like under trees. And most notably, the PSP version has reflections on things like cars while the iPhone version looks to have flat textures. The iPhone OS actually doesn't directly support Anti-Aliasing and many iPhone games tend to have jagged edges so it'd be interesting to see what Rockstar did to reduce this. And I completely agree that Rockstar has achieved a very strong visual presentation on the iPhone 3G with the right compromises compared to the DS and PSP versions. Although admittedly, I've never played the DS or PSP versions live, only seem videos and screenshots, so my perspective might be wrong.
Okay, this might sound like a dumb question, but are there any major highways in this game like there are in the rest of the GTA's, because the videos only show small side roads??? Also, I've never really played a GTA game for more than 10-15 minutes, but is there really that much to do in free roam besides kill civilians and drug dealing?
The location is GTA4 in overhead perspective, every road, bridges, landmark etc found in gta4 is here! Amazingly so!
what about free roam, though? I remember when I played GTA4 there seemed like a lot to do in free roam besides kill civilians. Do you get that same feeling here?
Is it possible to SKIP songs on the radio when i'm listening to the custom playlist?? I'm getting REALLY tired of the same songs now. And i've been busted by the f***** cops two times now with 20K+ in drugs now. F*** DA POLICE! I'm currently having 150 dollars. BOOOO! Awesome game btw! LOL
First thing I did when I got the game was get about 60 songs together for the custom station. Stuff like Public Enemy, NWA, Neil Young, Cameo, Anthrax, Talking Heads, David Bowie, the list goes on, tried to go for the variety of the GTA stations. And then BAM! Every single time I opened up the game, the Public Enemy song would play, and I was like "ewwww". So now I just don't care about the playlist, but if they "fix" it (they may think it's not broken at all), I'll go back to making lists! But seriously, use iTunes DJ to put together something quick. I noticed that the playlists order the songs by the sequence in which you put them in (I originally thought it was alphabetic), but since I think most people probably put things in as they go down the list of their music, it seemed alphabetic. But iTunes DJ just makes a quick list and it ends up playing fairly randomly, just add a new list every time (and if you're like me, delete som of the songs from the last time because you're running out of space).
