Actually, the DS version now sells for $18.99. The PSP version now sells for $27.99. $10 is still a bargain, though.

That's funny. Now you know why Sony and Nintendo are desperate to set up their own download-only schemes: no used game market.

Saw a few people recommending this over the DS version. With the sole exception of saving $10 or a few quid, I can't believe anyone would suggest that, if you have both devices. Touch screen D-pad controls are a bad control method for iPhone games. Even the games that do it best aren't the most gracefully controlled, and furthermore it means covering half the screen with your thumbs.

I enjoyed the game on the DS (well, I only really played it for a couple of hours but got a bit bored of it and I don't really carry my DS around with me nearly enough to take advantage of it) but overall I'm not really a fan of these "ME TOO!" App Store Gold Rush conversions of games that belong on other systems but are shoe-horned onto the iPhone.

Vastly prefer original games that are designed with the touch screen in mind.

    Just my opinion of course.

Happy to post that this thing is GORGEOUS!! Not sure about the PSP version (having not played it), but it kicks the DS rev's ass. This thing seriously looks AMAZING on my 3GS! And I HAVE to point this out: THE CONTROLS ARE EVEN BETTER! It has all the content of the DS version (from what I've played, anyhow), it sounds better, etc... This is a no-brainer for fans of GTA.

And to think we though Payback and CJS were something to scream about. This game makes those obsolete. HUZZAH!

I wish they had made it more like Gangstar, which seems like a real backwards statement considering the franchise. I appreciate the work, but I for one am over the overhead view. Gangstar really shows the potential that could've been met with a real GTA release.

That's too bad cause your missing out on some real good stuff here. Only thing Gangstar might have over this game is graphics (but I personally love these gta graphics). I'm pretty sure gta has a lotbetter features(email, gps, PDA, lottery, safehouses) music, and story(I'm only 2.92% done after 1 hr!)

The overhead view is a throwback to Rockstar games of old. But besides that I think it's still a good way of doing it, the gameplay doesn't suffer too much.

Most iphone/IPT owners do not have/want a DS...so they are willing to compromise on optimal controls and welcome games that showcase the device's potential.

    In the end

ALL games are about gameplay and I'm sure this will provide great entertainment. I was just concerned that they didn't see the opening to completely blowout the appstore with a REAL GTA ala Gangstar. Imagine if this had happened. Maybe they have one in the works, who knows?

Wow, this is awesome! I never really expected them to bring the GTA franchise to the App Store! So basically this is a full port of the DS version? I ask because the game is 188MB and the PSP version is 500MB+.

EDIT: Actually, are all the radio stations still there?

Everyone who is doubting the overhead view of the game really needs to realize that Rockstar knows what they're doing. I played through almost the whole game on the DS and it was awesome. The iPhone version is even better, as you can actually see what's going on with the higher resolution display and it doesn't take forever to load like the PSP version.

Don't have a DS, so I can't speak to it, but I've never felt that the controls on the PSP were "optimal" in any way -- certainly not for the 3D shooters that are a staple of that platform.

I guess that's obvious from the response in here. It just seems a bit of a shame it's stuck with on-screen D-pads and buttons, but good that more people are getting to try the game I suppose.

Another thing I don't really enjoy is full length 'proper' games on the iPhone. I find that the only time I spend gaming on it is when I'm on the tube, or in a break at work, and that's never longer than half an hour tops, so I just can't get 'into' longer games. I've tried Civ Rev, Sim City, Settlers, all the big names, but they languish unplayed after the initial hour of play time, and I go back to things like iBlast Moki or Drop7.

Guess I've learnt my lesson, gonna have to avoid the Download button for this one, much as I'd like to give it a go!

    The controls work fine.
