This game is just a zen meditation with some of the most beautiful art, endearing music. This is like happiness in an app. I've never felt more at peace and happy playing a game. I could best compare this to Spaceplan in its subverting of genres, where spaceplan was a clicker that wasn't a clicker, this is kind of a point and click that's not a point and click. Where spaceplan was witty, funny and absurd, this is heartfelt, endearing and full of love and simplicity. There are no words. It's a game that lives up exactly to its title. It is nothing more and it doesn't need to be. There is a game there, and it's a very good one albeit very threadbare, but it all just works. It's wonderful. There's so much polish on it, but it always feels close. It doesn't feel like it's looking down on us, we are there with it. Do not go on expecting deep gameplay or a written story. You won't find one, the game is simply focused on your journey and allows you to reflect on life. Especially if you're getting older like me, this is a must get. Spaceplan fan here, play it with family. The game gets us. And this? Some of us have been playing for decades, and have done every kind of game there is. It's nice to see this kind of game, which speaks to the meditative introspective side that everyone needs to experience sometime. And just for myself? I like watching a character who looks so much like my husband. andsoitgoes Well-Known Member Jun 30, 2010 2,673 58 48 In a van, down by the river! #12 andsoitgoes, May 18, 2017 It just keeps growing and growing on me. I'm almost done and while I don't want to stop, I don't want it to be over, either. I love that it's not a complicated game, there are very few situations where it takes long to actually figure out a route to progression, but the solutions are always pragmatic and straightforward, there's never some complete bonkers solution that makes no sense. And the little touches, just the way he takes off and puts his backpack back on - actually, I know exactly what the art style reminds me of - Studio Ghibli. They are, bar none, one of my favourite animation studios out there, and have been a huge cornerstone to building a movie language between my kids and I. When they were barely able to talk, they LOVED Totoro. We would watch it over and over again, they never tired of it and even to this day are just glued to the TV when it comes on. We tried to introduce it to their friend's younger sister (about the same age as my girls were when they first watched it) and while she couldn't be bothered, they were still just enchanted. But I digress - It's the details. One great example from Studio Ghibli that I can relate is when Chihiro from Spirited Away is going to put her shoes on after helping the old man out. In most animated films, they'd just have her put her shoes on and leave, or not show her putting her shoes on at all. But here, she slips her shoes on, runs her fingers around the back to make sure they are on properly and then just before she leaves she taps her toe to give that final little assurance that they're on perfectly. It's little touches like that which shine in this game. When he takes his backpack off, it's done with such deep purpose. That act is intentional and it connected to me very deeply. Something as simple as making sure we see that even though it's turned away from us, even though it may not actually mean anything of real note had we not seen it, they don't hesitate to make sure we see him slip off the backpack from his opposing shoulder. That means he usually has to also move something from that hand to allow him to do it. I shouldn't say more, because all these little touches are important to discover on your own. Also, watch Spirited Away. Then, when you've done that, watch everything else Studio Ghibli has created. Some of it won't hit in the same way, but even slightly less known features like Only Yesterday (which was just recently released with Dev Patel and Daisy Ridley who were just great) which, while they have no fantastical elements and could very easily be a live action film, would not even remotely work as well in that format. Looking back on any films like that, such as The Wind Also Rises, I would not have connected with them if they weren't animated. And Spaceplan. Man, I need to go back to that game and actually take my time with it again. It was truly something spectacular. So funny but yet so important, there's a lot of depth in a game like that and it has NO right to be that deep. Between Spaceplan, this and Artificial Superintelligence (to quote an article - Reigns meets Silicon Valley) - Gaming is just nailing it this year. It could end now, and this would probably be my favourite year in iOS gaming since Sword and Sworcery released. Also, if only it were as easy in real life to travel like in the game. I am jealous of the Old Man. andsoitgoes Well-Known Member Jun 30, 2010 2,673 58 48 In a van, down by the river! #14 andsoitgoes, May 18, 2017 Last edited: May 18, 2017 Just finished the game. Truly a beautiful, amazing experience that I won't forget anytime soon. It's short. I don't know how long I put into it, but even more than spaceplan I didn't care. It was worth every penny I paid and then some. This is not your standard gaming experience. Don't go in expecting a ton of extras or heart racing gameplay. Don't expect to get confronted with super challenging puzzles. Just go in knowing it's a game crafted with so much love it oozes from every spot in the game. One interesting thing is that even though it was shorter than Spaceplan, I don't feel this weird drive to want "more". I got what I needed and I don't need anything more than that. I couldn't have asked for a more engrossing game, and if you have a 7/7+ I'll tell you right now that haptic feedback is really nice. It adds a layer of complexity that just works. 5/5 easy. houseofg Well-Known Member Patreon Bronze Oct 1, 2013 1,611 82 48 #15 houseofg, May 18, 2017 Last edited: May 18, 2017 Oh wow.
