In a way it's a similar model to the MMO games. The casual players get to play for free whenever they have some spare time....the hardcore players will spend money to instantly replenish a stat instead of waiting. Basically it fuels the addictive tendencies of competitive/impulse players.
This a strange question... can you have more than one gun with you in a round? I haven't seen anything about swapping weapons mid round.

I'd be more than happy to pay for energy cells out of principal really. They'll be releasing the game free, and if I enjoy it, i'd want to help keep the servers running by paying for DLC / Energy. It would've been a game I certainly would've paid for.

Buy using in-game credits, not cash. But I believe you can only unlock the option to buy certain guns after X amount of play time and level-ups. EDIT: Added you as well
You have to have a Plus+ enabled game and then it'll prompt you to make an account or click the Plus+ somewhere in the menu screen.
Download any Plus+ enabled game - plenty of ngmoco's free games have it - then just follow the instructions.
you unlock the ability to buy them with in game credits after you get to a certain level; same goes for armor.
