Just a thread for Oculus Rift related stuff.

    A wearable, affordable gaming headset.

"Once set up, you can easily move your head around, and your vision parrots your actions inside the environment. Strapping on the Rift felt like stepping inside the mech's cockpit to take it for a drive. I was instantly absorbed in the small details of the game: looking up at the sky showed me the smudges of dirt on my roof window, and looking down I could see the dashboard with my health and ammo count. Because each eye is seeing a slightly different image, the headset mimics stereoscopic 3D."

It will obviously be running on PCs but recently the devs have hinted at other platforms:
"I think you’ll find the PS4, based on the specs they released, has definitely enough horsepower there to get some high quality Rift experiences.
You’re going to be able to have quality high-end smaller experiences in the consumer version, running off a tablet. Even potentially Ouya or the Ouya 2."
    -Nate Mitchell

Sony fatcat, Shuhei Yoshida, is also a fan
"We've got a couple of the development kits, and I tried it out and I love it," he told us in an interview this morning at E3 2013. Whether the PlayStation 4 will support it is another question. "No, it doesn't," Yoshida told us. Not yet, that is.
When we asked whether the company's planning on offering support in the future, he only offered a "No comment" with a big smile.

Star Citizen has confirmed it will be supporting Oculus :D

So its official consumer release hasn't been announced but:
"Mitchell said the Rift is "months, not years" away from being released, with a target $300 price range."

    Concerning game development:
""The challenging part about the Rift is actually designing a great VR game," he said. "So [user interface] is different in VR. Scale, visual identity; all of these things change. [Developers] port their games and it's awesome, but we think the very best experiences are going to come from those made-for-VR games that people are just starting to develop now."
That means gamers shouldn't expect a port of something like "Skyrim" or "Call of Duty" for the Rift. Still, every Unreal Engine developer has access to the Rift dev kit to create product for it, and Mitchell said plenty of developers have expressed interest. In fact, a demo designed for the Rift by CCP Games called "EVR" was named one of the Best of E3, which is impressive because it isn't an actual game

    :D
The good juicy stuff just keeps on coming. A couple announcements from E3:

Unreal Engine 4 + Oculus VR
"We’ve also officially joined the UE4 Integrated Partners Program, which means that the engine includes out-of-the-box support for Oculus VR. With UE4, Epic has raised the bar again with an incredible platform for next-generation game development. We’re excited to be a part it. Starting today the Oculus – UE4 integration is available to all Unreal Engine 4 licensees."

    VR Cinema
"We have one other small surprise that we’re tossing into the show: 3D VR movies.

Lately, the team has been enjoying the VR Cinema3D app built in Unity by Joo-Hyung Ahn at UXGround. Cinema3D allows you to step inside a virtual movie theater, find the perfect seat, kick back, and enjoy your movie in immersive, stereo 3D. A few of us have already watched feature-length movies in it. The size, scale, and sense of immersion is all there. It’s very, very cool."

Apparently Hawken is just insane with the Rift

    All up I'm sold :D

Cool stuff. I'll get a PS4 eventually, so I'm in favor of that platform. :)

The rift is the most exciting "console" of the generation for me. This is VR at an affordable price while still chock-full of features. Basically what I've dreamed of many years ago.

This is the first VR-related gadget that I think actually deserves a look. Usually they promise so much and deliver so little. The main downside here being that there's still no way of avoiding looking like a nerd from an 80s sci-fi movie.

There is already talk of the porn industry looking at the Oculus Rift to provide sexual "immersion". IMO it's probably for the best as after you're seen with one of the headsets on, your chances of getting laid are going to take a significant hit

Who cares? I mean, who will see you anyway? Speaking for myself, I do 95% of my gaming when nobody is around.

    Pretty much.
Except when splitscreening with my brother.
I already tought of an awesome idea. The console strapped to your back, rift on and the psmove sharpshooter.
    Killzone.
    Epic is achived.

I didn't say I care, I said it's true. You'll look stupid, but if you don't mind, more power to you.

Then again, playing any of these in first person with rift would be awesome.

Whoa! From one of the OR devs recently. This is the kind of stuff that will make me hold off on next gen consoles.

"I love consoles but internally we're a lot more excited about where mobile's going to go, and being able to plug it right into a next gen cellphone," he told us. "It's the innovation, and how fast cellphones are now improving – where we'll be with the next Galaxy or the next iPhone compared to where consoles are. Those things are almost doubling every year, compared to a console that's just stuck it out for eight years – it just makes us very excited. There's a lot of improvements that can be made on the hardware side for VR that no-one's doing yet because it's a new thing. The mobile rate of innovation is going to be able to make a lot of those improvements."

I mentioned this on the front page article already, but as cool as OR is on any platform, this doesn't excite me as much until mobile games start matching console games in both depth and quality. The idea of being wireless is great, but the most mind-blowing experiences aren't going to be happening on mobile... at least not yet.

Not sure what's spookier. That you predicted O.R or that we are all now beings from the future?!?!
