EA's Myths of the App Store
According to EA VP, it's time to bust some myths about mobile gaming.

At DICE last week in Las Vegas, Electronic Arts VP Travis Boatman strode on stage to detail what he perceived as the myths of the App Store basic misunderstandings of the space that cause outsiders to improperly evaluate it.

The numero uno myth Boatman wanted to shoot down was the misconception that all mobile players are on the run. False. According to NPD and EA research, the majority mobile gamers are playing at home on the couch and in bed. Here's how Boatman broke down the stats:

Home: 47%
At work: 17%
Commute: 12%
In line: 11%
Restroom: 7%
School: 3%
Airport: 1%
Other: 4%

If you ask me, that 7-percent for the restroom is very conservative. I wonder how many people were just too sheepish to admit they've played Angry Birds until their legs went to sleep.

Another myth: Mobile is strictly casual. After all, the majority of people that are not active mobile gamers now just associate Angry Birds with go-go gaming. But while Angry Birds is still the runaway success of the iOS generation (Tetris is still the most downloaded mobile game, screaming past 100 million), there is still plenty of room for other games, particularly hardcore. Boatman noted that Dead Space and Infinity Blade each rocketed to the top of the top grossing charts when they debuted in the App Store.

And for those us wowed by how good these games look and play, Boatman is confident that things will only get better. "Plants vs. Zombies, Angry Birds, Dead Space are just part of the journey," said Boatman. "I think in three years, you won't be able to recognize the state of the mobile industry."
