May need to do a bit of research on this but technically you dont have to support 2 systems, since supporting OF automatically supports GC (think their API does the legwork of reporting achievements and high scores to GC, and links accounts to the GC account in use.) I dont bother at all with OF, since I myself am not overly fond of its interface, but should your decision be made on support overhead, then that is something to check before you make your final choice.
well there are tons of games not using gc and still getting promoted.. devs who think just adding a few leaderboards and achievements nets them some +++ points for getting a feature are well.. to narrow thinking.. the game needs to appeal to someone over there.. not the feature list hehe sorry was not reading but checked out what you where talking about.. at the end one needs to know what game he is discussing.. annoying start up time? on a recent ios device?
OF can send the same data directly to GC if its properly setup on both sides.. and youre hopefully aware that you can change the interface of OF completlly to your liking.. you don't need to use their interfaces at all..
I keep hearing and reading that it is very easy to cheat with Gamecenter. Hack and upload your own high score, stuff like that. That would be a big negative for me. With Dave #1, I was at least able to log into AGON (now defunct highscore system) and delete fake scores. You can't do that in GC as of now. My scores were hacked by JB's though and it was pretty rare. With GC, apparently you don't even need to be jailbroken to do it. As an anecdote to the importance of highscore tables, my highscores stopped working months ago in Daredevil Dave, since AGON shut down. I haven't had a single complaint about it via email or in any reviews. In fact, I only noticed it when i tried to play the game and check the scores myself. Of course my game is nearly two years old, but it still sells daily. I thought highscores would be an important aspect to the game (maybe it was initially), but I think only a small percentage of gamers actually care.
Separate free and paid version - one combined GameCenter highscore? For our latest game we have a free version and a paid version. When we integrate GameCenter, will it be possible somehow to have a combined highscore for the free and paid app? I don't like the idea that there are two separate highscores because that would simply make no sense to split them. Any suggestions what we can do here? Best regards, Andreas
I would say Gamecenter for sure since its Apple official. People associate it more with the likes of Xbox achievements & Playstation trophies. I've spoken with many casual gamers and they all say oh yea I have Gamecenter("I like the achievements" or "the leaderboards are easy to get into") Usually when I ask a more casual gamer about OpenFeint, they say "What is that?" I'll personally continue to incorporate Gamecenter and mainly focus on achievements. I've come to the conclusion that a lot of people either use it exclusively or don't care about either one at all. Oh yea @schplurg I heard about the hacking too, that is a con. I've heard that once a game gets really popular the hacking starts to happen on the leaderboards. I personally haven't noticed it since none of my games are really popular yet, but that does sound lame.
i personally use game center , its much faster to implement. i am wandering is there any way i can get the globe higher score without going into game center
Jailbreakers could previously hack the game (mine) to change the scores, was a weakness in the system I used. After cheating got bad I made a simple algorithm that created a hash code when a score was calculated. If a score was uploaded that didn't match the code, the score wouldn't upload. That ended cheating. I also rigged it briefly so that if the codes didn't match that it would reset the game, deleting all scores and progress HAHA. I removed that functionality after a few days because I thought it could backfire. I got a few angry emails from cheaters too (like I care), but since I'm not JB'd, I had no way to test it thoroughly. Maybe honest players would get screwed somehow too. I will probably incorporate my own in-game highscore table, and use GC as well for achievements. Not sure yet, I don't even use Gamecenter myself. It won't let me login with my own name sometimes. I'm really kinda confused by that. If Apple would simply allow us to remove fake scores it would be helpful, or at least reset the table (or can we?). But, of course, that would be too easy. Apple seems to like to move verrrrry sloooowly. Why, a year and a half ago, they finally worked voice dialing into their state of the art phones! Wow! My old MetroPCS flip phone did that 7 years ago.
Does integrating openfeint helps with app discovery? Openfeint.. (now a.k.a GREE) .. anyone have any idea/experience? Say if I integrate it with my app.. does it help with app discovery? =0
In my experience OF has caused more customer dissatisfaction than anything else on Android - it crashes all the time and lots of people complain about all the extra stuff being installed. We also were promised (and recieved) a boost from their home page and upsell activities and it made not even a tiny bump in sales. We're not bothering with it in future Android titles. I think since being bought out that their future is aimed elsewhere. Not impressed at all.
With our game (Tapsteroids), GC results enabled (i.e. the user is logged-in) for only 15% of users. Maybe it is better for other sort of games. D.
This is not possible at the moment. Interestingly though, soon (with Mountain Lion) it will be possible to share Leaderboards across iOS and Mac (and play versus etc). So if this sharing isn't done via them simply having to use the same AppID, and instead uses some sort of iTC GC-link mechanism, then just maybe it will also be possible across Lite/Paid apps. That's pure speculation, mind.
I see there only one possibility, to have Freemium version. Free demo and with IAP unlocking full version, then you can have only one leaderbord. I suppose this is the idea why Apple do allow leaderboards just only per one app. 1) Apple wants you to use both: GC & IAP 2) There is less possibility that customers will request money returns for purchase by IAP (if this is possible at all, I don;t know, I haven't looking for money returns after I did purchase noncosumable goods like unlocking full app)
