I'm getting an Ipod Touch for Christmas and I figured I'd get a head start on downloading free apps from the Itunes store onto my computer. With that in mind:

1)Can I transfer apps from my computer to my ITouch or do I need to do it specifically through the mobile device?

2)Can I take these apps off of my ITouch later on to save storage space?

3)Follow-up to 1&2: How does Apple keep track of downloaded/purchased apps? How do they keep people from copying & redistributing them? If I get an IPhone can I transfer the apps I've purchased for the ITouch? How do I buy apps for a nephew if I decide to get him one?

    Thanks in advance.

    1) Yes you can transfer from iTunes to iPod

    2) You can delete apps from your iPod if you wish and redownload or sync back again whenever you wish.

    3) DRM. They know which apps you bought or not.

    that was quick. Thanks

So about DRM: if I get an IPod Touch for my nephew, and I buy him a few apps with my account, plus his parents buy him apps later on from a different account what happens?

Well you can't buy apps using one account and have them appear on another account.
If you want to buy him some apps, give him a iTunes gift card which he can use to purchase apps on his accound.

as far as i know an ipod can be linked to only one account but one account can be linked with several ipods. i hope that doesnt sound confusing but to put it another way just buy him a gift card.

Wow, thanks for telling me that. I was going to go get myself a $15 card because I'm not keen on using my credit card.

And...I peeked. 2nd gen refurbished, which is still amazing considering it was a last minute suggestion. Still wish I would have known because with the $10 upgrade to OS3 it probably makes the difference negligible.

PS: I'm an artist so if there's any developers looking for some help send me a PM.

wrong. i currently have apps from two different accounts on my ipod.

wait, what? 'you can only buy apps with american gift cards... in the american store' *fixed* many other countries offer gift cards too, which are usable in that countries store... ;) [i don't know about european gift cards though. i have read different things on that. it might be possible to use e.g. a french card on the italian store, but as i've said before, i'm not too sure about that...]

Yeah why would you think that only the us store let's you buy apps with gift card?

Edit: in relation to the account/device phenomenon, each device can only be linked with one device AT A TIME. You can, however, sign out of one account and log onto another on the same device, but to to update the apps you need to be able to sign in to the account with which the app was originally purchased.

    Hey Guys,
My Dad and me have iPod's and iPhone's that we both use and we are on different accounts. We have on multiple (1-2) occasions been able to put some of my apps on his phone or vice versa. So it is possible but it takes a little messing around and tricking iTunes!!! Which if you are interested can be fun :D

He's right. I did a quick search the other day and it appears that cards purchased in Canada are only good for movies and songs, not apps.

Anyway, I just want to double check on something and make sure I'm not wasting my time: I've been downloading apps to my PC. When I get my iTouch on Christmas, I can transfer these apps to it just like Mp3s...right?

woa, that's fudged up. why wouldn't they allow to buy apps with the cards? i don't think any other country has that rule...

yes. it's even under the same menu. you can also check wether to sync all apps or just single apps you want to transfer. believe me, when you get your device and connect it for the first time, most things (if not everything) will be clear.

Word. Thanks. I trust it has some way to organize apps because I've probably amassed about 300 so far.

Apple claims it's an obscure Canadian law that prevents software from being purchased with store credit, but it probably has something to do with saving $$$.

It'll be alphabetical, or you can spend about an hour sloooowly holding each icon then slooooowly dragging it across the screens until you find the place you want to put it.

Or you can spend about 10 minutes dragging it across the screens in iTunes!

    Sounds easy enough! Thanks.

One more question: can I run videos in the background while using other apps? This may sound silly but I like to play video tutorials and sometimes I just want to hear the audio.

do you want to run a video on the ipod and then use an app at the same time or do you want to run a video on your computer while the ipod is connected?

in short: if you have a non jailbroken device you can only perform one task at a time, i.e. you can only play a game or watch a video or use the stocks app, etc. [only exception is music. with newer firmwares it is possible to e.g. play a game while listening to music from your library if the game supports that option]

if you want to use a jailbroken device, there is an extension called backgrounder that lets you open several different apps at a time. [normally an app is shutdown when you exit back to the springboard]

if you want to play a video on your pc while the device is connected, there is no problem at all.

App and vid at the same time...I guess I'll have to jailbreak it and see how things run. Thanks.

well then try it with backgrounder but i don't know if it keeps playing the video or just keeps the app open. never tried it myself, because i never saw the need to have several apps open...

perhaps someone actually using backgrounder could elaborate...
