While I agree that you need to buy this NOW, I don't think it went downhill until after American Wasteland. THAW was the pinnacle of the series, followed by THUG1 and THPS2. The series flatlined when Proving Grounds came out. And yeah, anyone discover any sort of codes or any way to unlock Spider-Man? Otherwise I'll try to find a way to import PC game saves.
I agree THPS2 is the best in the series, but that's only because I played it when it originally came out. At that time, it blew doors off of everything else out there. And while the gameplay has held up well even by today's standards, if you started playing THPS games at #4 then you should know this game lacks some of the things that have become fundamental during the evolution of the series. THPS2 has no reverts, wall plants, Natas spins, etc. Grinds and manuals are the only way to link combos together (and I guess wallrides too, if you're that bad ass). So that means you can't just toss a bunch of button presses together and combo all over the level, but that's also good in a way. You can still pull off some pretty big combos, you just have to think about it a little harder and be clever. It's more satisfying this way IMO, but can feel like a downgrade over the games you're familiar with. And speaking of levels, this game has separate self contained levels, not big open worlds. Each level's still fairly large, and there's lots of hidden areas to discover. The level designs are one of the things that's helped this game still be fun all these years later, they're simply brilliant. I wholeheartedly recommend getting this game, but just want to make sure you're expectations are set appropriately.
I only have to more levels to get money and then I should unlock the cheats menu, probably later tonight.
I'm actually getting a ton of nostalgia from playing this in 1st grade on my N64 for hours a day... Man, this was the best game ever back then. I'm even putting songs from the original game back into the iPod version that I didn't like, like Cyclone. It's just not the same without those songs, even though I'll be skipping to Guerilla Radio and Blood Brothers almost every time. And can anyone give me the track list in order? I don't mean to be picky, but it's a nostalgia thing. I had one track after the other and it'd be kinda weird out of order.
Is anyone having trouble doing a manual right after coming off a ramp/air? I cant for the life of me go from the air right into a manual so I can keep my points going.
I'm actually having a bit of trouble with this game... The crappy D-pad keeps killing all my combos. I'd kill the Skatestreet comp, but every time I try to keep my combo going, I end up doing something stupid because of the controls and bailing. And Chicago was one of the best levels from THPS1 too...
I have no problem going from a slope or kicker into a manual, but if you're trying to go from a vert rap (a quarter or half pipe) into a manual, it's impossible. You need to revert first, which is something that wasn't introduced until THPS3. So if you want to go off a vert ramp, make sure you go big.
Game Impressions Fully agree with you, the game looks good and probably is fun on the ipad, but 9,99$, unless different proven, seems steep... I'll keep reading your comments and see if finally convinces me to buy ... but I love the game no question!
Game Impressions I'm loving it! It's been really challenging for me, though, as I don't have any experience with the console game. I definitely see how the touch of a real game controller would be much better for it. It's really difficult to get subtle movements. When Skater Nation came out, it was my favorite iPhone game yet. This one is much, much better in terms of content. Each level is about half the size of the entire Skater Nation map, and a lot about the physics is much more realistic (for instance, in Skater Nation, if you grind up a rail, you just keep going like you have infinite inertia, rather than slowing down and then grinding back down after losing momentum like in THPS2). I'm already losing sleep over this one.
I picked up this game after not playing it for almost 8 years at least, and I have to say it's been burned into my memory, I remembered where every goal, cash, trick, lip, everything, it all came back to me... The controls are seriously about as good as you can get them for a touchscreen... Best damn game on my iPhone!!! *Cheats* - BTW Just got 100% With Rodney Mullen... Unlocked one secret character, no extra levels unfortunately, and the cheat menu with all the char's you can unlock...
The controls were doing okay for me up until I started trying to get awesome combos. For some reason, even though I swear all I'm hitting is Left on the D-Pad and the Flip button, I'm doing something like a Kickflip to Indy or something like that. It kills my combo so much, and I'm really wondering why it keeps doing that.
Do you have a special move mapped to L,L,flip that's a kickflip indy? Maybe your accidentally triggering it? Or more likely you're having the problem I'm having. When I'm done doing the tricks in the air and am getting ready to land, I keep the ollie button held down in preparation for the next set of tricks. With the touch screen, I've found that I accidentally activate the grab button while trying to just hold down the ollie button. Then right when I'm about to land, my guy does a grab and just faceplants. Now I try to be really careful which buttons I have pressed down, but it's hard to keep your eye on it while playing.
By special move, do you mean the kind that is described in yellow text rather than white? Because it's just a white-text trick. Ah... you know what, that might be it. I hold the Ollie button down constantly (habit I learned from all the years I've been playing the games, myself), so maybe that's what's happening. My finger slipping onto the Grab button after initiating the Flip, when my fingers trying to readjust to its new position on the Ollie button?
