Official news: - New portable hardware - To be announced at E3 - Uses 3D w/o need for glasses - Backwards compatible with DS, DSi - Release BEFORE March 2011 Rumors from reliable sources: - 3D Stick - vibration pack - tilt sensor under decision - wireless connection speed up - battery life up - smaller than 4" screen
If games end up as pretty as that DSi game I'm sold. I kinda hope that's the tech they're using. Edit: referring to this, NOT the new hardware:
Yea it's pretty awesome. Kinda wonder how it's going to be like, and might really get one of those Nintendo DS systems then finally (was really tempted to buy one a few years ago, but never did in the end). Kinda love all those RPG games on it tbh!
That videos neat! Like i've said before, If they do the 3D feature, the time is now! Because now, it'll actually look half decent unlike the Virtual boy. Plus AVATAR in 3D made a whole poopload
Would've been nice if it played GBA games too, but I'm not complaining. Its your turn now Sony, if they're not impressive enough I'll go with Nintendo. Getting a bit bored of my iPod.
Except not. Nintendo of then is not the Nintendo of now. With the exception of the VB, Nintendo uses existing and fully established tech and then repackages it into a new form with the aid of their software. VB was a completely experimental project, not using fully established tools and tech and as such makes it an one-off in all of Nintendos videogames industry. So it is no surprise it failed. This 3DS is using existing and fully established tech so it is nothing like the VB, not least because it won't require glasses.
Sony is falling behind. Nintendo is still king of the portable gaming world though. I'm interested in seeing the "3D" without glasses though.
Problem with graphs like that is it shows no context. It doesn't show if there is cross-over, or anything. Simply put it can easily signify that the market has expanded further and so there is little eating into. The same thing happened when the DS and PSP launched, people were stating because of the 70 / 30 split the PSP was eating into the DS when it fact it showed the DS selling faster and more than the GBA, which had next to nothing in competition. Basically, the overall market expanded and Nintendo wasn't losing marketshare but gaining it.
As am I. I'm hoping it is just the same thing as that video shows, trying to emulate a 3D image that projects outwards from a screen could end up looking hideous and/or headache inducing. Creating a 3D image within the screen looks far more feasible and doesn't require any fancy optical illusions to work properly.
For better or worse looks like 3D and motion sensing is the future of gaming. I'm excited though since it doesn't require you to have those goofy 3D glasses. I also heard that this new hardware is as powerful as a GameCube, which is really awesome. Imagine a game with Wind Waker's visuals (*drools).
I'm a bit happy that things didn't go as Sony planned with the PSP. To me this means they'll try even harder with their next handheld and get things right. Had they beat Nintendo they would have probably been cocky and botched things up on launch like they did with the PS3. If this does have graphics comparable to the GC I would love a port of Tales of Symphonia. Make it happen Namco!
I'm really glad Nintendo is trying new things with the next DS. This will be perfect for those adventure reading/puzzle games (Phoenix Wright and Professor Layton 3D!!!) and it's one step ahead of Sony's patent for a touch screen PSP.
Absolutely loved that game... did you ever play Baten Kaitos? If the 3DS really does turn out to be as powerful as a Gamecube then as well as some great new games, Nintendo will be sitting on a goldmine of classics. The GC may not have been as successful as the PS2 but it had some killer games. I'm really looking forward to E3 this June to see how this turns out.
If the 3D is anything like that vid, then I'm sold. I can already see that device reinvigorating the adventure game genre (think Ace Attorney series and Myst, not LoZ which is action/adventure) the same way DS did by just introducing the dual screen touch screen interface. Seriously. Think about it. Imagine item hunting in a new Ace Attorney game (Phoenix Wright) using that kind of 3D. Hell, actually...negate my action/adventure comment. I could see this working very well in a game like LoZ or Metroid. And Mario platformers...imagine what something like this opens up in the platformer genre of games. ... I'm excited about this as a gamer.
Absolutely! If that video gives a brief indication towards the direction Nintendo are going, then I think it's a very clever move, and a one I'm onboard with. Either way, makes you wonder if Sony hold of announcing the PSP2 until they've seen the 3DS and then 'borrow' and slightly redesign Nintendo's ideas (sorry, I like Sony to be honest and love my PS3, but the PlayStation Move is ridiculous in how close it resembles the Wiimote and Nunchuck). These are indeed exciting times for gamers.
I've always thought, and still feel at times, that Sony should just merge the Playstation "family" into one product. What I mean is...portable/home system hybrid. The issue is that they went so "uber" with PS3 that this move is highly unlikely. So, best case scenario for Sony, and one they should've done long ago? The next PSP should not be just a portable game system. It should not be a mobile platform ala Android or iPhone/touch either. It should be both. There should be a standard line that is JUST a portable game system, and another line using the SAME internal tech but in the guise of a Sony Ericsson phone and a Sony Walkman. Two distinct markets (portable game system, mobile platform) straddled by one product. It's something that Sony can do that Apple most likely won't (as iPhone/touch, despite being a viable platform for games, is NOT directly positioned as a game system for a good reason) and that Nintendo will never do (Nintendo will NEVER introduce a DS phone or pmp).
