You know, as bad as this Nintendo situation is it's nothing compared to the events that led up to SEGA pulling out of the console market. I don't think people remember that the company had no presence outside of Japan from summer 1998 until September 1999. Majesco manufactured Game Gears and Genesis 3s don't really count. The Saturn was so toxic that Toys R Us was left with tons of those free discs after the promotion was over and gave them away with the purchase of any Saturn game. I wound up with multiple sets from buying games for $15 out of the bargain bin. I kind of wish I had picked up Fighters Megamix, didn't really think about it at the time. It took a rapid succession of failures to knock SEGA out, had they not released the Sega CD or 32X I think the market would look very different today. The only Nintendo failure that can even begin to compete with SEGA is the Virtual Boy and that didn't even knock the wind out of them.
The Vita might be better, but it's still going to tank. $250 + ??? For games (have we heard what they'll cost yet? I'm betting at least $40, but I don't know) is way too much for a gaming handheld. What's worse for Sony is I'll bet they are already taking a loss on the hardware, let alone what the loss would be once they emergency drop the price to $170. Parents aren't going to buy thir kids a Vita @ $250. The Vita is doomed even worse then the 3DS.
This 3DS selling thing isn't going too well. Apparently 4 3D games plus the device for $300 is still too much. I even mentioned they'd be getting 20 free eStore games, lol. Looks like I'm going to be keeping this thing after all. I guess it'll get better once some more first-party releases are out. Those are the reason I bought the 3DS after all. ----- I'm pretty sure the Vita isn't going to end up in the shithole the 3DS got itself into. There's a whole lot more going for it than the 3DS, and it's being aimed at a completely different audience. Sony isn't trying to sell it to kids who only play Pokemon. Not only that, it's actually a HUGE upgrade from the PSP unlike the 3DS from the DSi.
Nonsense. The PSP started at an MSRP $249 and still sold well. Not up to expectations, but still well enough to keep support around for years. It's certainly not going to tank, especially since the hardcore Sony audience will likely gobble it up. An Uncharted title will probably be enough to sell thousands by itself.
I have no real interest in the Vita or 3DS, but if say, Fallout 3 was released on the Vita, I would buy it instantly, and wouldn't care if there were no other good games after that. I would be happy because I had Fallout 3 in my pocket. This may not be the case for enough people - to buy a system for a single game - and it would have to be the right game to make a system succeed.
The Vita will do better because it will attract dedicated gamers. The 3DS doesn't really do that. A lot of casual gamers have adopted iOS gaming, so Nintendo cannot rely on that customer base to prop them up anymore. Sony, on the other hand, has never relied on the type of gamer that has now sworn its alligience to the iOS scene.
I'm like that as well, buy my Fallout 3 would be Tales of Symphonia. 3DS or Vita port? I'd buy it in an instant. No iOS port though, I don't wanna deal with the controls.
Well the big difference to me is I'm definitely buying the Vita the PSP was an awesome system and still is. Everything I've seen of the Vita so far looks great and yes the games will be as expensive as 360/ ps3 games I have no doubt but really you get what you pay for.
I just havent made it a priority to buy one, but I played Legend of Zelda on my friend's 3DS and I found that the 3D effect made an already classic game that much more great. Now that they've marked it down I'll probably try to buy one; even if just to help Nintendo out cause I love them so much
sad to see 3DS stumbling so soon, they really nailed themselves between the weak launch/post-launch and the hefty price. Years ago this might have worked (non-iOS world) but it's a different ballgame now. Nintendo can step up and they will, since Wii is out of the picture they can concentrate exclusively on pushing this device as their flagship once they get the ball rolling (and nothing else to deal with until the new console launches) Vita is really worrying me, it amazes me how short people's memories are. Nice device, nice tech, good titles, but same issue as mentioned above (hard sell in this iOS world). They'll probably sell a decent amount at launch, but a year out I see the thing dropping like a hot potato while 3DS struggles to maintain relevance (and probably beats it out with price/software, even if it's mostly 1st party). I don't want Sony to lose but I feel they are so out of touch - and they have too many irons in the fire (PS3, move, psn, experia, vita, PS4 development) to really be able to focus. PS and PS2 were knockout-punch combo but it's been a fairly dramatic slide since those days. If they seriously reorganized their business plan, they could be eating everybody's lunch!
I'll tell you why I'm not worried about the Vita, Bioshock Infinite on a cartridge. Show me one other piece of portable hardware that's beefy enough to run a modern FPS and has dual analog sticks. Even when cell phones do surpass the vita in raw horsepower they still won't have proper controls for console ports. Nintendo figured they had a lock on the market and kept the crappy resistive touch screen and failed to shove a second stick on there. Everything about the 3DS feels very "last generation" and I think when people see Super Mario 3D and Uncharted running side by side at in store demos the difference will be painfully obvious. Not everyone wants an iPhone or iPod and even those that may pick up a second piece of portable arch for extended gaming sessions. I think the Vita is going to see some moderate success early on propelled by the cross platform stuff that they're doing with the ps3. Also based on my experience with the PSP I doubt Sony will abandon the early adopters if they update the hardware. I'm sure the DSi and DSi XL burnout isn't helping Nintendo's case.
Yeah just keep it. I think 3ds sucks right now but I really enjoyed Zelda while it lasted and I still play Pokemon Black on it. Plus, I'm just waiting for the holiday season so I can get some actual new content instead of ports and remakes. I'm really looking forward to Kingdom hearts 3d to arrive as well. Anyways, I think this article is great: http://blogs.forbes.com/benzingainsights/2011/07/29/nintendo-admits-defeat-lowers-nintendo-3ds-price-to-169-99-as-apple-enthusiasts-proclaim-victory/
Rofl, that's all I play on there too..but I could have just gotten a DSi to play Black on. I've spent quite a bit of time with Ocarina of Time as well, and it's been really good so far. Sadly, I can't bring myself to play Lego Pirates and Dead or Alive when I have so many iOS games available. I think the 20 free games from the eStore should be pretty cool even though they're all pretty old stuff. Definitely hoping the holiday season makes owning a 3DS worth it as well. A 3D KH would be freaking awesome. It was my favorite series on the PS2 and my favorite RPG series. Don't want to buy the ones available for the DSi though since I told myself I bought the 3DS to play new games with the exception of Pokemon. Otherwise, I would have just gotten a DSi like I said, lol.
It's a shame :/ Haven't touched my 3DS for almost a month now. Ocarina of Time has been opened but not played... Though my GF did start it. Bought Star Wars III: Clone Wars and haven't even opened it. At least the system owners before the price cut gets the 10+ free eshop games (?). And I think they just renamed the Mario games to Mario Kart 7 and something for Super Mario 3D. Definitely excited for Mario Kart.
Lol, Lego SWIII is pretty terrible, sadly. Lego PoC is a lot better from what I've played so far. We actually get 20 free eShop games. Yeah, Mario Kart 7 3D should be awesome. Really wish it had been a launch title though. If you're going to play a game on the 3DS though, it should be Ocarina of Time. SSFIV 3D and DoAD 3D are pretty darn good fighters as well. But yeah, there just haven't been enough decent games in these four months since launch. They need some more console-sellers. There's like one or two right now.
That's the problem with Nintendo. When you said the best games are SFIV or DoA, I can play something along the lines of that on the iPod. Mario Kart will be awesome but I can get something like that with Sega Racers, Crash Bandicoot, etc.. I'm not saying it's a bad thing but the main reason I bought the 3DS is that I was hoping for a Pokemon Black/White in 3D. Mario Kart is awesome an all but sometimes shelling out $40 is too much compared to the iOS platform. Sometimes I wish they, the devs/apple, would charge more on iOS but in a way, I'm glad they didn't. Maybe it is the reason why I don't see the 3DS and maybe the Vita not doing well. Or maybe we all should wait for Christmas when Nintendo will be hot again. I have a feeling that kids are trying to earn money for the Summer to get the 3DS Anyway, I'm still excited for Mario Kart and Pokemon Rumble. Not too excited about the price cut for the system but maybe it will help Nintendo sell more (which it will..). Price cut on all games would be nice. Instead of $39.99, go with $29.99 like in the old days. It would save money in the long run, I think :/ And I think you are right. Nintendo should have waited to release the system with enough decent games out there. And rather then remaster games (I do hate that when Nintendo does it), and I still buy them lol.
+1 to this. And that's exactly why I can't bring myself to play anything besides OoT and Black Version on the 3DS.
Nintendo stop fighting the good fight, branch your franchises into the mobile space and make a buttload of money.
