I'm going to be picking it up Monday unfortunately. But one more day can't hurt. Can't wait to finally get it in my hands. I'm not picking any games up either since I don't think any of the opening selection are that good. I'll probably wait till legend of zelda comes out.
Obviously most of you will own an iOS device. Are you still happy with your new Nintendo 3DS, even if you compare it (what you surely don't necessarely need to do as these devices are different) to your iOS device? What do you think is the greatest drawback of the 3DS, and what's the best reason to buy one? How would you rate this device? Thanks.
Apples and oranges(personally) as far as a comparison. I knew, getting my iPhone as a gaming device, it still wouldn't fill or compare to the handheld gaming experience I got from the DS and that was years ago. Even with better games on iOS I knew I'd be getting a 3DS cause it's new and we know what to expect as far as content. Greatest drawback? Limited library. We didn't even get Professor Layton. The 3D effect is a pleasant addition to me. I haven't tried any games(retail) yet cause I'm waiting for toys r us to open for the buy one get one 50% off deal. Couldn't tell you why to buy it honestly. I bought it cause I love nintendo, it's new and shiny, I know what games are coming around, and I love nintendo? I saw pilotwings get announced and immediately knew that I wanted it. Device rating: 8. It was a 9 until I remembered there's no eshop. They kinda dropped the ball there. I got an extra $100 to use on games and these guys don't have their shit uP and running....
iOS doesn't have legend of zelda, 3DS has legend of zelda so yes im happy, yes if i compare it its good because it has legend of zelda, Greatest drawback it doesn't have 3 zelda titles awaiting launch right now(Links awakining is on the e-shop IN 3D ) Best reason to buy one is bacause it has legend of zelda and I would rate it 50 master swords out of 10 master swords
How does it compare to iOS? Well, I've always viewed the two as offering a different gameplay experience. I mostly use my iPhone for quick 5min games like 'Cut the Rope' etc whereas my DS was for much more in-depth and lengthy games. Naturally, after putting my 3DS through it's paces, it's easy enough for me personally to say that it will be my main portable gaming device. I still love my iPhone but in all honesty, I don't use it much these days for games anyway, I use it mostly as a phone and portable web browser. Just as a comparison in terms of games though, the only one you can really do at the moment is Street Fighter... after clocking up a fair amount of hours on SSFIV3D, I decided to reinstall SFIV on my iPhone. It's still a great game to be fair, but it's simply nowhere near what Capcom have achieved on the 3DS. The price difference is a fair enough point to make, but the sheer amount of content and overall polish of the 3DS version justifies the higher price to me. As pointed out above, the only negative I would say is the fairly lacklustre launch lineup. There's some decent games among it but the better games are still yet to come. Also, some may point to the battery as a negative too, it's certainly a valid point but given that I rarely sink more than a couple of hours in one session on any machine, console or handheld, it's not really an issue for me. All in all, I definitely recommend the 3DS for anyone whose even slightly interested. Whether you pick up one now or wait until more games appear, I don't think you'll regret it! At first I want to thank you for your replies. While I like Nintendo consoles, the handhelds were never really appealing to me. To be honest, my latest Nintendo handheld was the original GameBoy. If I'm right most of you get the system because of the games. I'm a huge fun racer addict, and while I like the iOS racers (CBNK 2, Shrek Kart, KartRiders, etc.), of course I know that they all combined aren't as good as Mario Kart 3DS will be. But while it's true that you can only get Nintendo games on Nintendo hardware, the iOS gaming market is evolving. There aren't only cheap casual titles, there are also tons of console quality titles, from Final Fantasy III to the upcoming Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing. That's why I'm curious if third-party support for 3DS will be different to the iOS market. Even though I'm still using my Wii, I have to admit that -and I watched every Nintendo 3DS keynote- I'm not really convinced of Nintendos new handheld. If I take a look at the launch game reviews, then it's obvious that most games are rather mediocre. And I have the feeling that the 3DS itself doesn't seem to be as polished as it should (missing e-shop, etc.). I think it will be interesting to see how often Nintendo will update the system, how the new e-shop and the prices will be like and when the blockbuster games are coming. Maybe I'll get a 3DS in May or so. Some more questions: What's your impression about the hardware itself, does it lie comfortably in the hands? How about loading times compared to iOS devices? Do you always use 100% 3D effect, or do you turn it down to 50%, for example? Thanks for replies.
I picked up the cosmo black one today with tom clancy's ghost recon shadow wars, street fighter, and nintendogs+cats(it didn't seem right to me if I didn't buy it because I remember all the fun a had with dauchsand and friends
The hardware in terms of comfort is pretty much the same as the DSLite and DSi, the only difference is that the top screen sticks out a couple of millimetres, certainly nothing to worry about (it still fits nicely in my pocket). The loading times seem quite short too, normally only taking about five or so seconds to load, though it's worth noting that I only have SSFIV and Pilotwings so I'm not sure about other games. As for the 3D effect, it seems to depend on the game. I have the 3D up 100% for SSFIV and the preinstalled games on the device such as Face Raiders but for Pilotwings I have to have it set between 50% and 75% because the 3D seems a bit too strong on 100% for me personally.
I told myself I wouldn't get a 3ds right away, but somehow I ended up owning it along with SSFIV. I'll probably get nothing else until with Zelda, Mario Kart, or Layton.
happens to the best of us. I have a Japanese released set, even. Patiently waiting for Zelda series, Mario Kart series, Prof Layton series, Pokemon series.. Oh and Final Fantasy Tactics!
Anyone who even mildly likes the Asphalt series should get Asphalt 3D! While the game is basically Asphalt 5 in 3D, the results are AMAZING. You know how you usually grab power-ups in Asphalt by lining up with the approximate location of the power-ups and then running past them? Well, now you can see PRECISELY where they are. In fact, you can get within inches of passing vehicles based on visual judgement alone. Take-downs are a snap! Again, if you even passingly like Asphalt, you NEED Asphalt 3D!
Pokemon? It will take a while since Black and White came out this month. Mario? I'm crossing my fingers that it will come out at the end of the year.
I don't think the bad reviews are gonna make people want to buy it. If you can have only one, Ridge Racer should be your racing pick.
Perhaps. Honestly, I would hope that most folks know not to listen to sites like IGN and Gamespot by now. Especially when it comes to Nintendo games. I remember bad reviews of both Excite Truck and Just Dance. (The latter of which IGN couldn't give a low enough score, they panned it so bad.) I haven't seen the complaints reviewers talk about. E.g. Take-downs and crashes seem plenty smooth. (Though intentionally slow motion) And the impact of the 3D can't be overstated. If you've played any of the Asphalt games, you know what you're getting. Except I guarantee this version is 10x more awesome!
Well, let me tell you that I'm happy for you. It's great that you seem to have so much fun with Asphalt 3D. You wrote that you don't really trust IGN. But I think the IGN review of Asphalt 3D is at least a bit disillusioning. I mean, a rating of 3/10 ("truly horrible") mixed with the statement that any iPhone Asphalt game would be better is really kind of an intense conclusion. But I think it's not just IGN, Metacritic says that seven reviews have an average rating of 42/100. Could be the lowest rated launch title if I'm right. So if I had to choose, I think Ridge Racer would probably be a safer bet. But still interesting to hear that you're so hyped.
Thanks for posting this. I bought it on 03/22 as my first 3DS game and have been a little put off by all of the reviews. I actually liked the iOS version and this looked to be the same, but with physical controls and 3D of course. Still waiting for mine to show up from Amazon and cannot wait to try this out along with my other release titles. Side question, has anyone else purposely avoided seeing a demo unit just so you could be wowed when you got the system?
