3D, all and good, but from endgadgets review the cameras are worse than the ones on the iPod Touch 4. And the iPod Touch 4 really isn't good atall.

Nintendo's model of pandering to the casual gamer it outdated, because when it comes to attempted to attract a casual gamer base, it is literally impossible for anyone to compete with the iOS platform. iOS is king. If you are stupid enough to take on Apple in the arena of casual gaming, you will get crushed. However, not everyone is a casual gamer. I am not a casual gamer. Most people who own 360s are not casual gamers. There is a massive contingent of so-called "dedicated gamers" who are largely ignored and overlooked by apple's structure and pricing model.

Put it this way. Homefront, a brand new console IP from a relatively unknown developer sold 350,000 units on it's first day of release. Black Ops is now the highest selling video game of all time. There is a dedicated/hardcore gaming audience out there yearning for attention. Nintendo must make more of an effort to appeal to this audience in order to survive. Apple has no interest in attracting these gamers to their product.

Pilot Wings Resort is an aberration. Why it's an aberration? I don't know. You'd have to ask the developer on that. But look at the amount of content included in Ridge Racer 3D. Compare that to the amount of content offered by the iOS version of Ridge Racer. Then you will understand the concept of "Content is king." Indie developers tend to offer a reasonable amount of content in their iOS games. Sometimes they even go overboard, like with Aralon and Mission Europa.

The issue here are major multi-platform developers, who tend to provide very little content in the iOS games that they release. It's hard to blame them, considering how low the bar has been set in terms of Appstore's economy. You will probably recieve 3 or 4 times more content on average from 3DS games then you get from iOS games. Again though, I'm only talking major developers here, like Konami, Capcom, EA, Square-Enix, Sega, etc.

Pilotwings and that other "Steel Diver" game are games lacking in content because, well, they are low tier launch games. I don't want to excuse Nintendo because it really sucks that they didn't have a stellar launch game like they did with the N64, or the Wii, but I also find silly to complain much since the "content is king" games are coming soon. Just as an example, that Zelda Ocarina of Time 3DS is going to have easily around 60 hours of gameplay at the very least. If you are the type of person who appreciates that type and quality of content, then you'll get the 3DS because you'll hardly find that on an iOS game.

Not having a stellar launch game was almost certainly very intentional. They don't want to have the 3DS end up like the Wii, with pretty much the only good games being first party. So they are taking a back stage and letting 3rd parties have top sellers from the start, which they wouldn't be if Super Mario 3DS was there. They'd all get swept under the rug. I expect that the Wii's sequel will get a similar treatment whenever it is launched.

Yeah, that's definitely a better idea than just making lots of great games.

It actually does make sense. Nintendo said that they wanted third parties to be the ones to get the attention at launch. They could have easily rushed any of the many games they have coming out for the system (Mario, Animal Crossing, Star Fox, Paper Mario, Kid Icarus, Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart) if they wanted, but since they know the system will sell like hotcakes anyway, they decided to wait.

Picked up a Cosmo Black 3DS with 'Super Street Fighter IV' and 'Pilotwings' this morning here in the UK. Unfortunately, I'm at work until 5pm so it's sat in my staff locker until then... it's killing me that I've not even been able to open the box yet!

Trying to hold myself back from buying this - probably will get a PS3 now as I've been delaying it for so long and need a Blu-Ray player, then get this when the Red Version is out or when the next release comes along :)

    getting paid....
    Sunny South FL!!
I'm glad nintendo is giving third parties a chance right out the gate to build some steam, but not at the expense of their own IPs, thats ridiculous. Reason is this: nintendo is not a rinse and repeat type company when it comes to their first party games on each specific console. Were getting one pilotwings, one Mario kart, one star fox, one smash bros(I pray)....and that's a problem. They just threw out 2 games with minor content, 2 games we'll never see again on this console. And after waiting so long for a new pilotwings, it's kind of sad.

Granted, im a first day buyer and I welcome all games that will appear from the house of Mario, I just hope they keep the ball rolling. They have enough strong first party title to literally release one every month for at least 2 years. I doubt they'll do it but they have the ability and shouldn't waste those titles....

You can do 3D with an iPhone - just printout your own AR cards (can get the PDF from Nintendo website) take two slightly offset photos of them, stick them side by side and voila! 3D without glasses ;)

(just look "through" the screen, but try to focus on it, to get Koopa to pop right out in true augmented 3D :) )

Just picked my 3DS up! Got to say its a sexy beast but that comes at an expense, it's a big fingerprint magnet. Picked up PES and super monkey ball, both of which show the 3D off very well, so far I'm preferring PES as Monkey ball in the early stages just feels like a controlled video, no chance of falling off but that should improve. I'll post soome better impressions later.

Yeah it's what you'd expect, the player cam is cool but not long term. No multiplayer is disappointing but master league makes up for that which has so far been as good as ever.

I have no huge interest in buying a 3DS but Amazon has some fairly enticing pre-order deals going on right now in the US. Free case, $25 off the first launch title and $10 off each one after that. You have to wait 2 days between purchasing the system and each game for the promo to go through but $45 total for SSFIV and Ridge Racer is a hard deal to pass up. I would snap up this offer in a heartbeat if I wasn't planing on buying an iPhone 5 in a few months and need to the money. My tax refund just came through, I'm almost compelled to just say screw it and drop the cash. That's how I ended up waiting in line for an iPad last year with no intention of buying one beforehand.

There's also a Tom Clancy game that I thought was going to be a crappy gameloft game like the iOS version, but looks like it turned out to be a pretty good game. It's a strategy type of game developed by the guy who did X-Com. It's getting good reviews too.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon? Yeah, although it's not my kind of game, reviews seems to be rather positive, especially given that it originally started as a DS game and was later moved to 3DS with little enhancements made to the visuals.

I'm loving SSFIV at the moment and so far I've been pretty immersed in Pilotwings, I can see getting a perfect score on all challenges being a tough task indeed!

It's been fine for me and I've clocked up a fair amount of time on it since yesterday. In fact, I've just turned it off only because the very polite instructor in Pilotwings recommended I took a break because I'd been playing a while.
