So i came across an awesome surprise - a beautiful, emotional fan made trailer for BrightRidge. I have to be honest - it feels like you've made it when you get a gift like this. To reach people for even a moment is a huge motivation for why make games, and to know that BrightRidge can ouch some people even after they've put it down really fills me with joy
That trailer is amazing! Also that hide and seek idea is wicked ! As long as multiplayer be optional and the app still be offline playable when needed, I'd pay for that feature, always looking for live games that me and my friend would could fun playing when we are online, hide and seek, maybe even Tag some kinda player customization to tell us apart? Just adding into the pot of future ideas.. Just ideas ^-^ ideas are great..
Hey Protopop, throwing my crash info into the mix - crashes every time in the lightning storm scene in the first adventure. I'm on an iPhone 6 with OS 10.2.1. Was going to delete the game, but since you're so active here and seem to have a plan for fixing it, I'll hold onto it. Really beautiful game!
Thank you Artfoundry for taking the time to find this thread and say hi Yeah, that storm scene is pretty heavy as is. But the real issue is revealing itself as IOS 10.2.1 - there are more than 10 times the crashes with Unity apps on it - it has to do with Metal technology, which is what i use for the phone. The fix is to not use Metal, but unfortunately that would mean the game wouldnt work at all. So for the time being im able to update and optimize the game, but it wont stop crashing on IOS 10.2 unless apple fixes it in 10.3 or Unity (the software i made the game in) gives us a patch. its very frustrating because it is out of my hands, especially at a time when so many people have tried the game. I have learned to be zen about what i cannot control, and focus on what i can - right now thats some new features, and the Android and Apple TV versions which i am working on now. The scene you mentioned will also be optimized - so even though 10.2 is crashing, it may help that the game overall continue to be optimized. One good thing is that the number of crashes in my crash report had dropped back to normal for IOS 10.3, but that MIGHT be just because less people use 10.3. Once there is a full rollout i will know more, but i am sure there will be a fix because its also making popular games like Hearthstone crash as well. Anyways thank you for your feedback, and letting me know your tech specs - that is very helpful to devs when we are trying to track things down
In the game when Rando first meets giska and they run in the field, in the project file its called "hide and seek" because originally it was going to be a hid and seek game - until a friend talked me out of it. But i think Hide and seek is a great thing to do - i like trying to find all the non violent but still engaging ways to do things in a virtual world. I think violence in games can be fun for sure, but i was thinking if i wanted thrills in the real world, i would never pick up a gun and shoot someone. instead i would do any of a million things (survive an avalanche, swim in the depths of the ocean, shop in a fancy store, find a lover, sit and watch the sunset) - so i think the time for more things like that is here I just upgrade my Unity license - so i have access so something that says up to 50 multiplayer users or something - so i will be checking that out in the future and see if its something i can implement. It would be cool to play hide and go seek with a friend
By the way, it wont stop the game from crashing, but you can goto Options > Chapters and skip a particular chapter (or any chapter)
Android Update Im posting this here for posterity I inadvertently uploaded the game to the Google play store and 4 people bought it. (i find the google developer tools very confusing). After speaking with google if i want to have a beta test (which i do) ill have to create a new app and use that for testing. What i dont get is that apparently you cant have a free beta test - people have to pay for it! You CAN make the game and thus the beta free, but you can never make it paid again. this is much different from apple where you can have a free beta, and you can change the price to anything anytime. So i have to decide if i want to launch the android version without a beta test or make the new app, which wont take long, but there's small issues like ill have to use a package name other than NimianBrightRidgeHD. i THINK im going to go the long route because it will be better to test the game first. And for the 4 people who bought it i can maybe refund them. Thinking what to do Meanwhile i am doing client work, and also the AppleTV version, MiFi controller support, optimization, and preparing/testing an upgrade to the game engine itself.
I keep telling you: take some time out from NLBR, and make your engine marketable As with the four folks on Android: Just explain - your post is good, you can pretty much paste it in, and ask them what they want for themselves? And if any of them knows which of the options you have flies better with the Android crowd. I'd also ask the same question here in the Dev subforum. And a place like Gamasutra would be great too. But I have no idea if they have some kind of open forum. Stackexchange might be worth a shot as well, for them I have no idea how large the group of Google Store and Game Development contributors is - e.g. if less, about equal, or more than who you find on TA.
NBLR's the dream man even if its never maibstream, its already brought me a lot of wonderful fan interaction, and to be honest that satisfies the artist in me. I'm going to go with the Open Beta, make it 99cents (thats the lowest) and set it for 1000 people. I spoke to google and when its a beta people get this big warning aboyt it potentially being buggy etc. And yeah for the four people who bought it, i dont know who they are (one is in italy but thats a big place if they ever contact me about it, ill personally refund them or ask them if they'd like something else. Better to have 4 people upset than 4000 (zero is best) I actually juts had s super illuminating talk with a tv producer who cantacted me aboyt a potential segment on NLBR. But I didnt know there would be production costs and they are low for a business, but out of reach for a guy like me who makes $25k a year They were really nice, and i learned a few things. But you know, something else came out of the talk. i love people, and i like happy people, and i believe in equality, and i believe in selling my work for very fair prices so that people are not excluded. I mean, having an iphone excludes a lot of the population, but i have to put the game somewhere, and im doing this because im driven to. And there's this additional layer of money. Like this feeling that so many people think we all make so much money, and i was looking at a launch party for a AA game and they spent like at least my whole budget for the last 5 years on it. And its great, but its this surprise when people find out its just you, but at first they are so skeptical because they are coming from this world inundated with money. When BrightRidge HD went free (112,000 downloads i got all these "what's the catch? whats the time limit? which areas are locked off? how intrusive are the in app purchase?". And im like baffled and im like "no catch. its free for a week. please download and enjoy". And it occurs to me today that people have really been immersed in this world that really puts profits first. And im not saying i don't want to make some money. But i want to make it so i can make a better game. The profit is not my motivation and it never will be. And that's why im relatively poor, but after the call and the feedback and all this, and i don't want to sound prideful, but im really happy that i love BrightRidge and game making and being 100% honest and that i have no other agenda than to make the most wonderful nature experience i can while staying healthy. And sometimes the money is the yardstick by which we measure success. And yes when my power has been cut off or i am hungry or stressed about bills, money would save the day. Its essential. But its not the only measure of success. I have shared a personal accomplishment with many players and they've spent time in the world, talked to me, kids have played it with parents, people have calmed their anxiety walking in it, and that's why i do this. And that's why today i feel like a success
I've been working out my development pipeline: BrightRidge 7.0 + Android version + Apple TV version + Mifi Controller Support + Optimizations Im also currently world building the new location Vandgels, and have almost finished writing the story Here's some early shots. Right now Rando is still the testing character, but the main character will be Nepto Suvika - she's someone that I have had in mind for 15 years, and I'm excited to tell her story. Vadngels is a much more vertical world, with lots of snow and the Tiviscan mountains.
Hi everyone Just a note to say BrightRidge HD is going back up in price. Thank you to everyone who tried the game - it was more than 115,000 of you in one week. I have received so much helpful feedback, and even a fan video or two
Screenshots are gorgeous as usual, especially the middle one gets my big stamp of approval. I just learned from Wavelight (Demon's Rise dev) that he now uses a tool called uRecord from the Unity Asset Store to record videos directly from inside Unity. Might be something for you too, if you don't have it already.

UPDATE: and a piece on procedural audio: http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/JoeStrout/20170223/292317/Procedural_Audio_in_Unity.php
Any chance a VR mode could be added? Look to move ? I am always looking for VR games for my iPod 6 this I think would be gorgeous in vr o.o
Thanks Nullzone. The are great links - very helpful. D&D with porn stars Nice name. The falls remind me a lot of uncharted. Maybe they were inspired by them, its easy to see how anyone could be
Yeah, Imagine? If I could get the controls right that would be so much fun. Technically anything is possible, if i can get the resources. For now i can only give it time after work so VR would be more than i can handle - but i have thought about it. I think it would be amazing to have a natural open world wilderness to explore in VR
Oops, posted twice by accident. Update: random crazy awesome content: http://dndwithpornstars.blogspot.nl/2010/05/crawling-opera.html?zx=2d81c3eb80ec7aa8
Second screenshot from top is the best of the bunch, epic. And the "Roehrender Hirsch" (bellowing stag) made me laugh, it's such a German kitsch cliche. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Röhrender_Hirsch, make another in that style?
