Great review, and very well deserved! Which reminds me to write my own when I have time this week (I NEVER do Appstore reviews, so you get the special "favourite dev" treatment ) . Oh, and: we are in the Appstore description, folks! Robert was so kind to mention a few of us by name. And not only in the credits, but directly in the game description *itself*. Now, where did I leave my portable ego-deflater...
me? no, i feel like im doing nothing compared to what you did here, all the great updates. and to be honest, the quest giving me a goosebumps while playing it. just play through the second quest for 30 minutes and i fall for it. im going to finished all the quest and enjoyed the beatiful landscape and scenery. "i never, yes i never see something that beautiful on my iphone screen since the first iphone" the camera angle is perfect(while riding), the idea of the quest is just fun to follow and let us the player to enjoyed the story without having to much headache about anything else. i wish i could write more review about this but my english is not too good, so i just tried to describe everything that i can as much as possible nimian legends - the quest, is totally a new experience from this game and probably should be release as a new app, but protopop really keep his words when he release the HD version. im sending this app now to my friends since i get the HD version for free from proto and i feel like cheating and stingy bastard for not paying a dime on this amazing and beautiful game like this
You've been helpful since almost day one And quite simply the beta testing helped me find some major game breaking bugs - i dont think i could have done it without your help and the other testers. Its not just the mental encouragement but also the practical help finding bugs and smoothing gameplay
Congratulations on 2500 posts! wow! I didn't know english wasnt your first language. What is it? Mine is english but im from Quebec so i speak french too. I'm also half Zambian but i dont speak Bemba which is the language from my tribe. I watched the gameplay video - thank you for sharing that Your help is worth way more than the price of the app - giving you a copy is the least i can do! If anyone wants to watch the video you can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6oJ-Ms7rlc
Thank you IAP-king - I hope you enjoy it. there are a lot of customizations so if you have any problem with performance you can change the resolution, grass density etc in the options>playground
Man this game is incredibly gorgeous.... I am loving story mode too! Oh also how do we get the shape changing stuff? Do we get it by playing story mode or?
Im so glad you like it. Thanks for letting me know, and if you have a chance a rating on the app store will help because i have no marketing budget, so its really word of mouth that helps me out. In storymode you gain all but 2 shapechanging abilities as you play. In adventure mode you can find the shapechanges by climbing the spiral towers that dot the land. Right now getting a power in either mode carries over to the other, so if you want to play story mode in oure form best to play it first before exploring. Im probably going to separate their save files in the next (and last) update (itll all be about polish) You can also use options > settings > cheats to unlock all the shapechanging abilities at any time. Youre also free to skip to any chapter of even the end using options> chapters. BrightRidge is all about freedom and thats why i try not to permanently lock anything behind closed doors if you want them asap. Most of the quality controls are in options> playground. Changing to a low resolution is the biggest speed factor. There is also a watercolor mode in their that you can turn on to make the game look kind of like a painting
Wow I just played this for a few hours and loved every minite of it! I have to admit I bought this on launch day but only played for a few minutes as I was kind of lost on what to do. But now with story mode added it has been an awesome experience so far. I just unlocked the dragon form # By the way I did leave a new review on the app store.
Thank you sooooo much for the review! that helps more than you can imagine. yeah, the story mode was by far the number one requested feature. I noticed too that having a story kind of brings the world into sharper focus. Its like the area you explore in the story is a lot smaller than the whole of the world, but it feels like it makes each place richer
Yea it was a pretty cool touch to start as kids helping around the inn doing stuff like turning on the valves so the residents could have hot water. Then slowly getting and playing with cool shapeshift forms all while having one of the best looking games I have ever seen on IOS is pretty impressive.
Whoa! That is quite flattering having our name mentioned at all in association with this piece of gaming art! Thanks, Robert. As I was going through the story, I noticed a few misspellings and grammatical things. If you've got a text file of all the dialogue and stuff, feel free to send it my way. I've worked alongside a copy editor for a while and would love to help with any of that and send it back. But if not, don't worry. It hasn't hindered my enjoyment in the least. Now how can we get this more attention? I'll send it to a couple people I know for sure. But I'd love to see it on TA's front page again!
That's a great offer about the text! and man i WISH i did have the text in a text file. One of the things on my todo list was to externalize the text so that i could potentially have it translated and localize a french version, spanish etc. But i took a quick look a few weeks ago and i coudlnt figure out how to bring in text that way. I wrote the quest engine from scratch. Each QUEST is its own object that i can attach things too. One of the things i can attach to it is what i call a NARRATION module. and in that i can select characters and tell them what to say. Its pretty overwhelming because my todo list for update 4 is literally 1500 items long, and there's no way i'll be able to do all those (unless by a miracle i sell like a 100,000 copies which is unlikely - im realistic so ill pick and choose, but that external text thing would be really cool beacuse of the localization. im glad you mentioned it because it makes me move the external text a bit up in priority In the meantime ill keep my eye out for the grammar errors. Because i do everything in the game, i have kind of developed this habit of "get the AI done","get the narration done", "get the combat done"...etc all at 80% - good enough to pass. Sometimes when i get a moment im able to go back and give a full day or two to one section, like when i took 2 days to remake the Splash screen, and honestly its like my favorite part, its closes to being what i had envisioned for that section. So maybe i will find time to revisit this text. I'm rambling - i just had a tim hortons raspberry lemonade and i think its FULL of sugar
Someone asked how to find the underwater temple. its not in the main story so i threw together a quick recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdqECk0nF4M&feature=youtu.be
Wow. Just finished the story finally as I lay here in the early morning hours. And I feel like I'm on a high. It was quite gripping to me for some reason. The backstory was like a surreal dream and I loved every second. And the build up at the end was quite a rush. That was really a cool experience. Didn't think I'd feel so attached and involved in that amount of time. Kudos, Rob! Now, it's time to get my exploration on!
just finished the quest, that was quite amazing experience and really engaging. one thing though, im quite disappointed to know that the underwater temple doesn't be a part of the quest. well, maybe you can add more quest which tell another story of brigthridge and include more underwater quest into it. totally worth my time and of course the price
Awesome - and thanks for the tweet! You found the watercolor effect - its cool to see a screenshot using it. Im just glad people are finishing the storyline - i wsnt sure if it would be too, not hard but just un navigable... im nit a great writer so i kept the story very simple and i think that helped cover some of its flaws. I also spent more time at the start with a quiet story, so that by the time the action build s up there is kind of this base layer that hopefully grounds it a bit, and that youre bit invested in the characters. Im away for 2 days now but am going to outline things for a mini update and also look at the android version, people are REALLY asking for it So far the game isnt setting the world on fire, but i think if enough people like the story mode and leave enough good reviews or ratings that will help immensely. PS im following you on twitter
Thats funny because someone else asked me the same thing and thats why i made this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdqECk0nF4M&feature=youtu.be I think the underwater can work really well because with all the effects there's really kind of that feeling that you are going into a whole new world. If i can sell enough copies to keep working on game development, then you will all get to visit Residi Bay. And that adventure has a very big underwater component that if you like the underwater temple you will love it Your gameplay videos really help ecpose BrightRidge and you are a big part of its move forward and i appreciate that so much. For whatever reason you have a big love for games and for sharing how they work and all the hard work and time you put into your videos is pretty amazing. I was talking with Nullzone about improving some of the subsytems and teh quest syetm is something i want to optimize. It pretty easy for me to add in new quests but not side quests, so id like to decouple the quest system in a way that will let me add in some new quests that could take us to other areas of BrightRidge while expansing the lore. Basically in my next update its all about getting the underlying code ready and polished so i can use the BrightRidge engine to make the other 3 environments. So a lot of teh code works for a single game, but i am refactoring it to also work for new environments without having to heavily rework any of the underlying coding. Anyways if i finish reworking the three main systems (UI, Quests and terrain - terrain is already done) then i will probably add in a new quest or two they'd be free of course - anything that adds to the main game will improve its reception overall and i like to add value wherever i can.
cool, but please im not asking for a treat here . i know that for the next update you'll be more improving then now in term of technical development and ill be happy to pay for more quest as in app purchase. fishing can also be a great addition into the game, please consider about this too. last, can you disable the music and replace it with just ambience soundfx. sometimes i just want to standing on the big rock and listen to the sound of the wind . imo ambience sound will work better than music but then, thats up to you.
Fishing is 100% on my list - it just makes sense in BrightRidge Great minds think alike. Yeah, actually i think all the audio could use a once over to mix the sounds better. there's a few jarring sfx But in the meantime you can turn off the music only in Options > settings > Audio > Music Volume I think it was actually someone on Touch Arcade who helpfully suggested i add volume controls - i wish i could remember who right now - but its there thanks to them
