Almost ready In addition to the Story Mode, update 3 has more than a hundred bug fixes and improvements - new filters, new shapechanging, new areas and revamped old ones. The swimming has also been improved. Ive fixed the jitter that happened when you swam on the surface, added new underwater effects and ambient sound and jump splashes and sea bubbles. The sunken temple Merilisse. Legends say it was scooped one-handed by a Behemoos long ago and tossed into the sea. Action shot with motion blur enabled (it's off by default) I managed to get some fish in the shot
Indeed The second one has a really evil vibe. Both that and the last one make her look a lot like a mermaid; I think because the feet are hidden in the second shot, and I didn't see them right away in the 4th. Hhmm ... @Robert: if you have an empty slot left, a merfolk shapechange would be nice for swimming around.
Thank you Yeah i like it too, and i'll let you in on a little secret. I like to think some people are like "wow he knows what he's doing" but the funny story with the temple - I had never really liked the large seaside temple-thing, Thedrale, that was by the sea near the eagle tower, so i rebuilt it - all vines and Celtic brick and sunlight and i love it. Then the other night i was down to 20 items (almost ready) and i had some time but didnt want to work onthem, and i was like "what if i copied the temple to the underwater" because the underwater is very empty (it wont be in the Sequel Residi Bay though if i ever get to do it). Anyways i put a copy underwater, and i had already fixed the swimminga nd added a lot of ambience and fish, and it all just looked so amazing, swimming through seaweed in this underground temple. When you visit it the ViewDot say "Legend has it a Behemoos scooped it up and threw it in the sea" and thats actually what happened I just scooped it up and threw it in the sea, so there's kind of this weird meta-story there where my actions become part of the game history, and since im the one building it its kind of a cool thought
Merfolk! I will save them for Residi Bay (the seaside city sequel) - that would be so much fun. I heard the actually tear sailors apart and are like Harpies. Hmmm, who knows what they will be like in the Nimian Universe No work today - i washed my iphone and it died. After the fact though, cuz i phone from my neighbours and the washing machine started ringing and i was like "Oh S**t!" But apple replaced it so i lost teh day but all ended well. And now i have an excuse to test it on the latest IOS that came with the new phone.
More mythology for me to dig through If I remember right, they are like how you describe them in several myths, but cannot remember where right away. For inspiration on the not-so-nice part, google "scary mermaid" and switch to images. 4th row from top had the one I vaguely remembered. Enjoy Or just go watch Dagon. That image is from the movie, I just recall. And washed your iPhone? Ouch... talk about stupid accidents. But still somewhat funny Good to hear you got a replacement quickly.
Code: Ive finished my last playthrough and noted all the remaining issues - 24 left and i am confident for a submission this week So i was biking through the (real world) marsh the other day and having some fun with fishes reacting to light and shadow, And the experience made me revisit something that ive wanted in BrightRidge from day 1: Living Painting mode which gives brightRidge the look of an explorable painting. Its something that i wanted for a long time and im happy i was finally able to add it in.
Yes! That's looks like an absolute breath of fresh air for any game. I love the thought of being able to play within a painting.
Painting mode does look good as usual, curious to see it live. Of course, immediately reminded me of this: http://www.scp-wiki.net/scp-085 Something similar could make a very interesting story.
Interesting - Your well of knowledge is so deep one could drown in it Where do you find room for all these references in your head? I love it when stuff is written like this, as if it's real (perhaps it is on some plane of existence The black and white effect reminds me of the new Prisma app that has these really cool art photo filters. Yeah the paint effect looks cooler in motion , the same with a lot of screenshots. Sometimes i show someone them and they're like "meh" but when they see the game in action they are usually impressed a bit with the look. I left out the double texture resolution option in this update because it was causing some problems, but i would love to see if i can add it in after this update is live, when there is less to focus on.
Merci One of my favorite games was Jet Set Radio which had a cool cell shaded look, and ive liked Okami which looked hand drawn and the wind waker zelda with its cell shading. BrightRidge for me has always had this kind of "fabble", storybook feel to it and i think the moving painting is a fun way to explore the world in a way that strays true to its spirit. You can turn it on and off (its off by default) and change the strength and brush size of the effect in the options.
Me too If i get a chance id like to add another quest that involves a painting in brightridge to explicitly show the effect (its off by default) - maybe something like in the elder scrolls oblivion where you leap into a painting for a quest Ive also added a subtle blur effect to the options so that the buttons stand out more. And ive rebuilt teh water - before there was a choice of 2 water types and the heavier one was REALLY heavy on the cpu because there is a bug in unity where the occlusion culling (hiding unseen objects) doesnt work for reflections, so in the last few versions BrightRidge has actually been reflecting EVERYTHING in the scene all the time! And the basic water i thought was very performant but not so nice to look at. Now there are 10 water types to choose from, and even the basic version looks a lot better and the full version looks great and they all perform much better. 10 years ago special effects in visuals in games was pretty rare (okami and wind waker being a few exceptions) but today so many of them have a beautiful and unique look - Inside, Limbo, Firewatch, Abzu, Rime.... Its kind of like the progress of real paintings over time, where cubism, romanticism, expressionism etc all came and went as styles evolved - i think something similar is happening with the art of games, with photorealism being a great goal (that i love too) but no longer the only one for a variety of reasons. My own style i think is close to expressionism, my work is fast and messy but i focus on the feeling, the light, the dust and the dirt to compensate. I hope that BrightRidge gives a "feeling" of being someplace real This shows the new water. PS if you find this place, take a leap into that water and you might find a fish swarm to swim with
I have one mire bug to fix, but BrightRidge update is otherwise ready. Ive tested uploading and validating for the App Store so im almost ready to go. unfortunately it turns out the Oil Paint filter will only work on iPads, but i've contacted the asset developer and maybe we can fix that. heres a shot of what will probably be the new launch image
I know, eh? And good news - ive fixed it so Oil Paint works on all devices now I am so close, and im really looking forward to this. Ive been working on this game in some form for more than 5 years. You know, it used to be called Nimian Hunter : Mentipede, then Nimian Hunter : Salvation because it sounded more market-speak then Nimian Battles, Then Nimian Battles TombRidge when it focused on fighting, then Nimian Legends :TombRidge and finally when TombRidge didnt fit it (it's a bright ridge after all) Nimian Legends : BrightRidge! What a journey.
Just want to throw out here really quick that I have the pleasure to playtest the storymode. And it's great so far, really enjoyed what I saw and how the story goes. Of course, I had quite a few nitpicks - as usual - to annoy poor Robert with
proto, thats just one simple splash screen, feels so calm. i really hope that the next iphone can get the full potential of NL.
Bring them on Nullzone Large companies pay people to get feedback - im extremely blessed that people like you are helping for free. The feedback ive received from you and the Touch Arcade forums have been so valuable. Each bit of feedback sheds light on how the game can be improved and you know i listen to all of it Thanks again for your help - if there;s no game breaking bugs i will submit it to Apple today, then i will focus on my final update which will be all about polish and improvement.
