Offtopic, but now I'm glad I didn't buy an Air2 or Pro yet Fingers crossed for a Pro2 with even more power under the hood. And of course I didn't get around to post the wood stuff, work keeps me busy
Thank you - i'd love any contacts i can get to help promote BrightRidge. I would REALLY love it if i can sell enough to convince me to continue game design. It's my passion, but working on the games as a hobby and then working a day job has me exhausted But im treating this as a soft launch. When i add in the stories - i have a May deadline for that - i will push to market the game more as it will be more feature complete - some people love just exploring, looking at the view etc but i think a lot of people want the stories - its probably the biggest request ive gotten in the last year about the game. I hope your little one does like the dragon In the next update i'd like to add fire breathing to it, which unfortunately didnt make this cut. But she is the fastest flyer of all the animals so you can get around BrightRidge fast using that shape change.
I love filmakers - they ave a very hard job that requires a LOT of brainpower and risk taking, I took some cinema in university. Unity actually has some new Depth of field options. The one im using is nice but id like to replace it with one of the newer ones which includes bokeh apparently and has some better performance. A big difference in this upgrade is ive given players a lot more access to the settings so you can fine tune a lot of stuff, but the DOF is just on/off. Id like to expose more in the next update so you can take photos in game and play with the DOF focus and quality.
You have great insight ive been thinking a lot about the new ipad. basically this runs on any 64 bit device but it runs with full/far grass and high/far shadows on iPad air 2. and ll of them run at 1/4 the textures of my original project file. Thats what you see in the screenshots 1/4 res. the new ipad and pro has made me think about future proofing this, so the options to set the game on higher quality is open to all devices, but they are really there also for future ones because the air 2 runs so many of the effects that i am guessing the pro, iphone 6s and new ipad will be able to handle even more. One update i tested successfully but left out of this release is the option to increase the textures to half res (which looks even better than it sounds). I just wasnt sure if including the high res would affect the memory footprint on the devices that could not handle it. But i think its ok and it'll be in the story version update. And if things keep increasing i am sure next years will handle full res textures. since half res works on 2 gb devices and the new ones have 4 i think they will be able to play the game close to parity with what my actual Macbook can handle. Computing power for mobile is definitely crossing over to xbox 360 territory and beyond. Thanks for the note about perfection. yeah, i had to drop some features and there are some rough edges. But i figure after how long it took to make this update i can release it and update as i go along, otherwise i think i would collapse since it is so hard to make all of this as one person The story involves one main story with no side quests, but i think it is an interesting one that tells the story of the young girl Giska, and the young boy Rando meeting at BrightRidge inn, and how they grow up together in BrightRidge and learn to help make the inn a success, and then moves onto the larger issue of saving BrightRidge from loggers and more coming up from the south. And of course it all comes down to discoverig the secrets of the new tower in the center of the land. There are actually some hidden places you cant get to right now but they are included in the game in anticipation for the story, at which point i will "open them up". Ai will get an update too. I like what i have but it is all about refinement
Yeah, given how powerful the air 2 is i can only imagine what the next devices will be capable of. I havent even tried in on a 6s yet and it works great on iphone 6, so basically as new more powerful devices come along you can just bump up the quality options for future machines. The game also dynamically sets the best quality for your particular device, so the ipad mini 2,3, iphone 5s get a slighly lower quality (they have a7 chips and 1gb ram) while the a8 and a9 devices get a big bump, with the air 2 leading the pack.
Have you ever heard of Zarista Games? They're the company that helped write the majority of the intricate quests and story of Redshift's "The Quest" series. Their stories are second to none, but their recent attempts at creating an actual RPG left a lot to be desired. I think between your awesome game design and their incredible story writing you'd have the recipe for an EPIC RPG!
Wow macatron - those are crazy! I'm impressed they could deliver so much content. Stories have never been my strongsuit so i have a real appreciation for people who can do that. I did sing up for tutorials on writing game stories by Edwin McRae - so far they have helped a lot Something I can relate to is Zarista's expansions. If I can sell enough copies of the new BrightRidge I have a plan to use the world templates to deliver 3 new areas to explore. I always loved the idea of dungeons and dragons modules and expansion kits that enlarge existing worlds.
I found a couple of small bugs so i just uploaded a second build to the Apple store. It will reset the queue but i should still hear back from them over the next week or 2. I will update here I am also putting the polish on the quests and storyline - i am aiming to submit that update ate the end of April.
Zarista does pretty good story-telling indeed. But TheQuest needs a serious graphics update. @macatron: If with recent attempts at creating an actual RPG you refer to Wizzard's Island: Yup, that'd need a lot of improvement in the UI department. And the graphics weren't that impressive, especially compared to a marvel like Brightridge. Omber I didn't even touch, as it seemed to have the same terrible UI as Island. Now, a Zarista game with Robert's world design and graphics would be something else
Excited to hear it's coming along. And super excited to see it highlighted on the main page! Hope a few people will be interested in supporting this earlier version in anticipation of the new one!
Thanks for alerting me to the home page write up curtisrshideler. I had no idea! Im am super happy There was a lot of debate in the comments about it being a new game vs an update. Iwrote a long-ish comment answering some of it, and i also made BrightRidge original free just now. Anyways ill collect my thoughts and write a bit more about it on this thread because it is kind of an interesting topic.
Thank you Repulsa. As curtisrshideler mentioned it's on the way - it's currently in Apple's review Queue. Up next are 2 updates: 1.1 As I was about to submit it, i came across some new tech that improves the terrain texturing and shaping even more. I am putting it into a 1.1 update asap 1.2 This will be the long awaited Quests. Here's a few new screenshots of the 1.1 update (wow there are a lot of numbers for me to keep track of here - so exciting to be able to share all of this) The 1.1 update basically uses even more procedural placement. I was never 100% crazy about the terrain textures in the HD update, and the new tech solves that problem, but it was too big of an update to put into the 1.0 HD version The original and HD use a mix of procedural and hand crafted design (I call it PROCEDURALLY ASSISTED design), what the 1.1 update will add it more flexibility for me as a designer to make changes to the landscape, and to make future games in new locations, which is something i have been preparing for as a made this game After i submitted the HD 1.0 i update my Unity software and there are a few large-ish fixes i am going through. The latest version of Unity is by default a lot brighter so i am also fixing the lighting in some textures, but overall the update has even nicer lighting. Ill get all this together in the second update. So to sum up, the 1.1 update will be the same as the 1.0, but with more detailed terrain, better lighting and more realistic terrain texturing. It also changes the placement of the trees and vegetation (the inn and hero objects wont move) so its kind of neat because 1.1 is essentially the same world but just... different. I want to make a BIG shoutout also to TouchArcade. they are literally the definition of Indie support. Im one guy (and an asset store) with a spare change budget, and they have really helped encourage me to pursue something I love. BrightRidge isn't and can't be everything I want it to be, but it's something and it has a special place in my heart and in the history of my life.
I am getting the "item is currently being modified" and I can't download, anyone else having this problem?
First, thanks for making this version free, even though I find it a little choppy on my iPad Mini 2... I think the next incarnation should be in "Up and Coming"... Metal is always welcomed BTW, questions: 1. How much will the new one? 2. Plan to include MFi controller support?
Nice that you got some frontpage exposure, Proto! But those commenters, geez... f*cking spoiled ill-mannered uncouth entitled brats. Their parents should give them a good spanking until they see the error of their ways. Instead of going all apologetic, I'd have shown them the finger in no uncertain - and certainly not nicely worded - terms. STFU & GTFO, basically. Ah well, had to get that out of my system. Nothing to see here, please move on I really hope you put a reasonable pricetag on the HD version. 10 Euros at least, and the same for a DLC pack with the quests. Just don't sell yourself short again with a 1 pricetag, please. And screw free updates, people constantly demanding those are insane. I wonder if it's possible to add a subscription model, to provide new content/updates that way. Might help with keeping the money coming in. Didn't hear back from StormbringerGT yet about potential Apple contacts, you might want to consider contacting him yourself.
Holy sh.. Got a question, dev. Can the game run on my iPad Air with all those super good looking finger lickingly beautiful graphical effects without lag? Also man, wanted to say that I bought the game before it went free.
