Amenbrother! I'm thinking the same thing. Just make BrightRidge HD for Metal. Accept the new URL. MAke the original free with a redirect in the description. Thank you for the response. Being a solo developer can put you in a real bubble. It's important to come up for air and hear what otherpeople think. Much appreciated
You know my opinion already Go Metal, screw everything else. Turn the current Nimian Legends up to Metal. Call it "NL: HD" , "NL: now with more blingbling than ever" or whatever suits your fancy. Don't spend more time on trying to optimise for outdated devices. Rename it to "NL: Abacus Edition" or something equally sideways funny. About the 1-star reviews: Ignore those, don't let em get to you. Easier said than done, I know. Play the drinking game when you check your reviews, or write a filter that only let's you see the 5-star ones
Abacus Edition you made me laugh out loud. I'm only a half hour into responses, but i am already feeling much more clear about taking option 2. Exactly what you said. BrightRidge HD and BrightRidge Free. Thanks Nullzone
Yeah, I'd say option 2 as well. But I wouldn't make it free. If you can still make money for those of us not on iOS 8, then that would be great, you know. I'll happily buy the new one once I update to iOS 8 too!
Thanks for the feedback Velentia. BTW I've been working to bring the option to choose your gender into the game. option 2 is going to make that easier because the mecanim system im working with (that lets me map animations across different models) apparently takes a little more CPU, so ficusing on 64bit devices will make that development easier. Surprisingly (a bit) its been tricky to find female models that are not all boobs and flesh I bought Mixamo Fuse and am seeing if I can develop a female hero that is capable and not overtly sexual. I dont think there's anything wrong with overt sexuality, but in the same way the current hero suggests war and battle with his bulk and armor (im changing him too) I think brightridge is a LITTLE less cartoonish in my mind. Anyways we will see
Thank you curtisrshideler. It's encouraging to hear people are OK with option 2. I'd like to make the original one free partly as a lead in for the Metal version - if you like it then you can upgrade to the new version with better graohics and more content. But I didn't really even consider making it not free and after you brough it up i admit it's something to think about. I think im pretty set on offering the old versiont free at least most of the time, and maybe charge in limited periods of time. I learned a lot from what i made so far and i'd also like the world to be accessible to as many people as possible (thats part of the reason the upset people on A5 devices with the crashing was so difficult, i WANTED to make it work for all of them but its just beyond me unfortunately.
That is awesome, Protopop! Thank you for considering it. It really is such an enchanting landscape to explore.
I hear you I mean, geez, look at this: http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=256954 Nothing wrong with skin and stuff (I totally adore Luis Royo, for example) . But as I wrote over there, would be nice to see something more reasonable now and then. Unfortunately, boob plate and chainmail bikini are still all the rage. As a longtime Fantasy reader, I always wonder where the male barbarians in fur thong, 70ies style, went off to. Male fashion seems to change a bit faster in fantasyland If you need inspiration, I highly recommend this: http://womenfighters.tumblr.com/ Lots of great pictures of females in battle-appropriate armor.
The blog with appropriately dressed women is great! added it to my favorites It's funny because 3dFoin makes amazing models (i have a lot) but yeah there is this penchant for skin, skin, skin. It's kind of like the equivalent of explosions in action films. Im guilty of it too. With BrightRidge (actually back when it was called Nimian Hunter) i went with a standard barabarian character because that's what men are. I actually altered his texture to add more clothing on him. On the flipside i made a game called Nimian Garden and the main character was a loin clothed barabarian (actually his name is Rando and its a longtime character and teh reason i use barabarians in the game) but it blew the minds of some people who were really freaked out that a barbarian like that would plant flowers. I can see both sides - i think a barabarian can plant flowers and we shouldn't stereotype, i can also see that characters are part of the story and what they communicate through their stance and look and behavior communicates part of the art direction. For better or worse having a rough barabarian in BrightRdge leads many people to expect a battle harderned world full of violence a la god of war. Thats part of the reason i need to tone him down so i dont communicate those kind of expectations. I'm hoping i can create a good, reasonable male and female character in FUSE by Mixamo. Like i said I like skin too, and there's a lot of room for sex and splashiness, but it would be nice if there were more options too. It's more like there is too much of one thing. Looking at those screenshots i was admiring their depth of field (im working on adding it to BrightRidge and trying to find a balance that doesnt look too 'smeary'). I also recognized the terrain and grass as Unity - I guess there is s 'Unity look' just like there is an 'Unreal' look
I was just watching some of your gameplay videos and thinking how amazingly large your output is I don't know how you find the time but everyone loves them. Yes i does count towards my decision. It backups up my mind to go with option 2m and i already feel less stressed knowing i can focus on a set of devices and give the best possible experience on them without limiting things. I'm happy i was able to at least try and make things A5 compatible, but since the technical requirements of that took so much of my energy and time i wasn't able to focus on the future as much. In any case it looks like i will definitely make the current version on the store free when i do this and release a new BrightRidge HD. One of the interesting side effects of committing to more powerful devices is that i have had to practice restraint. I was experimenting with all kinds of new landscape items etc and i realized just keep it minimal - dont throw in everything i have just because i can - BrightRidge follows its own set of internal natural logic and i have to respect that, so the update is more about refinement and quality options. For example i have these really great buildings with interiors id love to add, but it didn't make sense in the end because brightridge is not a heavily populated area. You have to stay true tpo the spirit of the area if you're going to flesh it put into a believable reality. Thanks for the feedback
I really like the idea with the flowerplanting barbarian "Waddya say? We need go slay a dragon, crawl some dungeons and such? Sure, but let me finish my bouquet first. And my roses need watering soon, so I'll have to be back before dinner." Did you ever watch the original Conan? There is a scene where he walks around with a bunch of flowers, trying to look all harmless and innocent. Quite hilarious in my opinion
Animal Companions The next update focuses on bringing BrightRidge into Unity 5 and Metal, but the one after add animal companions. you can tame them and amass a small army of loyal pets who will keep you company and follow you wherever you go
I saw it when i was kid but unfortunately dont remember much about it. I think it's cult classic though - sounds like it from the description This is a pic of the original Rando. he's been in 3 of my games including BrightRidge. In Nimian Garden he was fleeing the war, questioning his participation in it, and just decided to visit the woods and start a garden The game was a bit contoversial back then because he could explore the forest and date the woodhopper or the water nymph. I was inspired by Fable which let's you have a relationship with whomever you chose.
Gender Equality comes to BrightRidge I spent a few days upgrading the animation system to Mecanim, something i've been meaning to do for over a year, and the results were great. Now thanks to retargeting I have been able to add in a female playable character: Giska. It also open up a lot more opportunities for animation both in fluidity of movement and variety. Im fighting a cold so need to take a break, but when i come back i will be making the last push to release Version 1.3 for Mac, PC and IOS, with new locations, roads, female character, effects and options. Although I love the character model i do want to cover her up a bit using some texture design work for the final build. There's nothing wrong with shape and skin, but im hoping to have the character focus on her hardiness and skill as well. Game design isn't without its glitches The Baedils are curious creatures roaming most of the known countryside. In the future i'd like to expand their AI even further. They make a kind of interesting creature to interact with in the game and further my goal to create a real living open world wilderness.
BrightRidge 1.3 video Please ignore the choppiness - it's the screen recording. A quick video that shows some of the upcoming features in Nimian Legends BrightRidge 1.3 for 64bit IOS, Mac and PC, including depth of field, upgraded water effects, improved atmospheric scattering and realtime shadows, as well as a new female playable character: Giska and new areas to explore. The Mac and PC versions use the mouse scroll wheel to change you camera zoom, it's a really cool way to interactively explore your environment quickly. There's also a new over the shoulder camera angle that's more like The Witcher 3 (can't wait!) or Skyrim (almost the best game ever) so you can really see the environment close up. original link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-ng6gLFK7A
