Update 1.2.1 New Features I'm submitting update 1.2.1 to the app store tomorrow, hopefully it will be approved soon. I'm doing smaller but more frequent updates now as i am close to finishing the mechanics before i do the big "Quests" update. Here's a rundown of the new features Photo Mode enter photo mode to freely move the camera and take screenshots that are saved to your iPhone or iPad's camera roll. The screenshots on the page were taken on my iphone using this feature. I think it might make promoting the game a bit easier too if people can compose their own shots and share them First Person View You can now explore BrihtRidge in first person mode. It looks pretty cool If you attack while in First Person mode your bow becomes your default weapon. Optimizations I reduced the source file size by half and fixed the 300 or so Unity warnings by removing all the obselete code. These warnings in Unity 4 became errors in unity 5 so its all part of a massive code and asset clean up that should make the game much faster over the next few updates River Splashes Now your players feet splash when walking in a river as well as walking in lakes Splash Screen GUI The splash screen options have been updated to match the rest of the game's option screens Bug Fixes A lot of them I'll post an update here as soon as/if apple approves the update. I am already working on update 1.2.2 that brings a cool new feature - portal grenades - more on that soon but it's a cool new way to travel around brightridge. In the meantime here's a few more screenshots taken with the new Photo Mode feature The lanterns are new and part of a recurring Nimian Theme i am introducing across the games.
Thanks Stooney Unfortunately this is where the Unity bug starts to come into play. I'm stuck using Unity 4.2 and there's a bug where autorotation won't work for IOS8 (it works for IOS 7 and below). The bug is fixed in the latest version of Unity BUT i can't upgrade past 4.2 because of a bug that basically makes Trees on IOS not work. I've been asking Unity to fix this bug for more than a year, and it's impacting my game development in cases like this. I may even have to stop developing the game after February because my version of Unity wont be able to export 64bit apps, which Apple is requiring in a few months. I also am not able to use Unity 5 which I plunked down $1200 for, so all around this is a big deal. Anyways that's probably too much information but i just wanted you to know that i listen to what people ask for and if there was a way to upgrade the auto rotation would be in there, but until i can upgrade unity I'm going to have to leave it out. Sorry about that.
Ouch, that sounds bad; really sorry to hear that, Protopop. So that tree bug is not fixed in Unity5 ? If I remember right, Unity listed it as "fixed in future release", but I cannot recall if that specifically meant 5.x . Still wondering if there aren't any alternatives that you can use, without having to redo the whole game.
Thanks for the info Robert! If this makes any difference, it does not need to be "auto" rotation per se. An option in settings to "flip screen" would do just as well. Unless "internally" this would make no difference ... I hope that Unity soon does whatever needs to be done for you to continue working. It would really be a shame and I would very much like to see where you are going with it. Cheers!
Oh wow, a developer who's willing to optimize for older devices! Thank you so much for continuing to support older devices in a time when other developers are willing to leave those users in the dust. I've become so cynical over developer support for A5 devices that this genuinely made my day better I'll be eagerly awaiting that update. Spoiler (I too really like the look of the 4S, even over the newer iPhones. The glass backing looks so much nicer than aluminum)
Thanks Nullzone Unity has been releasing updated betas every couple of weeks and Im making sure to test the game in each one. So far no fix but i'm optimistic. Ive submitted an example project containing the bug to Unity and ive heard they have a developer who realized they hadnt fixed the problem after all and is looking into it. The only solution i can think of if there isnt a fix is to replace the tree system but so far no luck with that as its an embedded part of Unity that works better than the custom solutions I've tried. Anyways I have until at least January to make updates so im doing as much as I can between now and then In Game screenshot taken on iPhone 5S using the new Photo Mode
That's a pretty good idea. unfortunately I can't test it because the older version of Unity I'm using doesn't export directly to IOS 8. I'm going to keep developing on this version as long as possible and hope they fix the bug before February. I've been really stressed about his so im going to let it go and see what Unity is able to do about it. It it does get fixed Ill be able to add in the autorotation and more so let's hope In Game screenshot taken on iPhone 5S using the new Photo Mode
Spoiler Yeah I prefered that back ton the new one i was like "what are these plastic lines?" I'm also adding IOS 6 support in the update after this one. There is still a lot of room for optimization in the project, and I'm glad to hear it makes a difference to people that I am working on improving support for A5 There are a lot of A5 devices out there so anything i can do i will. just want to stop by and say that it looks gorgeous than ever. im still stalking this thread and im patiently waiting for the quest update, perhaps unity 5 with metal support will make this game looks even more amazing! you get my full respect and support for giving attention and love to your game protopop. thank you.
Thanks Redribbon, and stalk all you like I like the company and it's thanks to you this thread was started. I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do with Metal support too! Bear Country - The Open Coast (I guess it does look a bit like Canada)
Looks like Canada? Now, where's the Royal Nimian Mounted Police? Redcoats riding Ents, anyone? All in favour, commence to hootin' 'n' hollerin' !
Oh geez ... never give a creative guy crazy ideas, he'll just make them happen If you really pull that off, you just earned a few more extra points on my awesome scale
The update is uploading as I type. Usually it takes about a week to get approved so here's hoping The first person view is cooler than i thought. I always preferred third person view but this is one of those features people where asking for. After i added it i realized it's pretty neat to be able to more directly look at things. It kind of enhances the exploration feel of the game because instead of the focus being on your player body and interaction with the world, the focus is all on the view and looking at it. Basically there are so many new mechanics being added that weren't there in version 1.0 (ipad, jumping, weather...) and it's giving me a really good set of options to choose form for when i add the quests. With the new photo mode i'd like to include a quest where you need to photograph/observe some of the wildlife - kind of like they did back in Beyond Good and Evil (a GREAT game) What im rrally excited is to add the Portal Bombs in the next updte - its kind of a secret what they do but i think people will really like it. More on that soon Mama Bear protects her cubs (taken on iPhone 5S with new Free Cam Photo Mode)
Super siked for the new update! I'm thinking first person will greatly enhance how real the world will feel.
That's cool Woodrith - excitement is infectious, it gets me pumped too The photo mode is also cool, its kind of like a first person view that you can move anywhere, and snap as many pictures as you want, so if you see a scene you like, you can capture it Anyways there was a bug with my upload today so i pulled it from the app store queue, made the fix, and it's uploading again right now. It should still be about a week before/if it's approved. I can already see a few updates i'd like to make to first person view too - i think now more with this view i should add a joystick sensitivity control, and maybe regroup these under a dedicated control option panel. the best part about updating the game is that once an improvement is added, it's there for good. And im getting to slowly watch the game grow and improve update by update. It's in review now so hopefully it will be available soon. I'm really enjoying the photo mode and am filling up my phone with wilderness photos
