I'm sorry to hear about the crashing. Please tell your friend to try closing all open apps, then restarting the device. Most people on the forums and who've emailed me have had that work.

It works without crashing on A6 and higher devices - iPad Air, iPad 4, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S, iPad mini Retina.

It isnt supported on A5 devices because they have 512mb of ram. But as i mentioned above people have gotten it to work on them with the close and restart (iPhone 4s, iPad mini, iPod touch 5,iPad 3, iPad 2). But it will play at a lower level of detail.

It definitely wont work on iPhone 4 or below, iPod touch 4 or below or iPad 1.

I hope your friend gets the chance to explore the world a bit. I have an update coming soon that is more optimized so that might help too.

@dhammerer: Proto wrote on page 19 that he got it running on a Mini, but with low-res textures and reduced framerate.
I suspect a memory issue. Did your friend reboot/shutdown before starting Brightridge?

You can use apps like Battery Doctor to check memory status, and B.D. allows to cleanup without reboot.
Also, do you have other apps running as well, and is the Mini jailbroken or not?

EDIT: Proto beat me to it ;)

She did everything she could to get it to run without crashing. That's why I asked. She doesn't mind the money she's out but she's sad that it doesn't work. And I'd try it but not until it works for her.

She doesn't have many apps running at all. And her mini is not jailbroken. She doesn't even know what that means.

What device are you running it on?

And she knew it might not work because she doesn't have retina display.

But she wanted to try it and she's sad she can't play it. Reading through the posts here I'd like to try it to but not if it won't work for me. Don't have retina display either. Am not going to buy an iPad Air either when my Mini works fine right now and fits in my pants pocket. Guess I'll be a customer down the road.

    @dhammerer:
If your friend and you are willing to help Proto out with figuring out why it crashes on her Mini, here is some stuff you can do:

    1) Sync your iThingie to a computer and send the crashlogs to Proto.
On Windows, they end up in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice\<devicename> .
There you should see logfiles in the format "LowMemory-2013-12-16-201737.log" and "<appname>_2014-07-29-175207_<devicename>.ips / .crash .
    On a Mac, you should find them in " ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<your iPhone’s name>/" , see e.g. here: http://bjango.com/help/crashlog/

    2) Download Battery Doctor (it's free) : https://itunes.apple.com/nl/app/battery-doctor-must-have-battery/id615987910?l=en&mt=8
Check how much memory is in use/available when nothing is running.
Then start Brightridge and see how much memory it uses up.
If the first check shows a lot of memory in use already, use B.D.'s memory cleanup function. I do that all the time, and it works great.
IMPORTANT: You should ABSOLUTELY NOT run Batterydoctor with an active network connection, always switch to Airplane Mode first. I caught it sending a metric f-ton of collected data about my device and what I was doing (including which sites I visited etc.) to hell-knows-where.

Before I forget, I am running on an Air, so I didn't have any problems yet.
But I had other games crash - some even frequently (hello, X-COM) , and those mostly come down to "not enough memory available".
Memory cleanup isn't perfect, so you will end up with garbage taking up precious space.

I've got it running on an iPod touch 5 and iPad mini, admittedly at a lower res. but we were told it would be. Also it crashes but if I close running apps and reboot it works fine. There's a diagnostic menu in your settings there's sometimes pages and pages of it and I've no idea how to send it tho. That's helpful I'm sure! (Sarcastic)

The SD version of GoF2 was relased a year or so before the HD version and spent the time upgrading. Robert is trying to go in reverse which isn't easy. It can't be easy making your game look worse.

:) it is kindof heartbreaking to trim it so much. But i've worked out a good system with separate scenes that lets me keep adding to the both versions of the game (high and low detail) without compromising the other. It's a great learning experience too being forced to cut and prune. At the end of Update 1.5 the game will be a lot leaner and less code heavy than it was at the start, so that will help all around:)

I can understand why you love your mini - I loved my mini too - it has a lot of charm:)

please have her try closing the open apps and restart one more time. I don't know because one iPad mini is ostensibly the same as another, but in the wild i think there are differences - maybe minute hardware differences from different suppliers? the OS version? Installed apps - but the close and restart works so often so if she has the patience to give it one more try i hope she will.

BrightRidge is 1 of 4 environments im releasing so if you want to check in down the road too that will be great:)

Rebooting helped. Thanks! But she has to reboot each time she loads the game.

I watched her play and it was very satisfying to move through the world and explore. Having a save feature would be very helpful.

Good to hear it works now for your friend ;)
To avoid the rebooting, go for the Battery Doctor I mentioned earlier. The "free memory" function does the same as a reboot and is faster.

I've noticed that too. Since the ipod3 I've downloaded stuff and played it only to read later that other people have said doesn't run on theirs and vice versa. There does seem to be a variation in hardware.

Sold. SOTC is my favorite game too, it is 10/10 brilliant and if your game is inspired by it, I cant help but buy.

I do hope you update it! I dont care about fighting as much but I love to explore and find things!

Thanks Xexist:) I have a big update almost ready - 1.2. It includes new shapechanging, new enemies (The Skadad), dynamic weather, new UI and extensive options, quality controls, and jumping. The jumping is especially cool - you can run, flip and leap like an acrobat and it opens up a lot of possibilities.

After that 1.3 will bring even more mechanics, then 1.4 will bring quests. I hope you'll keep checking in.

Man, I wish the Last Guardian would come out. But i dont know if that ship has sailed. Anyways loved, loved, loved Shadow of the colossus. I have the soundtrack on my mp3 player, and running across the back of a high flying serpent above the desert was one of, if not my favorite, moment in game.

Thanks:) It IS cool that people keep coming to the forum, and i appreciate it so much because its the fuel that keeps me going,

You know what? of course each individual will have their own opinion, but personally I think the jumping DOES rock. I cant wait for you to try it. its a seemingly small addition but it brings things to life. You can also slide and roll down hillsides, and when you jump there is a random movement of either a straight jump or a front flip - doing a few of those in a row is really fun.

    The Skadad

Skadad means corrupted in Swedish. It’s the perfect word to describe the new not-quite-enemy in BrightRidge. Covered in a black, corrupting oil, Skadad generally leave you alone, skulking around the woods and across the landscape. Antagonize them and they will fight back. The big addition is your new LIGHT power – swap it in and you can burn the darkness off the Skadad, revealing the villagers underneath. The Skadad themselves are victims of Dark Fountains that spew a viscious oil-like substance from deep in the earth. What this is and why i encroaches on the land will be revealsed in the quests of update 1.4, but in involves terraforming and the aftermath of a much larger species - the Behemoos - that existed before humanoids rose to power (they may even make an appearance;)

New Camera options in action, allow you to zoom WAY out. If you look closely you can see your player very very small in the center of the screen, standing on the statue. All shots are from iPhone 5S. You can keep moving after setting the camera, so if you want to play BrightRidge from, say, a Diablo 3 point of view you can

This is a shot of the starting area, just because:) I've added some extra detail, and now when you close your game, you will respawn nearby where you last were, instead of always starting at the same place.

I was going to post some images of jumping but you don't really get a feel for how cool it is from a static screenshot. Anyways i am finishing the Skadad, then i have a few more housecleaning items - then i will submit update 1.2 to the app store.

And if anyone like the game, i hope you will recommend it to people. So far i've sold almost 3000 copies, which is pretty inspiring, but i'll need to do better than that to be able to really make this more than a spare time project and give people the games with the level of polish and attention to detail i really want. Most of the responsibility is on me to improve the game and make it better and better (until update 1.5, after which you will get to see the second location, the ancient sandswept dunes and green oasis of DoonPillar) but i also need the help of all of you. So any ratings, reviews or word of moth helps. And most importantly, just saying hi and sharing your feedback, A lot of what people have said has really helped me to improve BrightRidge:)
