@protopop I'm not sure if I posted a comment here or on the TA review thread... I'll try to recreate my message. I was wondering if it would be possible to offer two game modes one with and one without quests. The quests sound intriguing but I wouldn't want them to interfere or change the way the current open and explore world experience is today. I'm not against the growth, expansion, and inclusion of exciting new ideas but in the current state the player gets to truly explore with no pressure but adding quests could change the feeling of the experience. As I am not a programmer I don't know if this is even feasible but thought I'd ask. Love your app and unfortunately haven't gotten as much time since my two flights to okay it much but still impressed with what you have done!
Thanks for rating this thread Kyoshirin - it helps encourage people to give the thread and the world a chance
Thank you Ive been working on it and have improved the Wind /Dust storm effect. Storms also disable the sunlight, add fog and obscure the sky now. Plus they affect the trees (swaying in the wind) and grasses. Whats cool is you can be running along and just blast of wind and dust crossed your path for a few seconds. this kind of random procedural environmental weather really adds to the feeling of immersion in the world. Maybe I should make a rule of thumb to stop refering to BrightRidge as a game and refer to it only as a world since thats more in line with what its trying to be.
I haven't tested it yet on A5 but it SHOULD work. Im making the weather systems very optimized, so as few particles as possible without making the effect look cheap.A5s have no problem with the snowfall currently and these systems are just about as powerful. Im making it part of each update to test each of the new additions and make sure they work across systems. If it really does cause a problem i might simplify them or disable them, but i will probably add a weather on/off option in quality settings.
Thanks! I did read your question on the app review page - its a good one and i answered it there, ill copy paste my answer here as well: "Thanks imdakine1 wow, I'm relly glad you're enjoying it. It's nice to know i'm able to tap into something that some people enjoy and to be a part of that. Maintaining 2 separate projects would be unweidly but don't worry, I totally get what you're saying and I'm taking steps to mitigate the 'corruption' for lack of a better word of the experience. Basically if you just want to walk around, explore like now you can. It's only if you want to dig deeper that the quests will appear. So only if you speak to the Spirit Hunter (one of 3 new characters) will he send you on a quest. Otherwise the world will be just as peaceful and natural as ever. Im also trying to create quests that further the story of BrightRidge and keep with the exploration and nature theme. (only if you follow the path of Strength will you do any combat). My strength isnt really in combat deisgn but my interest at least is in digital nature, and any quests i do are really more, as Eric Ford the reviewer so elegantly stated "some kind of system for motivating players to further explore". The other aspect is there is a new enemy coming to BrightRidge - but i think they're quite cool and spooky, and if you dont want to deal with them at all, youll be able to "banish them with the light", a new skill im giving the player. I'm pretty excited about where its heading and thanks to people like you and your support im motivated. I hope this sounds cool and soothes you worry about it. It's kind of cool you're concerned because it means there's something special there. Its kind of like BrightRidge is a real wilderness and your the ranger, afraid that civilizations going to come and spoil the land Maybe i should add a ranger character called Dakine." OK copy/paste done - it's me again - live so yeah, it will really have the same unspoiled experience, but a nature based narrative will be there for people who want it. So far a lot of the additions i've made for update 1.2 are very in line with the current world theme - turning into a butterfly, dynamic weather (see above), turning into a butterfly and flying across a field in a storm is quite an experience and thats the kind of thing i want to offer. But i also like quests but i dont think of them as "go here fetch item" but more as ways to help interact with the world and enjoy it. So less MMO-ish and more 'experience'-y
@protopop.... Thanks for copying and pasting your reply to my question in the review forum. I use the iPhone and iPad app and can't always figure out where the different forum or threads are etc... I'm pleased with the direction you are headed and it does seem as if you've thought about the quests enough that it would a be a great addition without detracting from the initial open world exploration. I see the world in a similar way as GTA V which I've played a bit and end up just trying to explore and do limited missions. Just driving around or riding a bike or going on a boat I was as to see what the gta v works was as a living breathing world. Their quest format works well as options when desired but just hanging out and exploring is also an option! Thanks for your continued creation and wiling to be such an engaged developer!
Dude those weather effects are AWESOME!!! Now if you could just add tanks, machine guns, power ups, and multi player arenas like Modern Combat it'd be PURFECT! I hope people eventually "get it" that every game doesn't have to copy the elements of all other games they are accustom to in order to be great. I love watching this evolve into it's own.
@Hypocrypha: Fantasy "tanks" ? Like, riding around on an elephant or dinosaur? Multiplayer dinosaur races!
I don't care about the combat if protopop doesn't want it.I feel this one game is much better without it.Skyrim nailed it when it comes to exploration IMO,Hunting could be in,Cooking, crafting, etc.
Quest Preview - The Three Paths Upcoming quests follow three paths. There's some combat and violence in the path of strength, balanced by speed and spirit paths which are close to nature. They all lead a different way to deal with a threat to the environment. The relevant symbol will appear above someone or something that can ask you to take a quest for that path. Quests are coming in update 1.4 By the way update 2 is coming along fast. I have dynamic weather and a new UI options that give more control to the player. You can jump, position the camera how you want it, shapechange into a butterfly and theres even a playground where you can start and stop the weather.
That all sounds great, looking forward to each update as it comes. It's interesting that you've released the game in such a way that we can see it's progress through various stages, and you can have us be your play testers and report any problems to you.( happy to do so, in case you're wondering), gives us a clearer insight into how the whole process works and we can join in with two cents to aid you. Apart from some little dissatisfaction when the first build didn't work on older devices, this has been one positive forum thread all the way through. Speaking of Colossi have you played Horn? That's a great game! I think it's free or at least it was. Now there's some bi creatures! I loved the pov view from the Cuthbert colossus, showing how tiny you are. Gives you some perspective.
Those symbols look so cool :0.... i think a save method is being worked on so ill ask this will you be able to reply quest if youre interested in the other paths as well? or could you make different save files to go through the different paths just curious
Just a quick note - they work on ipod 5, just tested it Im taking extra care to test as i go, and am also testing loading a different scene for each device (right now i load one and 'turn on' the extra detail if it detects a fast device). There's quality controls coming in the update, so maybe people will be able to turn of such and such effect if it crashes and let me know if there's a specific effect that causes a crash.
Thanks The hammer and the vine are the two pieces of the games logo - strength meets spirit and fused together with speed I think multiple save slots is a really good idea. depending on how complex it is ill look into adding it for the quests, although i cant guarantee it. I know theres a few quests that prohibit you from attaining the top rank of another particular path, but you can do different quests from different paths concurrently, you just have to eventually choose one to complete all three requirements for that path. For example the spirit path has a requirement you dont kill any animals. as long as you resist the temptation to do that you automatically have 1 spirit rune. But the path of strength requires killing an animal, so you might gain a strength rune but lose that spirit rune. Another has you traveling back in time before BrightRidge Inn was built, and making a choice between paths - so only one type of path rune could be gained in that case - its a give and take thing
Color me even more impressed Your quest ideas sound intriguing and like you put a lot of thought into them, cannot wait to see them live. If you want to test them before releasing the update, I'm game.
Thanks! I'll take you up on the offer as soon as I figure out how to use TestFlight and will PM you the details
New Review! 148Apps has reviewed BrightRidge! Now i have 2 reviews which is very encouraging. The update work is going really well and im very excited to push the new version out there You can read it here: http://www.148apps.com/reviews/nimian-legends-brightridge-review/
Congrats on the review just read it ! and looks like everyone is hungry for the quest/purposes and talking about those consequences haha and sounds awesome about the multiple save files i only asked because knowing me i would be very curious in trying every quest to learn as much as i can about the different paths if possible ( I'm awful at choosing) again I'm looking forward to the quests and Null testing it makes it sound even more reassuring
