Woah! You're an insanely fast worker. Null only mentioned "Shapechanger", like, half an hour ago. And it's already practically in the game! Particularly can't wait to be the whale. I live in England now, but I can remember growing up in Vancouver Island by the beach and heading out to the sea on a little rowing boat, only to have pods of grey whales suddenly rear up all around me. You can fool others into thinking Brightridge is a fantasy world, but I know better that it's really the best parts of Canada brought into digital life. With added colossi! Speaking of which, if you're really looking to add some fire and brimstone to the ol' ridge, this would be pretty ambitious, but I could see somewhere around update 18.4 using the Brightridge backdrop for a straight-up Shadow of the Colossus-style dreamy battles with towering colossi and evil giant ents game (between the exploration). If makers of games like SOTC refuse to make IOS ports, then, like with Oceanhorn vis a vis Zelda, someone else will do it for them. And it's not even theft, really. It's taking a unique one-off game style that works and extending it into a genre. If no one had done that with Mario, for example, we would never have had Platformers. I'm happy with just the exploration aspect for now. And getting to be all those animals will be beautiful. So glad I spent 69p on this little world.
He is a damn hard worker,I don't know if he is working full time but that's some great progress.I believe he is going to turn this game into something special no doubt. Sotc was one incredible game equal parts exploration and combat,I still play it frequently and it never gets old.It work of art really no matter how dated the graphics may become or whatever it's just ahead of ut's time tbh.I would love sotc style combat myself how feasible it would be or whether the protopop wants to make it into a game like that remains to be seen.
I too look forward to seeing how this turns out. As You say the best classic games never age or look dated, like SotC and Skies of Arcadia and many others. They stand the test of time. I've got R-Type, Flashback and Speedball2 on iOS and they're still great games!
If I remember right, it should work already, but you will experience occasional crashes due to memory constraints. Protopop mentioned on page 18 ( http://forums.toucharcade.com/showpost.php?p=3299846&postcount=173 ) that he is working on reducing textures etc. to make a graphically simplified version work on A5 processors, estimated for the next update.
That's funny what you said about digital Canadian nature - and right on the money originally the game was called Nimian Hunter : Salvation (and even befor that, Nimian Hunter : Mentipede). I cant find the pictures now but in it you fought a literally 1km tall 'Mentipede' from dragon back. The whole idea of giant beasts to hunt was central to the game so im right with you about the colossi stuff. In BrightRidge the giant pipes found in the world are created by Behemoos, these are the giant creatures and they will make an appearance in one of the other chapters coming up (Residi Bay will be the 3rd chapter and its cliff walls are often attacked by Titanic Seaskralls, something youll see in that game). Basically if i could make a spiritual sequel to Shadow of the Colossus i'd do it in a heartbeat. I think im capturing some of the lonely nature i found so captivating in that game That sounds awesome being in vancouver, im more an east coast guy but i admit the natural beauty of the west coast, those mountains and oceans, dwarfs what we have here. You're lucky you got to see that. PS thanks for rating my game on the thread home page - every rating helps!
you can red my answer to sinagog above for some insight into that - bottom line: id love to do a sprititual SOTC sequel, most of my games have been inspired by that and there are some Behemoos, giant creatures, that will be in the next chapters. Since we're on the topic: Some of my favorite games: Shadow of the Colossus Skyrim Fable Mirror's Edge Remember Me Diablo 3 Tiny Thief Brother a tale of two sons
I never played skies of arcadia (id like to try it) but i remember the screenshots and reviews back when i first started reading game magazines. There was that flying ship and those screens just fired my imagination. I remember them even today. Hmm, i wonder if i can find a copy. This is why we need a way to archive old games so we can play them after the systems dissapear. I think it was a dreamcast game. Speaking of dreamcast, Jet Set Radio was one of the best games ever
Nullzone pretty much summed it up. It will work on A5 devices but theres reports of crashes for some people that a restart of the device usually fixes. Im still optimizing the game so there may be better performance as time goes by, but there's probably a hard limit of how much i can get onto theA5 devices - i'll keep working on it though.
SoA does live up to the hype! It just keeps getting better all the time! I played the DC version then I got the GameCube version which I still have. Although I don't know if my GC still works, ever since I got my first ipod, my 360 and GC have hardly been touched for a couple of years now, thanks to games like this. Also isn't JSR on App Store? I'm sure it is. Edit: yeh it is. I just checked.
Hope this works. I find the game keeps crashing and apart from keeping the game open it doesn't seem to save. Am I missing something? Nice graphics though.
Sorry, I cannot remember which device you are on. Anything newer like iPhone5 or iPad Air should run smooth. Brightridge currently does not save your position; about e.g. activated Towers I am not sure. Protopop mentioned somewhere that he wants to add a save option; but I cannot recall right away how far down the road that is, considering the sheer amount of changes & additional content he already has in the pipeline.
It doesn't necessarily save but if you do something like activate a tower it stays activated. Like the ability to change into an eagle. If it crashes, turn off apps running in the background and reboot. Yes it works on 5th gen ipod. It's what I'm using.
I really appreciate you answering the questions (Nullzone too) - it helps because im not always here and you know about the crashing, so thank you bigjack I didn't even think about closing background programs in addition to restarting the device - thats great advice and im gonna start using it. The number of crashes reported has gone WAY down since version 1.1 so hopefully version 1.2 will be even smoother Im working on the dynamic weather system and will have an info update about it soon - its really cool
I was just thanking bigjack, and you too for helping to communicate about how to fix crashes. Its a great help the update is going really well and Ill have some news about the weather shortly
Thanks for coming here Lokina to ask this question. Nullzone and bigjack's advice is right. A restart usually fixes the problem. He also mentioned closing your background programs too which i didnt think about. Ive been trying to figure out why it would work on one A5 device (iPad mini, iPod 5 etc) but crash on others, and maybe the number of programs already running is also an issue. Anyways i hope this works - please keep me posted
Protopop man your hard working quickness never ceases to amaze me I'm loving the butterfly idea and the others ideas that they have been posting here the weather dynamics sounds pretty cool as well i think once you develop your worlds and keep exploring and gaining skills I also think it would be awesome to see a shadow of coleuses type of game mixed with exploration ( maybe adding to that in the future worlds ) I'm really looking forward to the quests this thread is becoming one of my favs to frequent now oh and i added that thread rating didn't know you could rate threads lol
Well we help when we can. You're a busy man, making a good game better and the less problems people have the more posititive reviews you get, the more games you sell, the more you are encouraged. It's a win for everybody. It works on mini too, although needs a reboot etc to encourage it. It's worth some minor hiccups for a game this good.
Update 1.2 Preview - Dynamic Weather BrightRidge Update 1.2 includes dynamic weather. There's light rain, wind, heavy rain and storms. Rain lasts anywhere form 30 seconds for light rain to 2 minutes for a storm (which actually feels quite long). It won't rain above the snow line. Sometimes after a light rain you'll get a rainbow for a minute or two. The weather is determined randmomly, there's a chance for some precipitation every 5 minutes to 10 minutes.
