The grinding is the game. There's no endgame.
It's a retro high scorer. What is important is the feeling of getting better at each round.
And you definitely sense progression, as you level up your dudes and get better at it.
So imho if you do all the leveling up at the start you're missing a lot of the experience of the game.
Anyway if just playing the game feels like a chore, obviously one shouldn't continue to play ;)

The full game is free, although the grind will be long without any IAP, but evthg can still be obtained with patience, which is not usually the case in freemium. IAP makes you gain playing time, but there are no timers, it's more a question of how much free time you have and how much you value it.
That's why I bought the red gem and not consumables. Because that way I still enjoy playing to grind, only 3 times faster. But if I didn't enjoy the grinding at all, I wouldn't play! :)

Not sure I'm making sense, but I got to go ;)

Yeah it makes sense. At some point with games like this if it's not fun then really there's no reason to play because it's not like other games where if you push through a hard spot then there's some reward, some victory, some sense of satisfaction of completing something to make it worth it. I hope though they add something to this game so it's not just grinding for the sake of grinding. It needs something... well... worthy of the word "Quest".

I do love games with grinding in them, but more as a side option to making progressing easier rather than having that as the only thing to do. It's like being set loose in a Dragon Quest game and being stuck in the wild with no towns or people to talk to or bosses... just an endless grind and if you survive long enough new characters that need a lot of grinding will be unlocked.

You grind to be able to progress enough to unlock a new character. I bought the red gems unlock but left the character unlocks alone so I had a goal with a reward to obtain.

As for the grind I do wish they had more levels to gain for each character but each one gave less so that the overall bonuses were the same. The grind for 100,000 gems is brutal and it would have been nice to break it up and give smaller rewards more often.

I feel like I should mention that the graphics, soundtrack and overall design and control are very good. Which is the only reason I bother to complain about the other stuff.

If anyone is interested here's the number of enemies at the end of each level. Yes this is a simple pattern of them just adding 15 enemies each game, but this may be useful for someone calculating exp or something. You get 2 exp for your lead character no matter who does the kill. So if you can reliably make it through Forest 2, then that would mean you would have killed 540 enemies for 1080 exp. So you can get a later acquired dude to level 1 without spending gems pretty quickly in just one game with the new character as lead... and through three or so plays afterwards can get them to level 2 fairly easily. Note I haven't confirmed those last few levels, but they should be accurate.

Level : Total Kills for game (number of enemies in this level)

    1. Forest 1: 15 (15 enemies)
    2. Graveyard 1: 45 (30 enemies)
    3. Sewer 1: 90 (45 enemies)
    4. Courtyard 1: 150 (60 enemies)
    5. Castle 1: 225 (75 enemies)
    6. Dungeon 1: 315 (90 enemies)
    7. Depths 1: 420 (105 enemies)

    1. Forest 2: 540 (120 enemies)
    2. Graveyard 2 : 675 (135 enemies)
    3. Sewer 2: 825 (150 enemies)
    4. Courtyard 2: 990 (165 enemies)
    5. Castle 2: 1170 (180 enemies)
    6. Dungeon 2: 1365 (195 enemies)
    7. Depths 2: 1575 (210 enemies)

I couldn't say it any better.
You said something that's always been true for Nimblebit games and it has for NQ as well: everything can be obtained without paying a cent. Tokens (as well as tower bux and plane bux) are given away for free at an acceptable rate: in Pocket planes I managed to gather something around 5000 bux every 10 days or so; here in NQ, in a 500-700 kills game you get around 6-7 tokens (and 3-5000 gems with red gems IAP).
People are angrily criticizing this game. I still enjoy it even after so much time has passed since it was released! ;) I guess in the end it's always a matter of individual taste, but I can't get why people who aren't into arcade-ish high score games complain that they quickly get enough of this kind of games. As long as the game is free, it's also free to move on to another.

Also, we don't know what's in the mind of the Marsh brothers!
I expect a fine tuning of the arena experience, obviously new heroes to unlock, achievements, new upgrades and new features (why not, as somebody already said, some new game modes with more RPG features and real quests or missions).

    TA1 guild score is 6281.
    I'm 11th in TA1 guild with 220 kills.
If I add the 16 top scores in TA1, It's about 4200 kills.
The 16th has done 189 kills.
If I assume the next 14 scores average at 150, this gives a top 30 total at around 6300.

So my guess is that only the top 30 scores are counted for the guild score.

Beware if you're below 30th rank in any guild for the reward!

Has anyone else noticed an IAP price change?

I bought 200 tokens for £2.99 a couple of days ago, been enjoying the game so much I just went to buy some more, only now it appears to be £6.99 for 200!

I noticed the same. The other day I was debating whether to buy the Hydra or not and I remember it being $.99 and I convinced myself today to get it but it went to $1.99. I thought it was just my imagination at my first.

The character unlocks were a dollar before (.99). Prices on tokens and gems have changed from .99/4.99/19.99 to 1.99/9.99/29.99

Interestingly, the red gem unlock is still 4.99.

Glad I'm not imagining things then.

Shame as now once I've spent my tokens looks like what was a great app will now just get deleted :(

I can't stand playing without the speed boost so no tokens = no fun (imo ofc)

I am only as far as Castle 2, so I am not sure how far one can go, but the developers are "playing" Graveyard 3.

Looks like they raised the prices and lower the awards.

I have finally had some time to sit down and play this and it's a good little game.

    First point,
I'm confused by people who complain about the grind, as a few have said before me, the game is the grind. If you had everything right away, this game wouldn't last long.

This leads into my second point:

I think the real complaint is the lack of change throughout the grind. I don't mind games that I need to play a lot in order to unlock the next thing that will change the game up. The issue here is, you grind for something that isn't really noticeable. By leveling up a player, that doesn't change the gameplay. Think to nimblebit's pocket planes. You would grind for a plane that could go further, perhaps across the ocean. Well that Completely changed the game and the options you have.

I get that it's a high score based game, and I really enjoy that. But I think the people are annoyed by having to grind for not much reason. From my understanding, they had different items in the game but decided to simplify it. I feel these could have led to some strategy and needed depth.
Regardless, nimblebit has always been one of my favorite developers. The hours I have put into sky burger and scoops is sickening but worth it. Congrats on the release, I'm really enjoying myself.

The Red Gem is a gem/coin doubler.

Indeed it is but the game is not balanced correctly for it. I was saying there should only be a coin doubler and no other IAP. In a perfect world once you buy the coin doubler the game would be balanced and the grind would not be so steep.

I have made it to the 3rd levels. It gets very difficult, but tokens are more frequent.

Exactly. Grinding isn't the problem it's grinding for nothing. You could say that leveling up let's you get further but there are only 9 area maps and they are roughly all the same size and shape minus a couple having small walls on the center outer edges. After those 9 levels you wash and repeat. The only major difference beyond enemy types from level to level is that you get 15 more enemies to battle than the last level. So it just seems to build. IF after The Depths 3 there was a nice game over screen or just something to suggest an overall goal, I wouldn't be as negative as I am about this. Though honestly I probably would still be a little negative since there are no achievements and that to me is a huge part of playing any game with a lot of grinding and progressing through tougher levels. At least with GC Achievements I get my score bumped up a little for playing the game which isn't much but I've got a long way to catch up to some of my friends that have been on GC since the beginning. :p
