I got me one of these sensors a couple weeks ago and I'm loving it. I started running since April, and this thing is doing wonders to keep me motivated. So, who has a Nike+ sensor? There's some really cool stuff you can do on the Nike website, like creating challenges between friends, check your data and goals, etc. In just a few weeks there will be the Nike+ 10K marathon, so I wanna get in shape to participate. Who's with me?
Shouldn't the accelerometer be able to do that without an extra sensor? Anyhow, it looks like a great thing for runners. I've been on the fence about [app]PushupFu[/app] for a long time.
With the accelerometer you could shake it like crazy and get points. I think the Nike+ has something that stops that from happening...
It doesn't work like that. I had the Nike+ for ipod nano some years ago. Back then, you had a bluetooth transmitter stuffed into your shoe (or get a velcro pouch to thread through your laces). This records the impact of your running to determine your pace and thus, your speed, time, etc. You also had a Bluetooth receiver module plugged into the base of the Nano, that receives that data, and stores it into the nano. What the iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 2G did, was integrate that receiver into the body. I have to say that I was very impressed with how it all worked, as you can sync the Nike+ data to their website, and track your progress alongside your running partners. So, technically you could be in a "race" against others by referencing time and distance, but not barging against each other. Very Clever. Haven't touched it since upgrading from the nano to iPhone 2G, but will look forward to it all over again when I eventually get a 3GS.
Actually I just purchased one sensor last night Will try it out this weekend (or hopefully tomorrow!) I think the sensor gives a more accurate for speed and distance travelled compared to using the GPS in our devices. I've been using RunKeeper but sometimes it just does not register properly. Edit: Just bought MotionX GPS (sale for 2.99) and it gave even worse readings GPS is just not working out for me these days (its raining season in Singapore).
I love it- it's part of the reason i didn't switch from an iPhone when I upgraded my wireless plan in July. I have Nike+ Shox and it definately keeps me motivated while running - I'm not training for a marathon or anything like that, but it really does help me with my weekly jogging schedule
Hehehe.. I think Nike (and Apple?) conceptualized that power songs are useful for most people and that its supposed to spur them on. For me, I usually take off my earphones when Im running the last stretch. Primarily because when I sprint, my earphones will come off anyway lol Btw, is anyone using Nike+ with non-Nike+ shoes? Im using Asics and I figured I'm just going to tape or tie the sensor somewhere on my shoe lol
I use a contraption of duct tape and two velcro cable ties that I built back before all the accessories started coming out to attach the sensor to non-Nike+ shoes.
It depends on what device you will be using the sensor with. If you are using an iPod Touch 2G or an iPhone 3GS, then you only need the sensor and not the receiver. So it will be 19USD from the US Apple Store. If you have an iPod nano, you may need the sensor + receiver kit. Its 29USD from the US Apple Store.
Eye of Tiger is the best power song If you guys are up for a little challenge, make a Nike+ account and post your usernames.
Alright, I just went on my first run. I think my sensor was not giving proper readings though. Its definitely secured on my shoe (no unwanted displacement / vibrations) but I placed it near my ankle instead of near my toes. The 45 degree tilt was probably too much and it was more inaccurate than it should be. It was off by about ~6metres (~20feet) every ~400metres (~0.25mile). Calibrating it twice didn't help either Will try attaching it lower next time.
First of all, I would love to have one of these... I'm a runner. And second, at 10K isn't a marathon... A marathon is 26.2 miles. A 10K is only 6.2 miles.
