It understands german, but I am not really sure I will talk to my phone, I havent used the current speech recognition at all. I just hope iTunes Match comes to europe soon. Legalize it!
The thing is, it's just like the tablet market. People don't want a tablet, they want an iPad. Similarly, mass market consumers want an iPhone because Apple has done a fantastic job at marketing them as a cool device that does what people want. Compare this to Android advertisements which often make very little sense, comparatively. Mass market adoption of gadgets has never been secured by impressive spec lists. Smartphones have reached a market penetration now where they're appealing to -everyone- not just tech savvy individuals who care about processor speed, next-generation networking, and all that. The iPhone does that, and will continue to do that all year, regardless of what the Android market does.
If they don't want a tablet and want an iPad why is the kindle fire about to become the fastest selling tablet ever ? http://feeds.gawker.com/~r/gizmodo/full/~3/2IVO_c9r8rI/kindle-fire-pre+sales-may-stomp-ipad-sales. It's also funny how the Galaxy S2 managed to outsell the iPhone in multiple Country's like the UK and Australia if people aren't impressed with specs. Pretty much every tech and news site on the internet has called the 4s disappointing that's my opinion as well I think apple may be able to turn it round but the 4s isn't going to be looking very good against it's rivals in 6 months time in fact it's slightly below par now. Will be an interesting year anyway I imagine.
It's the fastest selling tablet because $200 is impulse buy range for most gadgetphiles and there's lots of crossover between iPad owners. Hell, I even bought one. At the end of the day though, the Kindle Fire is a simple streaming-centric media consumption device, nothing more. As far as the UK and Australian markets and the Galaxy S2, I bet if you looked hard enough you could find regions of the world where series 60 Nokia phones are selling better than the iPhone. And doesn't every tech and news site think every upgrade is a disappointment? It sure seems that way. The rumor mill blows things entirely out of proportion, only a few things that were rumored happen, and then tech bloggers get butt hurt over how disappointed they are. Meanwhile, the people who make up the bread and butter of Apple's customer base, normal people who just want an iPhone, are excited a new one is coming. We'll see how things pan out, of course, but historically betting against the iPhone has been a losing matter. What I'm curious to see is what happens to Android adoption now that the 3GS is going to be free with contract. Most non-techie people I know with Android devices only have them because they were free while the iPhone cost $200-300.
I wouldn't bet against them either but I think the sooner an iphone 5 comes out the better for them the competition is getting pretty fierce and seems to be getting it's act together recently. I'm going to withdraw from this thread now as I have made my opinion clear and I'm sure it's annoying quite a few people. I'll also concede the kindle fire does help your point about specs not being everything but for a lot of us they do make parting with money a lot easier.
The thing is, technology seems to go in cycles where something is entirely new and spec-centric techies get onboard as early adopters before things get normalized by the mass market and stop being important to drive purchases. A perfect example of this is the HDTV market. I bought my first HDTV in 2001, paid nearly $7500 for it. I remember pouring over stats and reviews for weeks leading up to the purchase. This was before Anyone settled on any kind of standard for HD inputs, or really even what the "main" HD resolutions would be, so I bought the one with the widest variety of options, the highest contrast ratio, the best brightness, and the "best" of everything else that seemed to matter. Fast forward ten years later, and HDTV's have become common place. And what's the best selling brand? ####ing Vizio. Why? Because they managed to market a brand of TV's that seem to satisfy all the requirements of what you should have in a HDTV- 1080p, LCD, lots of HDMI ports. Everything else has basically become inconsequential in the eyes of mass market consumers. Now the cycle seems to be starting over with the addition of 3D. For years, this is how the smartphone and tablet market was. I did the same thing with wacky Windows Mobile and Palm OS devices, waffling back and forth between crazy HTC contraptions and Palm Treos as phones came out with better keyboards, nicer screens, and all that jazz. Android is just continuing this trend. The iPhone has normalized all this though. Similar to how people just go to Costco and buy whatever Vizio TV has the most HDMI ports, people just will buy whatever the new iPhone is. The Kindle Fire is the same phenomenon, only the massive pool of ebook customers who ignored other ebook readers for a Kindle who are now just buying the next release.
I'll be ordering the black 64GB 4S on Friday, though I'm not particularly happy about the lack of a larger screen all I really cared about was a storage bump. They weren't going to put a processor faster then the A5 in there yet and if the new antenna system works as well as they say I'd rather have that then pay more for "4G" service. It's got to be a major let down to current iPhone 4 users but if you've been using a 3GS for 28 months like I have it's going to feel like a substantial upgrade. I put the iOS 5 GM on my 3GS last night, so far no major surprises. The alert banners are smaller then I thought they'd be and seem to disappear too fast. I wish you could shove the Newsstand icon in a folder or hide it somehow, but that's a really minor annoyance. On the upside the ability to use custom sounds for everything is nice and notification center is convenient. I've opted to keep most of the iCloud stuff off.
Hopefully that suggests that what an earlier user said was true: the iPhone 5 and iPod Touch 5th gen releases will be combined with the iPad 3 release.
I expect them to announce the iPhone 5 next summer but it's doubtful they'll release one in the next six months. If they tease people with the 4S and people that can't sit and wait any longer buy one then get shafted by a full fledged iPhone 5 release before June that would be a horrible decision for the company to make.
thanks for the input crex.. did not mean to stir the pot or add to the drama of the iphone/adnroid fanboys... i use android because i use a prepaid phone. i use a phone in general very little.. hell even with prepaid i never have used half of my mins and my normal internet use is 2megs.. so for me nexus works.. i will be upgrading to the nexus prime tho i think. as my phone is way out dated.. just like my broken gen 2 ipod.. it served me well and i spent major money on the app store. laughs.. but i enjoy each game i bought. on android i use it as a phone and casual games when im at doctors or what not.. my ipod i def used that as a gaming device.. at home, or away.. at any rate its all good. ill just shop around for a new ipod. and whatever i can get a good deal on, be gen 3 or 4.. i did get a email from amazon asking if i was interested in the new ipod touch.. was sorta funny to me cause there big sales pitch was its in white.... i dunno, i found it extremely funny that was the only sales pitch they cold use this go around. chris.
Ugh...wife's LG 'crapset'...err handset is due for replacement and she's looking at the iPhone...don't know whether to trade up my iPhone for a 4S or larger capacity 4 and let her have my 16Gb 4. Not sure the spec bump is gonna be worth it but the 32Gb 4 for $199 is tempting and there might be deeper price cuts in the near future to move inventory. decisions, decisions...
And that's the point for the success. Ask these people and they would have prefered a free iPhone over a Samsung or other mobile device. It's like always: you get what you pay for. And lifestyle in form of a branding can cost a bit more.
Totally agree-my contract ends in december and stuck what to do-i have a 3gs will IOS 5 run well on this? Any ideas what i should do? Remember the iphone 4 seemed to release not long after the 3gs
My contact ends this month... what a coincidence. Still not sure... upgrade from 3GS to 4S or stick to my 3GS for another year and buy an iP5? Tough, tough decision.
Have to point out the 3GS was far better than the 3G that my girlfriend got-hers basically ground to a halt after installing IOS 4,think I will take the leap- A5 chip like my iPad-all new games should take this into consideration and may even stop supporting our obsolete 3GS' lol So better camera - full hd video - retina display - A5 chip - and Siri which I'll never use lol Descisions....
