I call bullshit, the magic mouse uses the same touch sensitive tech as the iPhone it just not incorperated into a display. It's also expensive.
Imagine if all of the casing was screen! That would be pretty amazing. You could open up the camera app and your iPhone would become 'invisible'.
It's an issue of practicality and cost, not feasibility. The value added by adding touch to the back of the device is very little and I'm positive it's not something apple will add to a futureproduct.
Maybe not, but how about the sides? It really depends how much Apple think gaming on the iPhone is worth, but having shoulder buttons could add a ton of functionality to most games.
Sure, because if there's one thing the platform needs it's yet another feature that splits the gaming community between old and new devices. I'd rather them spend the time and money on an OLED display, more ram and OS improvements.
It'd be in the hands of the developers, there's no reason it can't be optional. For older devices just stick more ugly buttons on the screen.
If Apple is serious about gaming on these devices they need to get some real buttons on the thing. The idea of simply expanding touch sensitivity to the boarders makes no sense unless they're planning on using it for something other then games. Touch sensitive volume buttons maybe, or the option to scroll though a page by sliding your finger up and down the right side.
I seriously doubt that they would even consider adding shoulder buttons for the iPhone. It is however, a possibility for the iPod Touch, seeing as Apple is promoting it as a gaming device.
Well yeah, obviously when I suggested it I wasn't restricting it to games. The only problem with having it as a volume control would be accidental touches so they'd have to work around that. Let's not forget that although they're cramming more expensive components into the devices, the cost of electronics is constantly falling anyway, so even if it takes slightly longer we should eventually be seeing big advancements that might not be cost-effective right now. I'm sure they've got a thousand upgrade ideas scribbled down on a board somewhere.
That's kinda my point. Right now the display is outdated, ram and battery are lacking, the os still doesn't support backgrounding and springboard is due for a massive overhaul. All that needs to be taken care of before I could even start to care about a feature this trivial.
