I wonder how well this would work if you could also use an algorithm such as what was revealed lately. It seems like the algorithm could be used to process the video to find out if the camera is actually moving vertical or horizontal to correct for inaccuracy in 2 of the axis. http://info.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Personal/Z.Kalal/tld.html This app looks interesting regardless.
the big problem is not the accuracy of the data coming from the iPhone, that indeed is quite precise. The problem for some users may be the rolling shutter and the video wobble problems that are present on the iPhone that may reduce accuracy if you move the camera too fast. For those cases *that is to those who demand high precision *you can always strap the iphone to a high quality camera, in the same orientation, and use Axis3D just to grab the data, not the video. Another use of Axis3D is as a gizmo to create animations. Imagine that you would like to animate a plane doing all sort of movements like yaws, rolls and banks. How long would you take to create the animation curve? Now imagine using the iPhone like it was a plane and rotate it in the directions you need, in real time and later exporting the movements you did with your iPhone to your favorite 3D package as Maya, 3DS, Blender, Softimage, Lightwave, Cinema4D or other package that can read Collada Files. Wouldn't it be great? The possibilities are infinite.
