this is tease of the century!! as soon as i saw the dev post i was like "hooray update is here!!!" Nice trailer, but argh! want this update nao!!
Yeah, I also mistook the trailer as confirmation that the update was live This is one of my most anticipated updates - been looking forward to this one for months!
Repeatedly crashing as soon as I log in could just be the servers slammed by new users making accounts and signing in though. New iPad with 5.1 I'll try on my iPhone 4 once it finishes downloading Edit: working perfectly now. iPhone worked fine so I checked my iPad again and have had no crashes.
ok, so after an initial panic about crashing issues the app has settled down and seems to be working fine to create and start games. the game is great, we all know that. the only issues i have are the push notifications not working at all for me and also the chat doesnt seem to work. these are less important than the game actually working, but the push notifications are really important for the async games. its good that the online can be played both async and live, this is a great start, hopefully can just tweak things a bit and it will be perfect. Edit: another thing that occurred to me, any chance we could have friends lists? Having to use email for setting up private matches is a bit awkward.
Guys, sorry for the problems. We'll be sending an bugfix update today, that wil improve game stability and fix push notifications.
Update looks great on the new ipad and I look forward to taking the multiplayer out for a spin. Just a quick question - is email the only way to notify others to join a private match? Is there any kind of friend list functionality? I have a bunch of friends on my GameCenter friends list that I'd like to invite to play but not sure I know how to do so.
As soon as I saw this wasn't using Game Center for mp my interest plummeted. Requiring email addys to play is completely undesirable. Really disappointing, especially after the interminable wait.
I can only speak from my own experience ... but the majority of my online/Game Center "friends" are typically people I only game with and not people I intimately know and communicate with through email or any other means than posting in public forums (if even that). As a matter of fact, I don't know the email address of a single person on my Game Center friends list, making this restriction extremely limiting. I don't think my circumstances are terribly unusual, either.
As much as I appreciate the hard work you guys put into the multiplayer functionality (and I'm digging a lot of the enhancements to the game engine itself), I have to agree wholeheartedly with Sladeum's assessment above. Unless I desire to just play against randoms, the multiplayer feature in it's current state is of limited usefulness. Many of us here on the TouchArcade forums (and I imagine this applies to many other ios gaming sites) have built a list of like-minded GameCenter friends that play many of the same types of games. As mentioned above, I also doubt I know the email address for 95% of the folks on my GC Friends List. That is what makes the GameCenter friends list so appealing - you have a stable of like minded gamers that you can always count on to game with, and private information such as email addresses is hidden and unnecessary to invite folks to gaming sessions. I believe having some sort Friend List functionality for your game is going to be paramount to fostering an online community.
