Alright as some of you know, the girl I like doesn't live close to me, until 2011/2012 when we can finally afford a place together (man do I need a job). Bearing this in mind, I want to give her a gift next time we meet up.

It has to be something small that she can keep with her all the time, and nothing stupidly expensive and flashy like diamonds... it's not a wedding anniversary, just a token of fondness :)

So who's got any ideas? Portable and meaningful, those are the key words here.

Edit: and no... not an app ;)

What does she enjoy doing, or what are some of her hobbies?

If she enjoys writing, a nice refillable writing pen goes a long way. You're probably looking in the $25 - $35 USD price range for something like that. I know that my fiance is really enjoying the one that I gave her...

I'm not sure she ever uses a pen really... just keyboard. She's studying photography but almost anything to do with that is gonna be expensive.

I gave mine Godiva chocolate and flowers that's all. But it really does matter what she likes to do and what her hobbies are. Then again, who doesn't love chocolate?

True, but I need something a bit more permanent :) It has to tide her over until the end of next year when she moves in with me.

Yeah, most things photography-related are going to be pretty expensive. This has nothing to do with photography, but are you musically inclined at all? If so, you could write her a song. That's something that she could bring with her everywhere on her iPod(If she has one).

Most women absolutely love homemade gifts from the heart ;)

That's a pretty good idea... I can't sing though so there wouldn't be any lyrics. I could probably get something quite cute out of FruityLoops... or a less-complicated program.

Photography... get some leather or charms or something and make a little picture frame. One that she can put on her key-ring and it'll withstand everyday abuse, with the transparent bendable plastic instead of glass.

Yes, a song or poem written by you is always very good.

And also, there is an affordable present which is very romantic,

It is a heart made from silver, split in two halves, something like this:

This is not expensive, you can get it everywhere and its meaning is great - only together you two are a whole being. I'm sure she would love that. ;)

    edit:

you can get this as yin/yang, too:

That would be good, I wonder if I could find one on a bracelet...

A case for her ipod (or equivalent), or for her phone would be good, cause she'd always have it with her as a little reminder. You could personalise it a bit to make it more meaningful, or if you can, shop online for it to hunt down one that she'll really love.

edit: should probably point out, I'm thinking of more of a pouch than case specifically for her brand of media player / phone

Oh, on a bracelet? I don't know. Ask your local shop for jewelery or look at amazon. They have quite some jewelery stuff there.

Btw - do I need to mention that everyone of you is keeping one half of the heart? ;)

As long as women fall for that it is quite o.k. ;)
No, serious: women love these ideas - and I like them, too.

Btw., did you people know that "gift" is the German word for "poison"?
Even the pronounciation is the same.

So, when you give your girl a gift.... *snicker*

Girls love to browse in jewelry and accessory stores and love to have an endless array of hair accessories, bangles; charms… even iPod or cute iPod cases etc. A charm bracelet, jewelry box or necklace hanger may go down very well! When in doubt, you can always purchase a gift card… Book vouchers, Amazon vouchers, iTunes vouchers and hard cash in an envelop have always worked for me.
