Some tips to help you get a high-score

As Lord Gek and many others have pointed out, there is a certain method of playing that will help you get a high-score.

I hope Lucidsphere continues to improve the game and offer more strategic ways to win rather than just delaying the game as long as possible.

Here're some of the things I did to get the no. 1 highscore on gamecentre (194,400):

    1. Get an investigator with super stats
    - I aim for the Scholar buffed with a +2/+2 to make him 7/6. He will one-shot all monsters except for a couple of them (3/6 - dimensional hound and 6/6 - haunter summoned by summoner).
    - Use potions (which add mythos points as well) to try to make that 6 stat into something higher. If you can make him 7/7 or better, he will be invincible.
    - Use this investigator to kill the 3/4 D20 (flash eating worms) and 4/4 D20 monster (soul collector) so you don't have to worry about him gaining stats from killing your weak investigators.

    2. Get an investigator with maxed bonus to hit damage
    - I use the summoner who has base 1D10 hit damage and try to get a +12 (reanimator+shotgun) so I will auto win against all monsters even if i have to roll the dice.
    - Use this investigator to kill the 1/1 d8 monster which mimic your stats (shadow in the mirror).

    3. Manage your cemetery
    - As you place cards in your cemetery, insert them neatly so you can easily get to the category of card you need.
    - Make sure you put hazards and portals either at the start of the end of the cemetery, so the game will not allow you to flip past them if you can place them on the game board.
    - You'll need at least 1-2 hazards saved this way for end-game (additional mythos points on the final investigator)

    4. Use your debuffing relics wisely
    - Relics that debuff the stats of monsters can be used to give your maxed hit bonus investigator a fighting chance.

    5. Create a super monster
    - I use all buffing relics to create a super monster that will one-shot any investigator.
    - This is used to keep one slot on the game board open so the game doesn't end until i am nearly decking out.
    - Once i am ready to end the game, I will use banishment on this monster to one shot it.

    6. Get an investigator with Dark Pact
    - Spell casting allows you to stack even more mythos points onto your investigator above ally, weapon, hazard.
    - This investigator will allow you to close portals which may otherwise cause your doomsday calendar to be repaired if you draw investigators when the game board is full.
    - It also allows you to kill the super monster using banishment as above.

    7. Manage your game board
    - Make sure that the super monster is one-shot killing only 'vanilla' investigators
    - Each hazard, weapon, ally will cost you 1000 additional mythos point if they are killed with the investigator
    - What this means is that you should delay putting any allies/weapons/hazards whenever possible until you need to.
    - Note that some allies are 'cheaper' in cost e.g. 750 vs the usual 1000 mythos score, so if you have no choice but to sacrifice some allies/weapon/hazard, use these ones.

    8. Checklist for end-game
    - Make sure all your investigators have an ally, hazard and weapon on them (you saved some hazards in your cemetery right?)
    - Make sure you have used dark pact and used up all spells (including the summoned ghoul and gaunt)
    - Make sure you have used up all your relics (including the golden casket from map+tomb raider)
    - Make sure you have used up all your potions (including the first aid + moonshine)

    9. Close out the game
Certain cards can force a closure to the game to avoid a 'draw' by decking out. They are:
    - Master of secrets: this ally will 'repair' the doomsday calendar once
    - The avenger: use the chained captive on the orderly will cause this card to appear. It has to be used immediately, so if your game board is full, it is used to repair the doomsday calendar.
    - Not ideal for high score, but if you are desperate, you can also force a win by putting a portal in the last slot on the game board and draw investigators to repair the doomsday calendar.

Nice guide, except for the doomsday calendar (his correct name seem to be "Chtulhu Tzol'kin", read sometime ago in some post regarding this game)...

I'm joking of course, I've appreciate very much your guidelines especially the checklist. Sent you few secs ago a friend request for GC (you may check my nicknames/tags below in my firm).

Let's rock and climb that damn ranking! :)

As this doesn't support auto-rotate, which way up is it on an iPad 2? With the home button on the left or the right?

All iOS games at this point should either auto-rotate or have an option to flip the screen (leaving the accelerometer on just for rotation eats more battery!)

Primary reason? Headphone jack on iPods and iPhones are on different sides, leaving iPhone users wanting the home button on the left, and iPod users wanting the home button on the right. Otherwise the headphone jack digs into the palm of your hand (if you're using headphones.)

How pronounced this is for iPads, I don't know as I don't have one. But I hear that different cases can make it more comfortable holding/sitting the iPad in one direction or the other.

A huge number of people have covers that fold down and around so that the iPad sits up at an angle when placed on a flat surface.

Without auto rotate you stop this feature from being used which is a massive inconvenience.

I know you're a dev and probably not used to using these things "in the wild" but I can heartily suggest getting an iPad and playing your product sat on a train or laying in bed or propped up on the counter while you cook dinner which is how most of your customers will be doing it.

    Almost all of them.

Which way up is this game on an iPad? With the home button to the right or the left?
If it's with the home button to the right, it will be upside down with the iPad 2 smart cover being used as a stand.

Well, native to your device there is Safari, Mail, Youtube, etc.

I'll link a few of my current favorites that flip...

Ascension: Chronicles of the Godslayer (Auto-rotates)

    Elder Sign: Omens (Auto-rotates)

The Quest This one lets you either turn on auto-rotate to ALL FOUR DIRECTIONS or manually set it. :p This is not a new game, either!

I'd wager that 75% of recent landscape games feature either auto-rotate or an option to flip the screen.

ok, ok, thanks, persuaded, Im just old hardcore PC gamer, and not recognizing all these new mobile features ; ) I can't promise such update in next few days, there is much to re-do for this, but this feature will be in top-list of priorities for updates.

It is really important with the ipad2 as I said before. The way the smart cover for the device works, it is designed to hold the tablet at a modest angle on a flat surface like a table. The cover only attaches to one side of the device. So if put the iPad into what is often the most comfortable position to play in, your game is displayed upside down.

Finally got the Soldier card from scoring 168600! Yay! Had a run of good luck and managed to make a 5/7 with 1d6+4 and a 2/6 with 1d8+10. Those two were enough to kill those 4/4 1d20 outright and make minced meat of the 1/1 mimics! I managed to make an 11/11 monster too. Those -1/-1 and -3/-3 with Banishment as a coup de grace was oh so sweet.

I think I unlocked all the cards for the vanilla Necronomicon Redux. Now to get the expansions!

Would be nice if the developers could make an option to view the certificates we've acquired.

Would be great if Necronomicon and ArkhamPI were merged as a single app.

Just bought the expansion pack! Noticed an error with some of the cards so far:

Haunted Violin, the description says -1 to monster defense and sanity but the number showned is actually -2 to both.

Secret Vault (+2/+2 to monster), Evil Offerings (+1/+1 to monster), Stolen Antiquities (+2/+2 to monster) can be placed in the Cemetery, which renders them completely useless as a buff to the monsters. Why would anyone want to place these buffs on the monsters if they can just keep it in the cemetery. Unless you want a higher score, these cards do not serve any purpose.

The point is that the monsters guard the treasures hence the difficulty increases if you want a higher score. If you are not playing for a higher score, then i'm really not sure why you bother with the game.

Why I bother with the game is because it is fun for me, not because I want a high score so I can brag to people across the world whom I've never met. From your post, you are obviously simple minded so let me spell it out for you.

Being able to place the monster buffs in the cemetery takes away the challenge from the game. After I bought the resource pack, winning became ridiculously easy because the game then became a 'wait till I can make a super Investigator then stomp on the monsters for epic points'.

Before the expansion, I actually had to be careful when I use the buffs/debuffs. Because I HAD to place the buffs on the monsters, it made for some ridiculous moments where I became utterly swarmed by powerful monsters. Those weak Investigators could actually turn the tide for me and I had no qualms about using my best allies or weapons on them.

After the expansion, the weak Investigators became sacrificial lambs. You won't put your best buffs on them because there was no point. Simply put, the game became less than it was before. This is because I can contain how powerful they become and make them powerful just when I want them to be, i.e. when I know I can kill them. That's not challenging anymore and takes the 'fun' away from the game. Yes, it allows me to get a higher score but it is no longer fun.

The game has become like Tetris, except the blocks never drop any faster and you could choose whichever block you wanted when you wanted it.

That's funny, I hadn't even realized you could do that now. Up to this point, I thought the new version had made things harder.

And I agree with you! The nature of the game as it stands now is to have a careful play to get a high score. In the past, there were real situations where you could lose but losing is really not going to happen now, hence aiming for the high score becomes the only reason to play.

That's also why I've asked lucidsphere to consider more strategic ways to win.

Apologies skarsnik if I came off abit strong in my post.

p/s: for some reason, ArkhamPI no longer works after upgrading Necronomicon Redux with the Resource Pack expansion.

Any chance to improve the tutorial and make it more interactive and easier to understand? I hate being beaten too much by not reading the "manual" sufficiently...
