I think it might have accidentally been released early. I have a feeling that if you bought this, you WILL be able to redownload later. Just a feeling. I'm grabbing this if it becomes available again. I haven't played an hacking/rpg hybrid since Shadowrun, I don't think. By hybrid, I mean a game which clearly delineates between the two gameplay modes; not a game like Uplink which disguises its rpg elements within a hacking "simulation".
The developers have a contest in that forum for promo codes, in appropriate location, and discuss March launch so I am sure The Nameless will be back soon. Otherwise I'm sure they wouldn't bother with all the promotion/marketing.
Intro: Since many people seemed to be interested in the game when it was released earlier, so I decided to TOFT. I like RPG type games and it looked interesting to try (being a programmer myself I was curious about a game with hackers as its topic). By now I finished the base game, so I can finally share my opinions. I mentioned earlier, that my only problem with the game was its crashes. I received a beta from the developers and I can say, it was fixed. Other than getting a warning that my phone is low on memory I got no crashes at all (I have an iPhone 4S with the recent IOS). IAP: No IAP at all. Interface: It did not really look like an RPG at first glance, but only because it has a very own system. It actually very much works well as an RPG. The game was made to fit one-handed gameplay and it was a pleasant surprise to find out you can switch between right and left handed modes (with the zoomer on the map). It is also easy to navigate between the menus, it is not complicated at all (you tap on your characters to check skills, health to use items and the menu to check cards, stats, reach options and save). One thing is, that the game has a save option. You can manually save (and you can actually have 2 games parallel), but there are some events, when the game saves by itself (when you get a card or finish an event). RPG System: I think the most important part of an RPG is its system. It's a bit similar, yet entirely different than usual RPG systems. You can have at most 4 characters, each with their own skills. You have health and energy points. If your opponent attacks you, you lose HP. If you use a skill, it costs energy. It worths to mention however, that health and energy is shared by your characters. In each turn, you can choose only one thing to do (use a skill of one of your characters, defend or use an item). However there are some attacks, that affects only a character, not the entire party. So one of your character might get disconnected, so that you can't use his/her skills until reconnected. There are a couple of status effects and special skills, that adds a lot of strategy to the game, especially later. You don't have XP, but you have ByteCredits (BC) and ResearchPoints (RP). BC is the ingame currency, and RP is a bit like skill points. You get a couple of RPs for battles and many BCs. You can buy skills, battle items, boosts and cards from BSc, and you can increase your skill levels from RPs. The game has a very interesting card system. You get them from battles, events and you can also buy them. They give you buffs (more skill levels, more health and energy, more attack, etc). You can have a card at 4 levels: 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. Each level gives you additional extra. You can try to upgrade your existing cards using BCs or RPs, or simply wait until you get a better one from battles. I found this card system very clever and unusual. Gameplay: There is no map to wander, but still you can see a map with cities, available missions and events. You simply tap on it to select. Sometimes you get dialogues between your characters or events, sometimes you get battles. Actually there are many battles (they are mostly optional, but sometimes you need to do a bit of grinding to progress with the story) but as the game goes on, these become more and more strategic and hard.Q The story might be a bit confusing at first (it is linear by the way), but the dialogues are fun to read and the characters are likeable. It is not too dramatic, but more of a parody with many reference jokes. The game is quite long. It took me more than a week with a lot of gaming hours and even after beating the base game you get an extra to keep on playing. I still haven't finished that extra part. I easily have 10+ hours in it if not more. Graphics: It has a Japanese style graphics. The characters are well drawn. I don't really like the map's outlook however, but it actually fits the game well and is easy to overview. The enemies are also a bit strange looking, but the battles themselves look actually very fun (I mean, the background catches on fire just from hacking and there are even cannons! etc XD). Music: I usually play with no sounds on, so I'm not the best to tell anything about it, but I think it does not fully match the game. The battle music for example would be great for a racing game, but not the best for a battle. The sounds are also a bit strange. Who knows, someone might actually like it the way it is. Just one thing, it sounded a lot better with headphones on. Overall: The game's best part is its system and the battles. It might be a bit monotonous at the beginning (it gets hard fast), but then becomes much more strategic. I don't regret TOFTing the game at all, I really had fun with it for a long time and I still have. Those who like RPG for their systems and numbers (lot of numbers ), will definitely love this one. Those, who love jokes or might be simply interested in hacking in a fun way, might also like this game.

The battles are getting really tactical later and there are also quite some strategic decisions to make. Not regretting the purchase, I like it alot! There are always lots if things to do. No crashes, no IAP, highly dedicated developers - guys, go buy it. Oh, btw., haven't taken a code, prefered to buy the game to support the devs. Since I am a Matrix / Wargames / Neuromancer fan and enjoy stats and number juggling, I'll leave 5 stars for the game at the App Store. PS: the whole thing is so damn easy to control with touches and swipes, you'll see that the devs put a lot of thought into it. The only minor point of criticism are the musics. Some tunes fit very well, but as Estrica said, in battles, the musics are a bit FF battle style - but nothing really disturbing. As a suggestuion, Devs should give the choice to listen to your own music library; I'd instantly fire up Waltari's "Space Avenue". verlaine Well-Known Member Jul 26, 2012 216 1 18 #53 verlaine, Mar 17, 2013 Last edited: Mar 17, 2013 Great game -- but I'm still having *a lot* of trouble with a post-game pyramid: Spoiler I've maxed out all possible health, skill and card upgrades at this stage (including the Birds of Prey one) and still can't defeat the 1999 A.D. Tier 10 boss. It always unexpectedly nails me with a Banhammer attack, which seems unfair because there's no real defense against it -- especially when your maximum skill level is capped at 15; the boss does massive damage; the 'Key Logger' skill doesn't always work; and even if/when the 'Key Logger' skill works and you try to 'neutralize' an imminent Banhammer attack with the 'Kill' skill, there's no guarantee you'll succeed. If I can't get through this pyramid, it makes me wonder about the post-1999 AD pyramids. AAargh! I Am Hooked! Starting off, I wasn't too sure how much I'd enjoy it, since it's an 'rpg' but the UI is set up so that you don't explore, don't button mash, ect... But once I played for about 5 minutes, I could definitely tell that this was something EXTREMELY special. The plot/story is very well written, and if you're a fan of Hollywood type hacking movies or cyberpunkish anime/books/manga, this will be right up your ally in that regard. The amount of depth in the combat, upgrade and item systems is surprising. As you progress throughout the game, you'll be able to purchase and upgrade various hacking skills, as well as collect cards which boost your stats. The cool thing about the cards is that they're randomly generated. You can get a 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% card, increasing the additional stats with each percentage. Also, you can "re-roll" cards with your earned 'currency' to take a chance at increasing it's stats. On top of that, there's also rare and uncommon versions of cards. So two cards that are both 25% might have different stats depending on the cards rarity. There's not really a grind involved. There is some grinding, but it's definitely nothing that gets boring, exhausting, or frustrating. Between each story progression segment, you can battle as many other people as you want... earning more currency which you can use to upgrade and buy your skills, buy boosts, items, and even more cards. One thing that I do wish was more integrated into the game is your decision making. So far, the only thing that is effected by dialogue where you have multiple decisions to choose, is whether or not you're given a side-quest or items (like an HP pack, virus cleaner, ect...). If this was carried over to the main story, and had more of an impact on the outcome of the game, I think it would have added an entirely new level to the game. But aside from that, I do not have one complaint/suggestion. I haven't come across any bugs, the UI is perfect, the speed of the game and it's progression is perfect, the gameplay is incredibly fun, entertaining and addicting, and once I complete the game, chances are, I'm going to replay it. I'm enjoying it THAT much. Definitely have to recommend this one to anyone even remotely interested in it. It's one of the best games I've played all year. I like the direction the devs have taken with the plot: It advances along with the game; dialog is frequent but quick. It never gets in the way of playing the game. It's the model I find most appealing; I'de rather advance the story/play/repeat with fast pacing rather than wade through 10 minutes of dialog; play for hours...then another wall-o-text or cutscene.
