NYZ2 will indeed give you the option to use melee. Unlike many games though, you will be able to legitimately use close combat, but really only realistically as your main weapon if you use your level up skills and buy supporting equipment. Nothing like hacking up zombies with a riot shield in one hand and an axe in the other ;)

As for open world, no... but we have a ton of variety in areas, with lots of details. Many areas will be very open and large, like central park, open streets, etc. But one of the great parts of NYZ we think is the atmosphere... so you'll go from claustrophobic apt hallways, to open streets, to flooded subway tunnels, and much more!

Nope ;) You can freely explore each of the environments.

The more I read the discussions on this the more excited I get. Of course it doesn't hurt any that I just finished watching season 1 of The Walking Dead and have been reading the comic books as well, so my brain is being inundated with end of the world zombie type stuff. The one big unanswered (and probably unasked) question is: will there be zombie gnomes?

Hehe... Cant wait! Free roam will be great for this game, as long as there are awesome strategic spots in each map ;) like one for sniping, one in a long hallway for funneling to spray and pray with rifles, or one in a three sided space or even a room with one door to wait in and beat up zombies with melee and shotguns...

Haha, of course... you're actually a gnome, so too bad you don't really get to see him in action ;)

Definitely... one of the most important things for us is that we keep the same general feel of the first one... in other words, you'll have to be aware of your environment, which that - along with enemy types - will play the largest role in which weapons you should be using.

exactly what I was hoping for! Having free roam will hopefully end up just being an evolution of the strategic gameplay we saw in the first one, and I heard something about a riot shield and axe combo... Does that mean dual wielding, or will the riot shield be a specialty weapon that can be held in the left hand and used with single handed weapons, while no other weapons can be held in the left hand? I don't know which I prefer, but I like the idea of having the riot shield be the only thing you can hold in your left hand, or maybe you have to unlock dual wielding of single handed weapons through the skill tree, nothing too overkill, but being able to wield a pistol and an axe at the same time, or an uzi and grenades would be cool, but would require a change to the basic controls, which I don't know I'd like, so maybe only having the riot shield be able to be held in the left hand would be a good idea, dual wielding of the same weapon would make sense, cause then you still only need one fire button/tap on screen, kind of like the final upgrade of Uzis in NYZ 1.

No, there isn't dual wielding, per se. Riot shield for ex is an item used specifically with melee weapons. Equip it and whenever you select a melee weapon you'll pull out your riot shield automatically. There will be a few specific dual wield weapons though. Just like the 1st game, you'll have your equip slots, and it's up to you to customize your load-out with the appropriate mix of weapons and items. In NYZ2 though, there will be a few more support items that you will really have to think about using against certain enemies.... A gas mask against poisonous and disease ridden enemies, Kevlar for really heavy hitting enemies that would otherwise kill you in just a few hits, flares for the dark, etc. It really makes things more interesting ;)

P.S. we've already got a host of skills, but I think it could be cool to hear your guys' suggestions. Those that are cool enough could very well be added! Keep in mind skills must be PASSIVE abilities! :)

Well... First of all, all the skills from the first game should be included, and the saving survivors mechanic should return in someway, be that them running to you even as you move around the map, or you moving to them based on their tells for help. Some new skills could be related to melee weapons, maybe a quicker swing/reload time skill. Maybe call it armstrong? I wouldn't recommend having a skill to increase the number of weapon slots, unless it really works well with the gameplay progression, but having that skill would limit creativity and freedom in the earlier stages of the game. Since it's free roam, a skill to increase walking/running speed would be very welcome, as would a skill to increase rate of fire on semi automatic or bolt action/pump action weapons like the hunting rifle and pistols and the rail gun, as well as on the pump action/semi auto shotgun. Not making it automatic though, just increasing rate of fire. Could call it double tap (I know it's been used a lot) or trigger happy. Another skill could be an accuracy based skill, making hip fire more accurate each time you level it up, could call it steady or somthin' like that.
And a quick question, you said something about skill trees earlier on, would those be based on money or on some leveling system like experience?

Haha, yeah it was a pretty cool weapon... might work something in there ;)

No ETA yet... development is going pretty fast though. We're realistically hoping to get beta going in anywhere from 2-4 weeks or so... don't quote me on that, as unforeseen things pop-up in development all the time :p
