i've had my iPod touch 2nd gen for exactly one year this friday (I got it on the first day that they initially arrived at my local apple retail store, which also happened to be my birthday :D ). I've almost never had any serious problem with it until today, when while i was watching a movie, my screen started blinking and going crazy, and now, whenever i touch it, there is no response. I will try to slide to unlock, but it won't do anything. The buttons still work, and when i plug it in the screen changes to the image of the battery, but it won't respond to any touch. tried restart multiple times, but still nothing.

Any suggestions/troubleshooting help that you guys could offer me?
i thiought i was a whiz when it came to my iPod, since i've had it for such a long time, but i gues not. is apple trying to tell me that i should trade up to the 3rd gen that they are undoubtedly going to announce at their event tomorrow? (joke)
p.s. i want to avoid restoreing it, cause i don't want to lose all of my data.

My suggestion to you would be to walk into your Local Apple Store (without your iPod) and ask to buy the Apple Management Plan or whatever it's called, that gives an extra year of insurance. This should cost about $70, but if done right you should be able to switch out your iPod Touch for a new or refurbished 2G, and you might even be able to get some money off your 3G purchase.

This happened to me and I fixed by restoring through iTunes.

P.S. If you back up your iPod first u won't lose data

It has only hours left to live. I recommend you say your last good-byes now. Tomorrow, have a special ceremony by the sea, placing your iPod in a little balsa boat followed by tiny lily candles.

    lol.

Try this but 2nd but try to restore your iPod first (backup your data btw). If a restore doesn't work do what Brazilian Rider said.

Doesn't the Manufacturer Warrenty last 1 year? You could hurry up tonight filling everything out online and send it express in the morning(assuming you don't live by an Apple store

i lawled hard at both AaronAMV and Kamazar; great suggestions.

I bought the Apple Care extended warranty (which might be what Brazillian Rider was talking about) at the same time that i bought myself the iPod; all i know is that i have an extra year on my warranty cause of it. does this also mean that i would be able to effortlessly get either a different 2gen or maybe pay like an upgrade fee to get a 3rd gen as described?
if so, then i think that i'm gonna skip the restore, and just get the new one! (if it's worth it. we'll see)

    normally, no.

if your ipod touch freaks out and stops working....... hopefully?

back when i had my ipod video 30gb (before the times of the iPhone) there came a time when the battery would die after 20 minutes. we took it to best buy, where we also happend to have bought a 3 year warranty, and asked them to replace it. They were no longer selling the model that i owned, and so they gave us a new ipod classic 80gb instead for free, which my dad kept.

**ALSO my sister bought the 1st gen touch, and then two weeks later, they announced the 2nd gen, which i got. mine was better, and so she was jealous. we figured out that it was a defective car charger that stunted the battery life on my ipod video, so she used it heavily. the battery on her touch went crazy like it had on my video. she took it to the apple store, and was able to pay like an extra $30 to get the 2nd gen instead.

    Sneaky sister, right?
