The day has come. My iPhone died today. The bottom half of the touchscreen in unresponsive. Phone is stuck on lock screen and I can't slide to unlock. I can only slide to power off. Did a reboot (hold home and sleep), power off and back on, and finally a restore. Nada! Kind of sucks because my 2 year contract with AT&T ends in 2 months. I'm pretty sure I can get AT&T to not charge data for the last two months. I have the original iPhone and paid $400 for the 8GB. So it's not subsidized, I'm guessing. I think this happened because for the last few days, when I plugged in my phone to the original wall charger, it would run a small current through the back of the phone. Kinda tingly feeling, not as bad as when you stick a fork in an electrical outlet. Unplugging it and back in got rid of the current. Outlets are all grounded, too. Checked with a tool to make sure. What really sucks is that now I can't access over $100 worth of my games and apps! Don't want another iPhone and the wait for the new iPod Touch is going to take forever! Thanks for your time.
I feel your pain. But you should`ve got the extended warranty. That happens with my 2G too . Think I`d better be off eBaying it before it goes completely dead But doesnt that happen to all 2G iPhones coz of metal back? Shame on you. Just a 100 bucks apps so far Why not? Unless you have a problem with AT&T, I dont see any reason you shouldnt get a brand spanking new 3GS. You`d eligible for discount too. But in case you really dont want an iPhone anymore, then you have no option but to wait for sept 9 and hope apple makes the iPods available instantly after the event.
I was under the assumption that Apple makes the best products, so I laughed when I saw they offered extended warranties. As for getting a 3GS, I'm really interested to see what the new iPod Touch has to offer. I do more gaming than anything else. I'll get the iPod Touch if the specs are better.
Sorry to hear that, fearless. It's also possible that you cracked the glass -- I had the same thing happen to me on my first-gen 8 gig after I dropped it and landed flat face down. It was still under warranty at the time, and the nice guy at my genius bar "overlooked" the obvious crack and gave me a new one. The good news is that rumor-mongers are talking about a 9/7 apple iPod event, so it's possible that your wait won't be long. I know that you're trying to get out of the smartphone market, so the 3gs isn't an option -- though, of course, I have nothing but good things to say about "my precious." You're right, by the way -- the original iPhones were not subsidized (that program didn't start till the 3g).
AppleCare has saved my ass more times than I can count -- it's the one extended warranty that is worth getting.
AppleCare is a must. If not applecare then you have lots of other companies offering extended support for your iDevices and they include accidental damage too Btw sent it to AT$T for repairs. May be you`d get this one working for a small fee. Otherwise you`ll have no other option but to either ebay it or replace both the whole screen and digitizer coz in 2G iPhone they are both glued together. Would set you back by about 100 bucks though.
Do you feel naked? Without your phone? Now you know what Superman felt like when he ran out of cryptonite. Any withdrawal symptoms yet? Hives?
It's been a week and I kinda miss it. One thing I don't miss is the frustration with the device. Hated getting calls all the time while playing a game, especially games that don't save your progress. There were other problems, too... I'm now considering not getting the new iPod touch, even though I have so many games on my account. I just don't like being lied to by Apple with how great their products are when in reality they suck! Just can't believe this thing failed before my two year contract was up.
Even the best products have lemons. Just be glad it wasn't a car. I dropped my touch into a glass of tea while I was sleepin. No tellin how long it was in their when I woke up pulled it out and slung all the tea out and it worked perfect. Needless to say I think they're well built. If I were you I'd wait till the new touch comes out and check it out no sense in making all the money you spent a complete waste. Just get a normal cell phone and a touch sorry to hear about this but anything over a hundred buck needs a warranty unless your rich I suppose. ANYTHING
I also hate it when you get a call between gaming or doing something else on iPhone. I really wish I'll get convinced enough to get the iPod touch instead of 3gs now. But the problem is I hate typing with real keyboards in phones. Apple spoiled me with on screen keyboard. So even if I do get a touch I'll still like to keep my current iPhone which will definitely look like a fool with two idevices in my pocket and might even get arrested for indecent expopusre of apple fanboyism in public. Btw did you sent it to repairs yet? How much estimate did they give you? Also it's not really fair to say apple lied about their products. No matter how good the manufacturing quality is, when you're making million of them, there's bound to be a few which won't work as best as possible. Also you got almos 2 years out of your iPhone. That's pretty much acceptable IMO. Not something I'd want to happen with any of my idevices, but I won't blame apple if it does happen with me. I've abused my iPhone way too many times to blame apple if something happens with it now. Just get a new 3GS/iPod after this event(can't believe it's just 2 more days to go now. Yay). This time make sure you get either AppleCare or one of those third party insurance which covers accidental damage and theft etc too.
So... It's been a month and I got me an iPod Touch 32GB. I couldn't resist leaving all those games behind. Not to mention I still have iTunes credit. I can honestly say I do not miss having an iPhone. My L7 serves me well. Just in case anyone cares...
