Hey, I've never encountered a virus or anything of the sort before, but today I downloaded a VSTi from MediaFire and my Anti-virus (avast! Free) said is was "Unsecured" and my computer started going very slow... So either if it's jus avast screwing up (which I don't know how to fix either...) or if it's a virus anybody got any help to give? I'd surely appreciate it because I'm pretty frustrated with this...

The only anti virus I've ever used has been a combo of AVG free, and adware with the occasional Ccleaner run once a month and I've never had a single virus issue in years.

I would install malware bytes to perform a full scan for trojans and viruses, uninstall avast and try the programs I suggested.

Besides a slow down has anything else happened? And have you had any weird pop ups besides it saying it's "unsecure"? Do a control-alt-delete (or whatever it is now to pull up the task manager) and see what tasks you have running, that could be causing it as well. It could be a virus, but from my experience I wouldn't guarantee it, at least not one I've encountered. Have you done a scan with your security program yet? Usually if it's one in the background like that (assuming it is a virus) it'll catch it...

We always use Mcafee. The first and last virus we ever got was on a new computer without it. All of the service guys I've ever talked to say it's a good choice, even though it can be a little strict sometimes, like there is currently no way to "allow" a blocked program besides submitting it to the company for evaluation. Apparently it's fairly expensive, but all of my friends who use it have had the same results.

Yeah, I forgot to mention, it's a Toshiba laptop, and now everytokw I turn it on there's a pop up saying that the Toshiba Service Station could not start up for some reason.

And i don't think I can run a scan with my anti virus right now because it says it's off and unsecured...

You might want to get Microsoft security essentials. Best anti-virus software out there. It's free too just google it. When I had windows it was great! it would give you monthly reports regarding the security of your computer and stuff. Don't need it anymore because I have a mac now and the almost never get viruses :D

If you are unable to run a scan of any type (also try downloading say Malwarebytes or something like that if you can) then I'd advise having it looked at...one thing I notice most of the time when I get a virus is it disables the antivirus. Though half the time my anti-virus catches it...
Also I agree on Microsoft Security Essentials. It's great, though there are a couple viruses that can slip through, it's caught the majority of the things I've had a problem with.

This. Only thing I've ever needed to use. It's cleaned more than its fair share of problems on my PC.

Thanks very much for all the help, guys! I'm going to try scanning with malwarebytes, and hopefully it will get rid of the virus, (if there is one) and then i'll uninstall avast and install Microsoft security essentials.

I'll keep this thread updated if I come in touch with any more problems. :)

Buy a Mac. Best anti-virus is no anti-virus.

I would rather a PC with the occasional virus (which has never been a problem for me) than the spinning beach ball of doom. Sorry using Avid on a PC vs a Mac is a no brainer, macs crash/freeze WAY too much to be enjoyable to use.

Edit - of course this is entirely software/hardware dependent but considering the work I do on my PC and my iMac (mostly video editing) I've had easily twice the amount of crashes on the Mac then my PC has ever given me.

This is true even with Windows. 7 years with no anti-virus... and no virus. HOW DO I DO THAT?!

Oh, and two years with a MacBook that has never frozen :) The spinning beach ball is just a pretty loading icon to me, it's never signified doom. PC/Windows laptops freeze like bitches though.

There really is no reason to spend all the extra money for a mac unless you're wanting to do creative stuff, more specifically for Apple.

Unless your unlucky enough to get a zero day virus, you did something to put it there. I use Avast coupled with the regular Microsoft Firewall. I've also disabled every single Microsoft product/bloatware I don't use. Lastly, I only use Chrome and block all scripts. I also uninstalled java and flash plus disabled Internet Explorer.

Even if I do get a virus, I have everything backed up and will do a factory reset.

If you want ridiculous firewall security get comodo. I was using it for a while but had to reset my computer due to deleting important Windows programs. I'm not using it anymore because it's a hassle to set up but it's excellent IMO.

But anyways run a scan with avast, superantispyware, and malwarebytes. You can even run the comodo antivirus as well, but I think it has rel time scanning so you'll have to turn that off so it doesn't interfere with Avast. If the problem persists then run your computer in safe mode and run the antivirus software or do a boot up scan.

If it still doesn't work, you might have to go to more drastic/daunting measures or just do a factory reset.

i haven't gotten a virus on my new computer, but I've dealt with viruses before. i just had to fix my mom's computer not too long ago. I pretty much just battle hardened it with layers of Comodo and some chrome stuff. There's a crap ton of restrictions on it now, but she doesn't do that much on it anyways.

I have a Mac. I still prefer my windows PC for most tasks, especially when using AVID it's faster and more stable. Oh yea easily half the cost to boot!

You guys just be trollin at this point.

Won't embed it directly as it's a big image but here is my opinion of macs in a nutshell.
