After hearing about your problem, I'm definitely going to SSH into my iPod Touch and change the background so it has 'This iPod belongs to...' and then stick Winterboard in SBSetting's Dock... That way whoever finds it will either have to give it up if I find them messing with it, or be really good at jailbreaking. And if they are the latter, they deserve to have my iPod.
Can it be restored if it's password protected? Probably easy to work around, but say they just use iTunes?

Yeah Im pretty sure they can. All you gotta do is hit Restore. Normally I would say thats bullshit they should work on security options, but lets say you have a password and you forgot it. Then what? You gotta Restore.

nah, i would actually suggest the AR-15. great semi-automatic rifle. the iron sight is great, but if you add a CQB Tactical Sling and Colt 4x20 scope, you're good to go. i dont know about you guys, but in california, this gun is legal
Why don't you just tell your coaches about what happened? You can always ask them to keep your name anonymous and if whoever stole it doesn't come up front then ask your coach to make practice a living hell. Maybe that would teach the SOB b/c it sounds like one of ur teammates stole it.
