Godzilla was fun but it definitely needed more Godzilla and less Aaron Taylor-Johnson (whoever that windbag is). The monster fight(s) were totally epic and that felt like watching cinematic history even if the overlong script beat you over the head the entire way there to present lukewarm adversaries. I'm very hopeful for the sequels... if they are bigger, louder, and more lizardy. It's true of many big scifi/action budget movies (like Days of Future Past, a bunch of talking heads for much of it - still fun) that they can sometimes hold their load for a huge finale and mostly consist of dramatic interlude but Godzilla really grated along past it's initial good graces before delivering. I preferred Pacific Rim over Godzilla (2014); but am hopefully to see more ballistic creature features..
See, I prefer Godzilla to PR due to its slower pace. Movies get so bombastic nowadays that folks expect CGI out the wazoo. I appreciate a film that cares about its story and takes the time to develop it. Granted, I loved Pacific Rim.
That's a fair point... I can respect the force of a powerful story with slow boil suspense. However, I'm of the opinion that Godzilla's plot was horribly botched - the CGI lizard was probably the most realistic part of the film's superhero plot. Initially I was worried Godzilla would just be popcorn fluff... but now I wish it had just been mindless action given what they decided to pass along as narrative. It wasn't horrible... I enjoyed it, but I think Godzilla (2014) missed the mark in what could have been a totally epic modern classic and featured too little drama featuring the lizard.

Just saw Transformers: AOE. Not as bad as people are saying. Sure, it's no masterpiece, but people should know what to expect from Transformers films by now. Giant robots, explosions giant robot dinosaurs and more explosions and shallow human characters to provide a couple laughs.
I like the Scanners cover art, that release will be great and conveniently overlapping with Barnes and Noble's epic 50% off Criterion Collection sale. Hopefully Criterion gets on with their release of The Brood and I've love to ditch my Rabid DVD for a high definition edition.
Oh yeah, the sale started one week early this year! (The online sale is already active; the in-store sale starts tomorrow, but I'm in Canada so I have to order online. It lasts till July 28, so we've got almost a full month of Criterions at 50% off!) Here's what I ordered, all on Blu-ray/dual format: -Scanners -A Hard Day's Night -King of the Hill -A Brief History of Time -Picnic at Hanging Rock -L'Eclisse -Il Sorpasso -Insomnia -The Great Beauty -Judex -The Essential Jacques Demy (6-film box set that includes Lola, Bay of Angels, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Young Girls of Rochefort, Donkey Skin and Une Chambre en Vile) http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Criterion-Collection-Blu-ray-Disc-DVD-Special-Editions/379003202
Nice haul! My wallet is begging me to ignore Barnes & Noble. You are away of the DVD Talk Barnes & Noble coupon thread, right? There's currently one $8 off any purchase coupon that would be a great score on the Criterions. Ok... maybe I'll order "just one," definitely in for Scanners.
The packaging for Scanners is amazing. This is why I love Criterion. Almost every other film company in the US is content with giving us those ugly, cheap plastic Blu-ray cases.
Just saw Dawn Of Planet Of The Apes. Solid movie. I really liked the first one, and this one was good, too. Can't wait to see what else they do with this franchise.
I'm having an 80's night (imo best decade for films ever) Going through this lot:- Ferris Bueller's Day Off The Breakfast Club Bladerunner The Terminator Ghostbusters Back to the Future Die Hard Going to be a late night
