Robocop did nothing for me. Might be because I liked the original better, but the remake dragged on too long and I saw no real antagonist. I found myself frankly counting down the minutes to it's end, actually.
Saw Gravity last night. Pretty good movie, awesome visuals and cinematography, solid performances. Not a bad little story either. Pretty solid film.
The new 300 was entertaining. So was Noah. It has this twist towards the end that you'll either love or hate, I thought it was a nice change of pace.
Just saw The Winter Soldier, enjoyed it very much. After the disappointments that were Iron Man 3 and The Dark World, it's good to see Marvel back at their A game.
Maybe I'm just feeling cynical about the Godzilla remake; hopefully it turns out great. Godzilla is an iconic creature but after 20+ films Godzilla has become a self-parody that's hard to take seriously. The epidemic of modern remakes coming out of Hollywood shows how creatively bankrupt the system is so it's hard to get excited at what appears to be the umpteenth remake being pumped out by studios. The 1998 Godzilla remake wasn't any good. Last year's Pacific Rim was a good example of a film honoring the tradition of Godzilla while also feeling creative and I don't think the Godzilla remake will be able to pull off the same feat. The initial Godzilla-R trailer looks campy with corny narration and excessive fake looking effects (which might be part of the appeal but at this point Godzilla is hardly shocking especially in CGI). The Planet of the Apes franchise is a good example of a series that has drawn itself out but still remained fresh and unique with each installment; the anti-Godzilla - Dawn of the Planet of the Apes seems a lot more interesting to me. Wake me up when X-men: Days of Future Past... that looks like the movies to beat this Summer. [Guardians of the Galaxy looks insanely good too]
This film harkens back to the dark and cynical roots esthablished back in the orginal GOJIRA by creator Ishiro Honda. You may find tat narration corny, but people are buzzing about Craston, so they will show that he is in the movie. I feel as if it will capture the franchise's roots as a bitter reminder of how small man truly in when in the face of nature.
I agree the theme of nature overwhelming man is potentially cool; but they sure do seem to rub it in. The trailer leaves nothing to subtlety. Also, this oversimplifies the Gojira origins where Godzilla struck me as a metaphor for western aggression and nuclear destruction (not nature run amok, but a stand-in for man made destruction). I'm really hoping they pull off the Godzilla remake and it's hard to judge from a trailer and early marketing; fingers crossed.
I don't think anyone is going into Godzilla thinking it'll win an Oscar. HOWEVER, I think it'll be a fun guy movie to go watch with a couple of friends one afternoon. I personally think Bryan Cranston is a terrific actor. He really gets into his roles, and does them well IMO. I'm really worried that DoFP will bomb. I'll go see it because it's X-Men, but I think it's being over-hyped, and will let a lot of people down. Guardians of the Galaxy looks AMAZING! I loved Avengers, and this looks like The Avengers + lots of humor.
