WOOHOO! I finally found Batman: Mask of the Phantasm on DVD at Target tonight. I also got Nancy Drew (the one with Emma Roberts) at Barnes & Noble. Can't wait to see them :D

In my opinion, in this post-Dark Knight world, a gritty and realistic update to the Superman character was necessary for the masses to be able to enjoy fully. The Christopher Reeve era was a golden age for Superman fans of old, but now movies demand more than that... they demand more seriousness. Of course you can still have some goofiness here and there, but the kind of effects and stuff... and even the outfits and sets in the Christopher Reeve Superman movies just wouldn't go well with audiences nowadays.

    That's my opinion at least.

And I thought the action sequences were as impactful as ever because I really did care about all the characters. I don't understand why so many people say Man of Steel lacked character development :(

Going to see Despicable Me 2 and This is the End. Been a while since we’ve seen a comedy.

Saw Kick-Ass and No Country For Old Men recently.

Kick-Ass I don't really know what to make of. On one hand it has some genuinely funny scenes, on the other there's this 10 year old girl going crazy with knives and profanity. A few scenes there were definitely uncomfortable. I enjoyed it for what it was.

No Country For Old Men was very good in the technical sense, but a few scenes were too intense for me to really enjoy them much. The story was simple but told well, though the cop that Tommy Lee Jones plays seems almost superfluous to the story. I should read the book, there was probably a lot of cut out stuff with him.

Oh and I watched the first 30 minutes of The Big Lewboski. I seriously don't know what KJ's hype is about with that movie. Rather uninteresting, forced profanity that sounds really immature, and most of the characters are just stereotypes. I must admit, the opening scene was pretty funny, though.

    You didn't even finish it.

Whatever. The Dude said it best.

Bridges cautions that "Lebowski" may not be for everyone. "Your 12-year-old, or your teeny bopper, or most grandparents just won't get it," he says while making it clear it may be more of a "guy" thing.

But don't think this is a matter of "taste" and start lecturing me about different strokes again. This is a matter of your inability to view one of the greatest movies ever as just that. It's a matter of you being a teeny bopper.

Go watch Sesame Street, you won't have to worry about "intense scenes" and "profanity".

Flawless? There are plenty of other people who share my opinion, or at least had less gave less than shining reviews. Its Meta score is 69.

Just accept that different people have different tastes, geez. I don't write Connector essay-style posts attacking you for thinking Requiem for a Dream was boring.

Maybe it was my jading to the fact that No Country for Old Men beat There Will Be Blood to the Best Picture and Best Directing Oscars, but I was not impressed at all with No Country for Old Men. It's a fine movie, but only a 7/10 kind of movie to me. The story was tired and not done well enough for me to not notice it (as opposed to Avatar or Ratatouille, where the stories are age-old narratives, but done so well that I never noticed). The acting was outstanding and some of the cinematography was good... but overall I felt it was a waste of time but most offensively a waste of accolades.

There Will Be Blood was the most beautiful movie that year. The directing was perfect, the acting was perfect, the themes and messages were deep and thought-provoking, and the story, again one that has been told many times, was done so differently and so well that I didn't even care about its lack of originality. It boils down to the rise of an empire and fall of morality, which Scarface did many years ago, and I'm sure so many other movies and books have also conveyed. But it is so beautifully-shot and well-done that it doesn't matter. There's so much more to it than that.

No Country for Old Men was made for entertainment and trying their hands at adding some moral questioning and light themes of good and evil and where we blur the line. To me it was more of a summer blockbuster whereas There Will Be Blood was infinitely more unique, deep, and interesting, and had themes that I found much more thought-provoking.

Ugh. Again. No Country for Old Men is a fine film. But Best Picture? No. There Will Be Blood should have won, and that is that.

As for Big Lebowski, while I did finish it, I don't know why it is so popular. It seems like one of those movies that gained such ridiculous popularity that more and more people jumped on the pretend bandwagon just to seem "cool" and fit in with all the in-jokes. You gain a lot of respect for enjoying Big Lebowski and making a reference to it... but I can guarantee at least 1 out of every 5 people you talk to about it haven't even seen it. I can reference it all day. Doesn't mean I have seen it.

It's saturated our culture so much that you can be a fan without ever seeing it. And I think a lot of pseudofans will be disappointed if they actually sit down and watch it, because there is nothing spectacular about it in my opinion. I will give it another chance, to be sure, but I was unimpressed the first time I watched it.

So while I disagree with having an opinion for a movie before you've seen it to the complete end, from start to finish, I do agree that it is underwhelming especially considering the obscene popularity it has achieved.

Nothing wrong with someone not enjoying a movie that you worship. They didn't like it. It's as simple as that. While I feel sorry for people that can't feel the same way about There Will Be Blood, Black Swan, and Ratatouille as I do, I also respect their opinion enough to realize that maybe those movies just hit a really nice spot for me. Guaranteed there will be movies I have seen that you would deem stupid and thoughtless, but I see as deep and thought-provoking. But I won't demean your character and attack your dignity and integrity because of your differing opinion. That's just rude.

I hate it when people say "you didn't get the jokes" with regards to comedies people don't enjoy. With Arrested Development, I could understand people not liking it because the humor went over their heads. Or maybe it's just not their kind of humor. Some people enjoy quirky humor, some people enjoy low-brow humor, some people only enjoy comedies with laugh tracks behind them. It doesn't mean they're wrong. Maybe they just didn't enjoy it?

Of course we can argue that especially with a comedy, someone critical of it should have gone in expecting something different. But we could argue that all day and it doesn't change the fact that the person didn't enjoy it. If you force them to watch it again they will probably be more jaded. I can also guarantee that attacking their character for lacking your "impeccable taste in film" will make them even more hateful of anything you recommend them.

Cool your jets, Top Gun. :)

    I loved Ratatouille.

In fact, pretty much any Pixar film.

Ok, forget the cars series. But pretty much everything else they've done is good to fantastic.

    :D :D :D

Truthfully, I don't believe you for a second. Even if he finished it, sat all the way through it, and didn't enjoy it, you would still vehemently defend the movie from your perspective and pick on him for whatever you could find to destroy his opinion.

The one valid point you have is that he didn't finish it. That's it. The rest of your points are quite subjective and you would still throw them at him to get your point across that his intellect is at stake. You would still attack his taste in film, you would still say he didn't understand the jokes... you would still say everything. You wouldn't accept it. You would still defend it.

Ugh... Pixar has made two bad films. Cars 2 and Brave. While Brave is better than Cars 2, it is still devoid of the same passion and ingenuity I expect from Pixar. Feels like a pre-How to Train Your Dragon Dreamworks film, honestly. Just... awful.

Probably right. I like attacking opinions.

Been trying to get him to watch it for months. His not finishing it annoyed me and spurred my post.

This is the End was just ridiculous. Lots of fun moments and plenty of great acting though.

Minions were once again the best part of Despicable Me 2. Not a bad animation.

Saw This is the End a few days ago. Such a funny movie. I expected it to be your average, kind of lame comedy, but it ended up being one of the funniest comedies I've seen in a while. I almost want to go see it a second time. I laughed so much when I saw it.

Also saw Man of Steel a couple of weeks ago, and it was okay. I liked the beginning half of the movie, but didn't really care for most of the second half. The second half was really predictable, with a lot of mindless action and explosions, and very little dialogue. Not a bad movie- it's probably the best Superman movie that has ever been made. Could have been better though.
