    Man of Steel

7/10. Liked the movie in spite of Goyer (more on that in a second). Not as good a movie as Batman Begins but the characters are likable enough that you want to see how their story would develop in sequels. I loved that the story dared to switch up parts of the canon to make the story fresh.

Except for the beginning with Russell Crowe riding dragonflies wtf . I understand thry want to show how different and harsh planet Krypton was, but this was zany even for a Star Wars. Had Nolan been more involved on a script level, he would have circled that section with a red marker several times before burning it while Goyer cried.

I LOVED how Lois straight up knew who Superman was in this movie and the secret identity wasn't even a big deal. To me the potential for their dynamic in future films, where she gets to see the man behind the suit, is much more interesting than Lois being an idiot being fooled by glasses.

For years people have complained that David Goyer, while a great ideas guy, was always the mediocre half of the duo that plotted out the Dark Knight movies, and this film is final proof. Without the Nolan giving the script a final polish, this movie is littered with clunky lines and the only reason I didn't groan at them was that the actors sold then with such eagerness I instead mentally patted them on the head.

The only actor who didn't really pulled this off was Zod. I thought Shannon was terrible in this movie to be honest. He was speechifying his intentions ALL THE TIME and it didn't help that he sounded like a Star Trek captain talking about "prepare the positron magnitron" or whatever. Faora was much more intimidating; if she had decided to cut off babbling Zod's head off and decided to take over Earth, she'd probably win.

As earnest as this movie was, I still felt there was some moments that didn't feel earned.

Superman getting the suit all of a sudden. It's jarring when this lost soul stumbles in seeking answers, a hologram of his father shows him a suit and says "hold dat" and then al of a sudden Clark is walking out like a king.

Pa Kent dying. Doesn't feel tragic cause it doesn't make any ing sense. The entire town is aware or suspicious of what Clark can do, he could have done something to save his father. It is a nice affirmation on Pa Kent's belief that Clark should protect his secret at all costs, even at his life. It's the dying in the tornado setup that doesn't ring true.

And I don't have a problem with the raw idea of Superman killing to save people. He's done it a couple times in the comic books. It's just that in the comic books, he's almost always found another way to win other than killing and lives by that rule, that when he does do it it's profound, cause you know for a fact he had no other choice. If Superman snapping someone's neck had occurred in a 2nd or 3rd film after his no kill rule had been built up, his anguish might have worked better. What I'm saying is I understood the scene, I just didn't feel it. :]

Amd really, if Superman had enough strength to snap Zod's neck, he should have had enough strength to turn his head away and knock him out or something.

Not a review, just my mind pouring out on paper after seeing this. I'm going to see this movie again and enjoy it, and hope that in the sequel Goyed gets relegated to story credits while someone like Jonathan Nolan come in a do the heavy lifting with the script.

About to watch The Constant Gardner for the third time. Probably my favourite romanticish movie behind Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind

Have to wait until next week before going to the theaters :(. Will probably end up seeing MoS + This is the End and then World War Z + Monster University days later.

Watched Gangster Squad on the way to Cali. Emma Stone was hot. Not a terrible crime/gang film.

Going to see Monsters University and World War Z. Not going to bother seeing Man of Steel until there are no other decent films to see. Not one person I know has been impressed by it.

I find it odd that you would see two movies that I'm assuming your friends haven't seen yet and can guarantee won't be impressed any more than Man of Steel, but still refuse to see Man of Steel based on their impressions.

How many people did you talk to about Man of Steel? If you liked how it looked from the trailers, you should give it a shot. It's extremely satisfying and well-made. Some people say it's a little slow and the action comes too heavy too late, but I thought it was almost perfect in its pacing. The origin story is so satisfying, and when the action -does- enter the picture... holy crap. It is intense and will leave you almost gasping for breath.

It's a controversial film for the diehard fanbase, and a somewhat polarizing film given certain ratings... but that's exactly the kind of movie you should be excited for. Give it a shot. Make up your own opinion. Don't let those people dictate what you will and will not at least try :\ You are your own person with your own tastes in film, so don't brush Man of Steel off as a mediocre effort that you'll never see just because of their impressions.

Saw Man of Steel today. I pretty much agree with andso's impressions. Super shallow characters, I felt there was no character development. There was waaay too much mindless CGI action, Zod was very disappointing, I usually find Shannon to be a great actor (especially in Take Shelter, great film) but here, he's just a super cliche villain, I felt his talent was wasted here, same with Crowe.

The fault in the movie isn't with the actors, it's with the script. I literally LOL'd at some of the more ridiculous parts of the script, like "Did he really just say that?!" Almost like the screenwriters just wrote and didn't think twice about how it sounded.

I do like how they set it up for a bigger universe,
    Wayne enterprises, Lexcorp, etc
and am looking forward to see where they go with this, but I'd give MoS a 6/10.

Monsters University was a great prequel. Should have watched Man of Steel instead of WWZ though. It was so damn boring. Will probably be back in the theaters next week to see MoS. WWZ had a full crowd, and the entire audience was laughing during 20% of the film. That's how ridiculous some parts were. Very weak plot and characters.

Really excited for The LEGO Movie. Didn't know it was even coming until the trailer today. 2014!

@MC: Yeah, I was really excited for MoS actually. Really poor choice not seeing it today.

Yeah, the Lego movie looks awesome. I grew up with those things. Will Ferrel's in it, too.

I was/am very wary about MU. Cars 2 was so bad, IMO, that I'm cautious about this one.

Read the book please for the love of everything that is holy, read the book.
    It'll be awesome I promise.
If you see an obituary for Pitt, I plead the fifth.
Also Cabin in the Woods is great.

Yup. Flippin' awesome, I say. I wish we could've seen more of the monsters, though.

Chris Hemworth's character's death was hilarious, too.

I felt it was quite an improvement over Cars 2 and Brave. Thought both of those were extremely mediocre follow-ups to Up.

Well, I'm glad to hear it. I was beginning to think Pixar had lost it's touch.

However, I do wish they'd stop making sequels/prequels and make some more original films again.

Well, technically, Pixar isn't involved with Planes. It's being made by DisneyToon Studios.

I think Finding Dory is next for Pixar. Another sequel...

Well, yeah, Brave was original, but it didn't feel like a Pixar movie. At all. It didn't have the story or characters that Pixar was usually known for. Like Up, Toy Story or Finding Nemo.
