seen: Riki Oh: The Story of Ricky (on cable tv) watch on cable with subtitles, never heard of this crazy 1990's bloody karate movie before. did a search and found it on youtube. Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel read its a classic, anyone else see & like it?
planned on renting WB. but mama was thinking about skipping because it seems like they used the same lady creeper cgi in other flicks.
It was extremely bad. Was forced into watching it by some old high school friends for movie nigh. Terrible choice. Man of Steel and WWZ coming up in the next two weeks!
Wwz They changed so much from the book. This movies allegory- overpopulation! There was no such thing in the book!
Not at all. The only good part was the first "trick" in Vegas but the rest was just plain bad. Spoiler By the end of the film I didn't care enough about the lead character to even care about his evil reveal. My friend who saw it with me put it best: "It's a poor man's Prestige."
So, I think the last post I made in this thread was about The Dark Knight Rises and Looper being my choices for the best films of 2012.... I am going to backpedal on that statement immensely. I saw Looper a second time, and... I was seriously saddened... it wasn't nearly as good as I remembered it being :\ I mean, it is shocking how much I didn't enjoy it this time around. It's such an interesting concept, the acting is great, it's technically a very proficient film... but it just wasn't that amazing. I feel so bad, though, because I really thought it was the second best movie from last year :\ Now I just view it as okay, but nowhere near the best. I don't backpedal on The Dark Knight Rises, though. I have seen it probably... 10 or 11 times now? And it is just as amazing each time. God I love that movie <3 I think it honestly might be time to change my Top 10 movies list. I need to add Citizen Kane, Oldboy, Stoker, Black Swan, and now The Dark Knight Rises. It also worries me, though, that my Top 10 is seeming to be getting more modern... and I don't want it to send the wrong message to people reading the list. A lot of elitists out there will scoff at it and say something about how I don't watch enough of the "classics." I know I shouldn't care about what people think, but I do sort of... Hard to explain :\ So yeah, The Dark Knight Rises... I know it's already been said many times, but that movie is amazing and perfect in every way (except a single death scene frame that I perceive as one of the most awkward death scenes ever... but it's seriously one or two frames, so that's hardly anything to take points off for A lot of my friends say TDKR was slow and not as good as The Dark Knight... but I disagree. I think it's perhaps a little slow, but never to the point where I want it to just end. It's done really well, and all the slow points have purpose. It might not be remembered like The Dark Knight, but I will always hold it close to my heart as -my- favorite Best of 2013 so far: 1. Stoker. Hands-down one of the most brilliant films I've seen. It's going to take a miracle to top it this year. 2. The Great Gatsby. Beautiful film. That's all I can say. 3. Pain & Gain. Seriously, a Michael Bay film in my Top 3, but it's a genuinely great movie. It just... makes me feel happy when I watch it. It's amazing. I have a lot of qualms with the portrayal of women in it, but the men are portrayed equally as terribly, so I think it's deliberate. Great movie Honorable Mentions: Star Trek Into Darkness: AHHHHHH! Love this one, too. ...that's it! Iron Man 3 will be going down as the biggest disappointment I've had at the movies since saw 3d. It's not quite on the level of magnitude as saw 3d, but Iron Man 3 was certainly no slouch in the, "They just ****ed up everything" department. Dear God. Don't get me started... You know, while I considered it that way after my first viewing, I actually loved it a lot more in the second viewing. I was looking at it wrong the whole time. The whole time, I couldn't get the idea out of my head that it was trying to be the hip and updated version of The Prestige (a masterpiece in every regard, by the way). It ended up disappointing me greatly because of this. But the second time I watched it, now that I knew what to expect and what kind of approach it takes to "magic", I threw all my disappointments aside and conceded that it's completely unfair to compare it to The Prestige, because the two movies couldn't be further from each other in terms of themes, magic tricks, and everything... the sole connection between them is that they have magic as a part of the plot, and that's where the comparisons end. I don't usually tell people to give things a second chance, but I think I will recommend you try it again with the idea that it's not trying to be The Prestige at all. You may enjoy it more
YES. FINALLY. Someone else who agrees with me! Iron Man 3 was my biggest disappointment of the year. Hell, it was my biggest movie disappointment I've seen in a while. In other news, can't flippin' wait for Man of Steel, and I usually can't stand Superman.
just seen "the sessions" 2012 movie seen "The Sessions" tonight, a true story with Helen Hunt, William H Macy and the girl from Falling Skies etc. about his life and being paralyzed from polio and getting a professional sex surrogate to learn and have sex "hunt" his therapist and talking to his priest "macy" about it. a good funny, interesting, happy and sad movie about life! Helen Hunt was up for best supporting actress in this movie.
I could be wrong, as I've never seen either this or Diving Bell and the Butterfly, but that sounds like a slightly more sexual and perhaps lighter take on the subject matter of Diving Bell and the Butterfly?
the sessions never heard of or seen those 2 movies. which is better? yes its a lighter funny take on the subject. some helen hunt full nude scenes and not much else. funny to see the real guy in the beginning and how he originally got around by himself but what a smart guy and amazing spirit, as i don't think i could live my life out that way.
Haha, oh no... Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a single film. I believe it won Best Foreign Film at the 2008 Academy Awards.
QT won't do it. He talked about it YEARS ago, but when asked about it not that long ago he basically said he was no longer interested in it, he'd moved on. He's like a kid that gets a new toy. The old one might be as good, maybe better, but something new always seems better. Then don't watch it? I think the KB movies to be some of his best films, and if he DID make a follow up, I sure as hell would be first in line to see it. Ugh. I love foreign films, and I love cinema that is out there. Diving Bell was the biggest pile of garbage I've ever seen. The first chunk of the movie was a POV of him being "locked in" which did nothing other than irritate the viewer. It was trying to be new and different and it was more annoying than the shaky cameras in Blair Witch. Outside of that, they mangled the story that this was based off of and there were quite a few different events that didn't happen the way the movie portrayed them. But on top of this, on top of everything - The guy who we were supposed to feel compassion for because he was unable to move or do anything was a gigantic twat. He was greedy, arrogant and rude. He had zero redeeming qualities at all throughout the film and apparently the person in real life was the same. Why do I want to be engaged in the woe is me story of a person who was a greedy, worthless human being. And even if at the end of it all he had a huge turn around (spoiler: he didn't really) he was still a twat for the majority of his life. I also compare it to a brilliant film called 400 Blows which was the story of a rebellious kid who was a bit of a jerk, but it was handled a million times better than this was, and regardless of it not being based off of a real event, it still handled the situation in a way that just proves Diving Bell is crap. And honestly, the only POV I want to see for that long is from something that isn't family friendly to discuss. Looper was nicely shot, but it was a stupid story that made no sense. IT had some good moments, but when all was said and done it honestly doesn't hold up to even the smallest bit of scrutiny, and to top that it was advertised as one thing and then ended up something totally different. There was some awesome potential to really dig into so many aspects of the "business", but it was barely touched on. A good movie that is different but has some themes that I think are not terribly dissimilar is Memento. That movie is one I could watch endlessly and still enjoy. Honestly, I believe that's Nolan's best film, and everything outside of that was crap, which is why I'm quoting your post. Now, Batman Begins was okay, but just okay. It was forgettable and tried way too damn hard to be moody. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't even remotely in my top 500 films. The more I watch it, the less I like it. TDK was only good because of The Joker, the plot holes in that one were big enough to drive a planet through. And TDK:Rises was even worse! And as if we needed another character with a moronic affectation to his voice. The Batman voice that Bale did was stupid enough on its own, so to make Bane sound like he did was just downright dumb. And again, plot holes like nobody's business. I will never understand the overwhelming praise for these movies. They're crap in comparison to SO many films, and the fact that they are so high on the 250 list is a huge slap in the face to movies that are ACTUALLY good. How any of the batman movies can be considered better than Pulp Fiction, 12 Angry Men, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Ikiru, Memento, Apocalypse Now, Terminator 2, Spirited Away, Dr. Strangelove, Paths of Glory and crap I could go on and on. And on and on. Don't even get me started on the pile of crap that is Inception. And I LOVE Leonardo and Ellen Page. But they couldn't make the movie worth seeing. Now, do I think the Batman movies or Inception deserve anything less than a 6? No, they're all very well made... but they are not worthy of the praise they've received. I know that reviews are considered nothing more than opinion, but not here. Not now, not with this. Want to see good movies? I thought so. Look here for my rated IMDB movies. Now I doubt anyone will agree with everything, but this is a list that is empirically awesome and no one can disagree with that (yes, I know I totally contradicted myself ) http://www.imdb.com/user/ur1140905/ratings?start=1&view=detail&sort=your_ratings:desc&defaults=1&my_ratings=restrict And MC - You realize how much credibility you've lost listing Pain and Gain? You do get some back for listing Oldboy, Citizen Kane (though it almost seems this is a requirement for everyone to love along with It's A Wonderful Life and Casablanca) and even Black Swan (Aronofsky has my respect after that, The Wrestler, Requiem and Pi, though I won't even talk about the crap that was The Fountain). Look at my list. Watch some of the films. My BIGGEST recommendations for you, and I know you may not want to listen to me after dissing you... but I urge you to because....... just because. Here's what you HAVE to watch: Yojimbo The Hustler 12 Angry Men The Great Dictator and/or Modern Times The Seventh Seal The Killing Apocalypse Now Trainspotting (this IS weird, it's a movie about heroin addiction) To Kill a Mockingbird Magnolia (another slightly strange and long film) M (1931) The Bridge on the River Kwai Cool Hand Luke Anatomy of a Murder The French Connection One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest The 400 Blows Honorable Mentions because I think they might be a little bit less universal, but they are brilliant films: Night of the Hunter The Hidden Fortress (excellent and a great way to see how Star Wars was born) All About Eve I've got more, but y'all need NEED NEED to get your butts in gear and actually watch movies that are awesome and make movies what they are. And yes, I will sound all old and whatever like by saying that I honestly don't believe that the last 30 years of movies can't hold a candle to movies of the decades before that. Anything Charlie Chaplin > ANY movie Nolan, Fincher (who is one of my favorite directors of all time save for Panic Room, Benjamin Button and something else) and oodles more I can't think of right now. Oh, on another note - Oz: The Great and Powerful was CRAAAAAAAAP. What a terrible way to treat the Wizard of Oz universe. Kunis couldn't have been a worse fit for the role, but Franco takes the award for a crappy, crappy, crappy, crappy garbage role. The only redeeming factor to the movie was Joey King who played the China Girl. Rami was a terrible choice for the director, and he really needs to stop making commercial films. Near the end when he did his trademark evil creature running toward the camera super fast thing, I just shook my head it was so stupid. Wrong director, wrong writer and wrong movie. The crappy Wizard of Oz spinoffs were leagues better than this garbage pile of a film. Though my kids loved it. Sadly. For each awesome movie they like (Hugo, Little Shop of Horrors, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Basic Instinct ) they have to ruin it with crap like that and their garbage kids films.
^^^ tldr ^^^ I'm interested to hear your "plot holes" in TDK. I know there's a ton of them in TDKR, but I can't seem to remember any in TDK.
