Well really now, you should be ashamed of yourself for even thinking it could be good. The first had so much potential, it could have been really fun but they found a way to make fast action look insanely boring. The dialogue could have been tongue in cheek, but instead it was simply lame and there was no wit to it. So much squandered potential. On a happier note, snuck in TWO movies tonight. Guillermo Del Toro's first film Cronos, which was excellent. Some fairly creepy parts (Kenny, if you watch it do it with your mom so you can get snuggles . Sorry, couldn't resist!) but truly fantastic to see what he did on a small budget with his first film. Perlman is excellent in it, and it blends in the dark humor perfectly. The criterion blu had a short of his that was freaking hilarious, titled Geometria it's a horror story about a poor boy who doesn't want to take his geometry test. Epic awesomeness follows. The next was another movie quickly seated in my top films straight away. Stagecoach by John ford. Another blind buy from my criterion haul and one damn fine movie. It would be considered an excellent western if it came out today, which makes the fact that its 74 years old that much more amazing. It's the movie that propelled John Wayne into stardom and there's a clear reason why after you watch the film. It takes all the silly, cliche western tropes and makes them all fresh, even now.
I got it for free, so no skin off my nose. But damn... It was so... "You might want to duck" *turns, looks* "Oh, sh**" *ducks* ...lame. That and the first half of the movie made me wonder if it was amateur-made... I just feel like they only got together because they're the "big stars". Anyways, looking for some good sci-fi movies. Something no more than a few years old that has ROBOTS and COOL STUFF and stuff. Nothing specific (not even robots) but just sci-fi-ey. Any good suggestions? (something iRobot- and Aliens- esque, but not as heavy as Avatar)
So damn true. It looked like it could have been the perfect throwback to classic 80s and 90s action movies. Even with intentionally cheesy dialogue it would have been good, instead we get unintentionally crappy dialogue that suggests these actors are taking themselves way too seriously. A true parody would have been better, you can't just make Commando in 2013 the same way they did in the 80s and expect it to work.
Oh hoggy. No, just... No. Metropolis, sort of, Blade Runner (even though I'll never love it due to the crazy deviation it made from the amazing book), 2001, Terminator 1/2, Serenity, Gattica, Matrix (1 and one ONLY), Close Encounters, Alien or Aliens, the cheesy but scary as hell Event Horizion, The Abyss or Prometheus. Seriously, separated at birth you and I were. What are some of your favorite movies? No. No. Just.... No. It was trying to be too serious. Had it taken its subject matter with lightness and levity, it could have been excellent. I'm trying to think of some films of that genre that did handle this properly, but I can't think of any titles now.
Tough call. I like different movies for different reasons. I actually just wrote a post and deleted it. It's so hard to pick favourites, much easier just to list a load of movies, so here you go: Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas The Fearless Vampire Killers Aliens Repo: The Genetic Opera Poltergeist Apocalypse Now Scarface Misery Time Bandits Back to the Future It's a Wonderful Life Dr Strangelove Sin City The Exorcist Kung Fu Hustle The Lost Boys This Is Spinal Tap A Nightmare On Elm Street The Usual Suspects Tremors A Scanner Darkly Trainspotting Dog Soldiers Delicatessen Cube Snatch The Thing House of 1000 Corpses La Haine Pulp Fiction Requiem for a Dream Ghostbusters Fight Club Pirates of the Caribbean Lost in Translation Forrest Gump Scream The Dark Knight ...then a load of kiddie stuff, mostly due to childhood memories. Disney movies, The BFG, An Americal Tail, etc. I've probably left out a ton of great movies, but that's life.
The first one took itself too seriously, but the second one didn't, in my opinion, lots of jokes in that one. I guess I can see where you're coming from, though.
They should have been good because of the cast, but it's the fact it has that cast and failed that makes it so depressing.
I watched Django Unchained last night, and all I have to say is 'Wow'. Just 'Wow'. Christopher Waltz is absolutely amazing as Dr. Shultz. He has this charm about him in the movie that makes him likeable immediately from the start. His Oscar was very, very well deserved. Foxx was admirable in his performance also, with his action sequences and gun battles enthralling and exhilarating. Having only seen one of Tarentino's film previously (Pulp Fiction), you could immediately spot the quintessential elements of Pulp Fiction that were in Django. The brilliant dialogue, the likeable characters, the music, the comedic moments in non-comedic situations (the bag over the head? ROFL!) and the action sequences are amazing. Will definitely be watching Resovoir Dogs, Kill Bill, Inglorious Basterds and Jackie Brown in the near future. Tarentino is a genius. Honestly, I'd say this is the best film of 2012. Better than Argo, and better than the DKR. So ninjackid, watch it. FUGGIN NOW!!
I don't think anything else quite matches up to Pulp Fiction. Reservoir Dogs is good, but apart from those two Tarantino has sorta been on a downhill path... Kill Bill being slightly above average, Inglourious Basterds being average and Death Proof being slightly below average. I hope Django Unchained is a return to form.
