This is true, complete all the old lady's quests and she'll ask you to kill the giadrome that's been tormenting the village. I had upgraded to a one hand snake bite by then and took it down fairly easily. He only got to escape one zone before I caught him. I had also upgraded my leather armor to the 4 def though which is helpful. Make sure to talk to all the villages cause at a csertain point they give you enough spheres to upgrade all your armor for basically free. And use the farm as well, I didn't know that at first and now I'm farming like crazy ;)

Hmmm, thanks, I'll mess around with the hammer some more. I've played some MH Tri, so I kinda have an idea of weapon strengths and balance. I just wondered if any weapons really shine or fail using touch controls, because I did ok with the GS in Tri, but having a hard time in this. I'm early on tho so using weak starter equipment.

Hammer is generally considered one of the best weapons if not the best (there aren't really any best weapon classes). I assume you having trouble might be from adjusting to different control types for a similar type of game. Maybe throwing you off. I took a couple weapons that seemed okay for me to use and experimented for a couple hours when I started. Actually DS was the best weapon for me movement wise but I ended up not picking them because of the downsides.

DS demon mode with evade +2 man, dodging monster attack feels soooo good.

I used to be a SnS man through and through back in MHTri, but in this I just couldn't get the rhythm right. I tried the dual swords and they felt so much better. I killed a giadrome (or whatever the first boss you fight is- looks like a blue great jaggi) really easily on my first try which was nice, except I have to get used to dodging more.
What are the downsides of the DS? Obviously the demon mode requires stamina, and you can't block, and you can't roll out of a combo-finisher, but other than that what's so bad about them?

Anyone willing to post a newbie ranking of the weapon pros and cons? So far I've tried the bow lance (machine gun knife), and hunting bow, and it feels range weapons are for advanced players? Which weapon should I start with to get a visceral monster smashing going not having a clue how MH works?

    DS Pros:
    - Absolutely devastating attack speed, coupling with elements, you dish out ridiculous damage.
    - Demon mode gives dodges with more invincibility frames and less recovery time (no need to roll all the way on the ground)
    - Demon mode combo has ESP (does not bounce on monsters)
    - Insanely high damage if you get to 2-3 demon combo on a monster (possible through traps/paralyze)

    DS Cons:
    - As sharpness decrease per hit, your fast attack speed means your blade will dull much quicker.
    - Very short range which means it is hard for you to cut or damage bodily parts of tall monsters (Diablos, etc...)
    - No shield. While you can dodge most attacks in the game, block can be useful against things like roar or wind attack.
    - Stamina reliant: while demon mode gives you superb attack power, it drains your stamina rapidly, giving less stamina for dodging/running. However this can be circumvented by making Mega/Power juice which prevents stamina loss for a period of time.

As far as newbie weapons go, my personal ranking would be:

Tier 1: Hammer, Sword and Shield, Lance
Tier 2: Dual Sword, Gunlance, Longsword, Bow*
    Tier 3: Hunting Horn, Greatsword
    Tier 4: Light/Heavy Bowgun*

For ranged weapons, the hardest part is not about using them properly, but knowing what each bullet/arrow coating does, and more importantly how to craft them on the moves as you often will run out of ammo during a fight. If you need to know the pros and cons of a certain weapon, ask em here and I'll list out the pros and cons :)

I'm really hoping for MH3/Tri on iPad now, mostly because I miss my Swordaxe-thing. :( Forgot how easy the DS was to use, though.

There was a damn vespoid around and I couldn't take a clean screenshot.

Those stupid bugs are annoying as hell, even after completing a mission.

Great word Varo! I hate those bugs the most of any enemy in the game. Often I try to heal and they come up and keep hitting me while I attempt to use items. Annoying.

As for DS, I feel like they'd be an advanced weapon tier. Despite imo being the easiest to use weapon in the game and incredibly powerful, their drawbacks are strong. Like listed, basically it's heavily reliant on items. You need to be stocked to counteract its dulling / stamina usage. Which I think is not beginner friendly. So it's deceiving that it's easy to use because you'll need to have items on hand for the longer fights.

Hey guys long story short, I really want this game but just one thing is holding me back - how good is the frame rate? Knowing it's a large app makes me wonder. I have an iPod Touch 5g 32GB if that helps. Please answer because I'll get the game when I receive good news that the FPS is good.

Awesome thanks, I tried out the Great Sword still not my style but it got the job doing the grandma quests. I'll try out the sword and shield and maybe the dual swords next. There is seriously no hand holding in this game, I could not for the life of me figure out how to turn in a quest but assumed it would be back at camp. Wandered a bit, slept in the hut, then lo and behold one of the chests is a quest turn in point. Weird but okay it works. :D

Just for that Congalala I needed 2 extra whetstones while using an upgraded set of Giaprey duals. I died once though. The extra damage he deals when enraged is ridiculous. He caught me by surprise with the first hit of his slash, slash, slash combo and I "only" had a little more than half the normal health.

Quite a nasty monster (in more ways than one).

It's good, don't worry. One of the best ports out there, if not the best.

So the frame rate is good? I'm just confirming because I wouldn't want to waste $18.

Congala damages you the most when he hits you with his claws or body slams, everything else does very miniscule damage. The triple wipe alone can 80% someone.

I have a iPT5G 64GB that's jailbroken (lost a lot of ram in the process) and MHFU is one of the smoothest games on my ipod. I think it only crashed once in all 78 hours I've played. I think I noticed a frame rate drop a couple times but other than that, it plays flawlessly. Tbh, it's large but not that large in size. Earlier I was complimenting how this gigantic.. 1000+ hour game only fits in 1.1 GB. It has so many beautiful landscapes (night and day), many varieties of monsters, deep gameplay, etc. If you get bored you could even strip yourself bare, grab a new weapon and start over with your same character. Or make a new one.
