I think, what I like most about MH is the fact, that there's nearly no magic in the game. Everything is sort of natural, even the beasts and their abilities. Ok, there's talking cats and alchemy, but besides that, everything is based on your skill and tactical thinking. No chance to pull out a mighty fireball spell and roast enemies within seconds. No stupid character classes. Just blademasters and archers or gunners. LS has too much advantages to ignore it. And if you know how to fill your spirit gauge quicky, you're dishing out some nice damage. I kill hermitaurs and ceanataurs with a LS quicker than with a hammer. But maybe only because I can handle the LS better than the hammer.
I'm not saying the 'go into another area and back again' tigrex strategy(?) is cheating, but it is definitely exploiting the game in a way that shouldn't be exploited. Monsters use tricks to get the better of you, that's for sure. It's only fair that you do the same. I consider abusing rolling/dodging or backslashes and whatnot 'fair' as they require skill to pull off, however, exploiting the game is not. Repeatedly getting tigrex stuck in a wall? That wall was out there for a reason, fair play. Being a backslash master? Well done, you're a beast. Using sonic bombs to get the edge on a monster? Wise decision. Exploiting the game (eg getting diablos stuck on a ledge, cheating, exploiting the separation of areas to get a cheap tigrex kill)? No. Go away. You're ruining the satisfaction of winning a 'fair' fight for yourself.
On a different note: Do you guys use the spirit combo often? I try to use it as soon as I can and, admittedly, often get a bit greedy Is it better to keep the damage bonus of a full spirit gauge or to deal lots of damage with the combo?
I think this depends on the situation. But using the damage bonus and pulling off the spirit combo just before it drains down might be the best use sometimes. This is what Kanade says: Red glow on the spirit gauge offers the highest boost to the Long Sword and what makes it the one of the best DPSing weapon in the game. Once you've obtained Red glow you have 1 minute to make full use of it. Connecting with a spirit finisher will reset the counter so it is possible to maintain the red glow for a whole quest. Mentality often gets the best of users and greed sets in resulting in many LSers spamming the spirit attacks to attempt to maintain the red glow's power, often getting hit by the monster during the spirit combos or tripping and disrupting allies. A rule of thumb I always follow is "better to lose the red glow by evading than to lose it by getting hit." And again, why shouldn't someone use this strategy I explained when he has real trouble with the Tigrex? I neither believe that you're ruining all fun you have with MH. And in MH, nearly all fights are unfair from the beginning. The monsters are bigger, better, badder with more damage potential and tons of other nasty stuff and tricks. It's o.k., as long as you win. Winning is, what counts in the end. Sure, I prefer a fight without exploits, but to quickly farm Tigrex a few times, this strategy works best. You can still beat him in an "honorable" fight another time.
To use an ancient proverb (probably legit): It is not the destination that counts, but the journey...
Haha, it's all o.k., mate. I gladly agree to disagree. But I understand where you are coming from, what you're saying. MH is a game about skilll and you should win using skill, not dirty exploits. Still, you know, humans are very creative in working around certain things. I love to play games not how the devs want me to play them or supposed to play them, I love to play them sometimes in a "let's try what can I do" or "what's possible"-style. That's much fun, too. And that is exactly what I loved about The Stanley Parable or this iOS game with a ball and a road you follow (forgot the name, sorry). These games reward you for being creative, for going different ways.
Hammer KO's monsters giving you a lot of time to deal damage while you'd have to find a good opening to use your spirit gauge. Terra Shogun Hammer Heroics I have a hard time believing this one Ukanlos Heroics
Mazereon was basing it on numbers. Like i said, GS will always hit for more damage on each hit, but doesnt hit as often as LS does. GS is widely considered to be very effective against Tigrex, Plesioth, Rathalos or Rathian, but i've only seen the fastest times done by LS. GS is close, but always third after LS, with Hammers always doing things a little bit faster.
^ True so far! What Kanade from the MH Forums says: "Red glow on the spirit gauge offers the highest boost to the Long Sword and what makes it the one of the best DPSing weapon in the game." Sure, it makes less damage in a single hit as a GS, for example, but you can land 3 hits in a second. The hammer is still the best in damage output and combo potential. Oh, and btw., nobody should dismiss the Hunting Horn as a weak weapon. Sure, it's great to buff other players when hunting together, but by looking at the Ancient Fatalis Lute (great design, btw.), which has the following stats: Attack: 1,352 Attribute: Dragon 380 Affinity 0% Bonus Defense +8 and if you also consider the half-dozen of high-class buffs, it's quite a nice weapon. The Fatalis Menace Lute has even more raw power but lacks in elemental power: Attack: 1,456 Attribute: Dragon 320 I want these one day! But the materials.... ack, ack...
Is it normal for me to be 127+ hours into this game and I'm still no where near great equip? Besides my Devil Slicer, I'm still rocking lowbie Ceanataur Armor and I can't get Union Ore to upgrade my Hammer for my first +1k weapon....
It only depends on what quests you are doing: until you get to high rank quests (guild or elder) you won't get the high rank materials required for these equips. I'm almost 140h in the game and I'm exactly where you are: upgrading my low-rank armor set, trying to find the best equips I can get from low-rank quests. To get to high-rank quests you either need to clear the urgent quests from the elder or to get to HR4 from guild quests.
I don't think you can be going through this game too slow. You could be going too fast but hunting takes time. Good equips don't just drop from the sky
LOL, nice one! Did you try Tigrex with the strategy? And: if you can kill a Rathian, you should be able to kill a Tigrex.
Ok, cool. Thanks cooltea and l.lawliet! "And: if you can kill a Rathian, you should be able to kill a Tigrex." -this made me think of that quote from the movie "Dodgeball" "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball."
LOL .............. I will... one day... when I get a new pair of pants And what Davis said: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZXHsNqkDI4 That's you throwing the wrench at me.
