Thanks again for the info! Actually, the troublesome pair quest is quite comfortable with me, so I'll stick with that. I think I will verify that shock trap glitch next week, unless someone verify it first. And the power seed....I'll try that next week too.

That was one-time, and that was caused by a glitch from the english patch on MHP2G back on the PSP iirc, which has been fixed. Or maybe that was from MHP3, cant really remember exact details.

I so miss the block-and-counter move for lances, and i miss the switch axes. I hope eventually a 3rd gen MH title will be ported into iOS too.

So I finally gave this game another try and after sinking about 6 hours in, I see the allure of it all. I am about 15 hours in now and I decided to try Kut-Ku and destroyed it and all of its training missions.

I am not having trouble with the monsters. It doesn't matter the weapon, it just matters learning its attack patterns. What I don't get - and the wiki just aren't making things clearer for me:

    1. The point of Chefs and how they and their skills work.
    2. How equipment skills and skill trees work

I have the pink named flower outfit for gathering and the first set of battle / gunner gear that I am rocking with a hammer and light bowgun.

I just loaded them up the bladesmith ones with attack gems and wait for an opportunity to smash things. But I can already see that buffs are going to be needed after 2 star quest.

I would think you will enjoy it, for me the closest game to monster hunter is demons/darksouls even though they are very different. But it's the similarities that make em great. Monster hunter is less of a quest but both games have a great combination of action physics and challenging battles.

Both games also require you to pay attention to things as information is provided discretely not rammed down your throat.

The game can be done solo I have done, it's more challenging but doo-able and enjoyable plus the touch controls are surprisingly good.

I agree lance block counter was an awesome addition, as was the shield bash. Switch axes won me over, what a tool. I was not so keen on gunlance third strike bash though.

I played mh4 briefly recently and the new pole and sword weapons are great additions to the weapons rack.

    I got this one guys.

    Ok #1, the Felyne chefs.
Basically, once you have them you will be able to choose 2 items from an increasingly big list of food items. The number of felyne chefs you have in your kitchen will determine which food items/how many food items are available, but basically each food item falls into one of the following categories: Meat, Fish, Drink, Veggie, Fruit, Bran, Dairy. Actual food combinations don't matter, as long as 2 given food items are in the same category they can be used interchangeably. Here are the recipes you can make, given your number of felyne chefs:
    http://monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/MHFU:_Food_Recipes
You can get more felyne chefs by advancing in the elder quests. When you get to 6* quests you should unlock the full 5 felyne staff.
Now for the stars and whim skills. Basically, each chef has a random chance of giving you a special skill that will help you in your next quest. These are called kitchen skills or felyne whim skills, and when you view a cats info three possible whim skills will be displayed below a list of food categories with some stars next to them. (this might be wrong) but what this means is that when you cook using one of the food categories displayed (ie. meat) there is a chance (more stars = higher chance) of activating one of the three whim skills. The skills themselves can be found here:
    http://monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Felyne_Whim_Skills
    There. That should cover #1.

#2, equipment and skill trees. By this I assume you are referring to armor skills. So these are special attributes granted by a combination of equipment and decorations. The most important thing to understand about these skills is that every point is not important. The system utilizes a system of skill point thresholds, above or below which a certain skill or status is applied. The thresholds are 10, 15, and 20. Not every skill has 3 thresholds; some may only use 10 and 15, or just 15, it varies by the skill. But the point is, that even if you have 9 pts of a certain skill, it will not be activated AT ALL, just as if you had 0 pts, or -9 pts. but anyway, each skill has different thresholds for different effects. And it is also very possible to get negative effects if you have enough negative pts in a certain skill. Here's a list of all skills and their effects across certain thresholds:
    http://monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Armor_Skill_List_(MHFU)
Knowing this, you can use decorations to adjust the skills you have active. Have armor with -10 pts in something? apply a single gem that will add one or two pts in that skill to neutralize the negative effect. Have armor with +8 in a certain area? add a gem to get the effect. You are free to mix and match armor pieces, but be advised that each piece of an armor set often gives a lot of the same points into certain skills, and it may be tough to meet threshold requirements if you have a crazy patchwork armor set.

    There. I'm done.

What i miss about gunlances in p3 are the buffs it received in its damage formula. Gunlances are top-tier in MHP3. Lances were weaker, and they changed it so that it was more block oriented rather than dodge oriented as it is in MHFU/MHP2G.

Switch Axes are awesome. High tier damage output, awesome weapon transform animations, has a "special attack" similar to gunlance's wyvern fire, has infinite combos that are fairly fast, and being stationary while doing the combo is a godsend, and it doesnt interrupt allies in multiplayer because of the strict but accurate hitbox.

Thanks for the feedback (and to everyone else who responded as well). Looks like I'll be picking it up.

That being said, if you have any point-form tips, something you wished you'd known when you started, feel free to post them. I'm listening :)

Anytime. You're early on now, and you'll probably hit some difficulty spikes named Khezu and Tigrex (in that order), but remember that this game is incredibly rewarding. If you take the time to master all the mechanics, it's a ton of fun, and it has insane replay value. I'm still on the low rank quests (first 6*s), and I'm 92 hours in.

    - you WILL have to use different weapons throughout the game
    - if you're getting killed, you have wrong weapon & armor set or haven't learned how to beat the monster
    - monsters have breakable parts which raise a chance for rare drops
    - always check for possible upgrades for weapon & armor (they unlock with drops)
    - utilize your farm
    - eat before quests
    - never forget whetstones, potions, steaks or hot / cold drinks
    - GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND AND FLASH BOMBS ARE NOT CHEATING

Awww, I'm flattered... but yeah feel free. The more attention this game gets the more hope there will be to get more ports I suppose.

All of these are accurate. While I've been able to avoid using any ranged weapon besides a bow, it is definitely necessary to have a ranged set. Learned that the hard way fighting Basarios and Gravios. Though I did kill Basarios with an Eager Cleaver...

^here is the set of walkthroughs I've been using for each monster, the guy is really good at explaining how to kill each one. Except in the later videos where he just goes off on wild tangents with his commentary.

    These are wrong.

    1. I know a few people who started out with me who are purists (one is pure DS user, one uses LS only, and one GLs only) and they defeat each monster on their own. Personally, the only thing i cant kill with a specific weapon, is Lao Shan Lung with an SnS. I can repel, but couldnt kill.

This can be added to the guide, but it has to be re-worded to something like: Using different weapon types may make specific fights easier. AND using different weapon types can help break or cut different monster parts, which can improve chances at finding specific materials.

    2. In the second one, the part i highlighted red is all sorts of wrong. Dont blame your weapon or armor if you dont know how to defeat the monster.

Sure a different weapon class may make the fight easier, but using a weapon class that has disadvantages against certain monsters, like Lances VS Kirin for example, doesnt mean using Lances against Kirin is impossible. It's not the Lances fault that you cant defeat a Kirin with it, but Kirin fights are a lot easier with SnS, GS and Bowguns.

Same with armors. Is it really the armor's fault that you are getting hit?

Higher defense means upgrading more which can get expensive early on (between upgrade mats and the costs), and having the right resistances may mean less damage taken. They will make fights a little bit easier, BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE.

See how your last sentence contradicts the part i highlighted? Having a ranged set makes the fights more straightforward and may be easier, but not necessary.

Sorry guys, but im always ticked off when someone says using certain weapon types against certain monsters is wrong. Just because one person hasnt learned the right mechanics to fighting specific monsters yet doesnt mean his current weapon class of choice is at fault.

Is there any way to transfer saves from the iPad version to the iPhone version?
