Tutorials? Monster Hunter? LOL no no no. There are no tutorials in Monster Hunter. As I stated previously, there is NO hand holding in these games. This is why it's hard for people to grasp them. We live in an age where endless runners have tutorials!!! Now, Monster Hunter, which is one of the most complex, deep, overly-complicated games I've ever played, it's almost laughable to think they don't really tell you anything about how to play it! Seriously! I bought three Monster Hunter games before I started to really understand it. It wasn't until I got to play online, with voice chat, that I really started to understand how it all works. On top of that, even after spending hundreds of hours in these games, there is still a mega-ton amount of things in this game I know nothing about, or have barley scratched the surface of.

To be honest, if you're new to the series, it won't matter that it's in Japanese. Even if you can read the language, its going to take a looooooong time to get a grasp on this beast of a game! Now if all of this sounds discouraging, don't be a pussy about it! This game is VERY rewarding once you get the hang of it. Why else would we invest hundreds of hours into it? #

Buy a 3DS instead. Way better game library, and it has Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, which is AWESOME on 3DS. On top of that, the game saves swap back and forth between WiiU version (which is online) and the 3DS version.

Also, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is coming very soon to a 3DS near you........

3DS is nice but i'm sticking to my iPhone no offense. I can do much work on this device.
On topic, yep this game is quite addicting and very rewarding once you get the hang of it. And it is very complex

Thanks for the tips guys. I got the game and the patch working! I'm positive it's only a Jailbreak thing so I don't think anyone with a stock phone will get it to work.. sorry.

Anyhow, any tips for beginners? What do I do when my weapons get blunt? I saw an item that sharpens it but I was hoping there's an easier and cheaper way to fix weapons. Since all the villagers speak Japanese (lol) I have no idea who to go to for what. I only saw an item seller and equipment seller.

Also for cats, I got the free one to work in the kitchen but that's different that the cat sidekick that goes into battle with you?

And I just wanted to make sure, staying out too long / fighting too much will make your stamina disappear, correct? And it seems like finding stuff is just searching on your own? The game doesn't seem to give much hints on where to find things besides tell you the general area.

Thanks for the help - signed MH Newbie. Damn I'm gonna have hell playing this inbetween Record of Agarest War.

Love this post! Like I said, they don't tell you how to play this game LOL!! Different weapons degrade at different rates. You need a wet stone to sharpen them back up. You can either buy them, or combine items to make them. In the early quests, you might find them in the item box, but you should carry them with you most of the time, as well as healing potions, and stamina recovery items.

I remember being a newbie at Monster Hunter! Sooooooooo overwhelming lol!!

All weapons fix themselves automatically when you get back to town. While in a hunt though, you'll need whetstones. The blue box on the camp (your starting point) will have at least one set of 3 mini whetstones in low rank/elder quests.

From the right of the shops: Equips seller (sells starter items (they are crappy), but they dont need materials to make), Blacksmith (this is where you'll be spending most of your time), Items seller (sells various items/materials).

Then near the top-left exit are the Elder (she gives you your starting quests), and the Felyne Elder Nekoht (she's the one at the left side of the elder, gives you quests when you've completed all urgent quests from the elder).

The building to the north is the guild hall. Inside you will find 3 ladies behind the counter, each one starting from the one closest to the door offer low rank, high rank and G-rank quests. The one further up is the item seller. The one on the far right is the treasure hunt quests guy. Treasure hunting only give pokke points and no materials or equips, so i never bothered with this one.

I never like taking cats into battle with me, but i believe you can assign the cats in your kitchen to go with you on the board on the rightmost part of the kitchen.

Correct. Some items like energy drink will prevent your stamina from depleting for a certain time. To increase your stamina total, you can consume food like rations (free from the blue box), or from the food your kitchen cats cook for you (from the leftside board in the kitchen).

There are usually more obvious background elements like a lone plant, or some fruit or a crack in the wall, or some mushrooms, etc. They are usually forage points.

The more you play, the more you'll familiarize yourself with the forage points. ;)

Played too much MH from 4 to 5 years ago, i'd be happy to help out if there's any questions regarding MH. I remember the time i first started out i needed help too... ;)

But... There ARE tutorials in the game. Well, in this version in Japanese, but there are. The guy from Dynamic Hunting is the one who teaches you how to play the game through different short missions.

Thanks Squablo and Exact-Psience MH Masters! Those were actually all great comments. They helped a lot. I actually browsed through the faq and Gamefaqs and it was pretty helpful. Got some other good basic tips :)

Exact-P, you mentioned items to increase your stamina max, but they aren't permanent right?

I'm still getting a feel for controls and in the beginning I have only gotten meat and herbs from killing and collecting. Can't wait to make my first item from a monster! Looks like when you're doing the elder missions, most of the stuff in the village is locked so I can't really try them out yet. But this game feels gigantic already!

Oh guys how do you reload the gun lance? I assume it uses the infinite bullets in the inventory called (normal S Lv1) but then my bullets are showing red and the reload button doesn't do anything anymore.

I tried out the great sword which I heard was a favorite but I got destroyed using it on my first time lol.

Well those items are in the inventory but it says I'm empty. Not exactly sure what I'm doing wrong.

Anyhow I'm trying different weapons and I can't find anything good for a beginner. I'd say the sword and shield is easiest but I don't want to stick with the standard weapon. I've tried about 5 other weapons and they're all difficult for me. I guess you could say they're pretty slow in action? I thought long sword might be a good inbetween as it is a bit faster but the delay between swings and no block meant I was fighting one enemy for 10 minutes in Lvl 1 rolling back and fourth trying to hit him  I'm totally a noob.

For LS, use rolls to cancel the final swings. and also, familiarise yourself with the infinite combo as well. Since LS is a full offense, zero defense weapon, you gotta learn how to time ur swings and roll outta the way.

Gunlances dont need ammo in your inventory.

To reload with weapon out: swipe down and hold on the shield button

To reload with weapon sheathed: swipe down and hold on the shield button.

Swiping down is without holding is instablocking, you need to hold the shield button in the down direction to reload.
