Anything that increases attack power. Power seeds, demondrugs, mega demondrugs, attack flute and hh attack buffs.

Ahh, thanks. Not as complicated as I thought. Guess it's just my brain being slow at 4am :D

Btw, you weren't kidding when you said this game drains battery!

Thanks! I don't think I want to ever go near a Tigrex again.. haha. I will wear him proudly.. once I get one more fang..

Shinobi looks far for me still. You have to defeat a Gao to get it started apparently.

Damn I'm still itching to get to HR4. Anyone free to help me tonight?

@Jcho: How you liking the game? Some other basic questions are on the second post of this thread :) Let us know if you have any other questions!

Yeah, I am! Thanks for the tip about the second post Lawliet! One of my biggest drives to play this game is that most of the monsters are dinosaur-like, and there's so few good dinosaur games out there, that this basically counts as one. Which is cool, because good dinosaur games are awesome.

Some proper impressions: It feels like Pokemon + Dark Souls + Minecraft. I'm surprised at how weighty the combat is, and how timing and learning enemies patterns is a huge part of the game, which gives me some great Dark Soul vibes (even though monster hunter came years before). Playing with each weapon feels like a completely different game, which is very cool.

I'm currently taking my sweet time with the tutorial, only on the 4th weapon quest. I want everything to really soak in so i know what I'm doing when I get into the swing of things. Once I finish the weapon quests I'm gonna check out the whole "garden" thing then the gathering hall. I'm gonna check the tavern thread for any other n00bs out there.

    Also, this melts my phone.

    Can a 5 handle this?
    If so, how well?
    Any resl slowdown?
And the game can be conducive for solo play right?

I'm persisting with great sword which I love for everything but hunting big ass monsters! I can't help but feel Like a ranged weapon will be way easier, you seem hugely at risk coming in close to inflict meele damage.

Is this true and should I start trying to get bows, or is there a reason why I should stick it out with great sword (apart from that they look so awesome)

I just don't like ranged weapons. They are boring, especially the bow, running around charging, running, charging... Crossbows are only good in guild quests because one hit from a monster and you are below 40% health.

@To the guy who asked if the game runs smooth on the 5. I'm playing on the 4S and its very smooth.

Greatsword is second only to the hammers in average damage output over time, and actually surpasses hammers against specific monsters (and also dependent on the hunter's playstyle).

Great sword is among the most versatile weapons in the game. It may be slow and clunky to wield early on, but you'll get used to it, and you will reap more benefits than its weaknesses can hinder. High damage, ability to block, good reach for cutting tails or reaching piscine stomachs, and good AOE to get rid of pesky minions.

And one more important thing... Art of Unsheathing. Hands down the best armor skill to have on a GS user. Here's a little write up/quick guide i did 5 years ago on gamefaqs (lol.. just realized it's been that long).

4S here and no problems, and you can finish the game without playing online, but of course playing with other people makes the quests funnier (and easier :D).

So this game is really hard.. I'm having a tough time choosing the right weapon.. I'm using the dual blades but engaging in close combat with the harder monsters is not effective.. The other swords are so clunky and slow and the bows and gun lances are cool but by the time I've got the monster in my sights he rushes me and I can't even get a shot off.. Any tips my friends? I've got over 12 hours of gameplay thus far, I would've imagined being a better monster hunter by now.. Maybe I could join some of you on a quest and see how you operate..

Thinking that your items will defeat it. That's what you are doing wrong. You always mention changing weapons and armor... That's not going to help much. What you need to change is the way you approach this game.

This is not God of War. This is not Devil May Cry. You cant tank a few hits while dishing out your own damage.

In Monster Hunter, when you get hit, there is no benefit. There is no trading damage. There is no tanking.

The main concept you need to understand is avoiding damage. Try not hitting Blangonga and just focus on not getting hit.

Once you know how to avoid damage, you need to figure out how you can deal damage without taking some yourself. If you are using a slow weapon, ONE ATTACK IS ENOUGH. That one attack may either be one GS unsheathe strike, one hammer superpound, one HH superpound.

With other weapons, it's usually just one or two hits from your LS, 1, 2 or 3 hits from your Lance or Gunlance. It can be 2 to 4 hits from an SnS or a DS.

Dont go over those, and you should be safe enough to roll away to safety and look for next opportunities to attack.

The most common opening is WHEN THE MONSTER IS TURNING TWICE. Near the end of this movement, stop attacking and roll to safety. If you keep attacking after he's done turning twice, then you're as good as dead.
