I'm really surprised how many people are getting illegitimate copies. I really do hope they reset everyone's account, even those who won the legitimate copies. It was really unfair to giveaway the game early. Also I'd say to release an update that won't let you connect to the servers unless you have an updated version.
You'd think they would do something about it solely based off revenue loss because of this. With it being an online only game it shouldn't be too hard? Sucks that they get a head start for us too, will make multiplayer harder in the beginning.
You think they have gotten them illegitimately? All I know is that one of them said he isn't allowed to show too much content so I dunno. Maybe GL gave it to them to spread the word before it finally hits the stores? Whatever it is, I fully agree with what you said.
Really only around 4 people got a legitamate copy. People are giving away their iTunes info and the files have been leaked so people are pirating it now. They said people who have illegitimate copies are not allowed to post gameplays, but everyone is doing so. I'd be really surprised if they don't do anything about it.
The pirated ones are somewhat irrelevant as they won't get server access anyway due to them being cracked. The bigger problem are the asshats that leaked out their iTunes accounts (talk about the height of stupidity) and left more than 1000 download it. They are the big problem because strictly speaking they are not illegitimate copies as they were directly downloaded from a legitimate iTunes account. Of course now that the passwords have changed, none of those copies can actually update which makes the necessity of an update before Thursday pretty important. That still leaves the problem of those "legitimate" (though not really legitimate but still legal downloads) copies and their leaderboard positions so ultimately the only real solution is to wipe the leaderboards, everybody's progress and reset the servers on Wednesday. A pretty substantial task on the week of launch so I'm not really sure how this one is going to play out. I've already seen more than enough clans and individuals on the leaderboard to know if it doesn't happen, it will be a very big task to catch up and while the leaderboards are neither here nor there, there is no denying they are a strong element of the competitive nature of any FPS so some steps will definitely be necessary as five days, while not a lot really, is still a long time for a leaderboard on an FPS. On a positive note, they are very aware of what has happened and a plan is being formulated. I'm not sure what options will be viable but something will be done. On the pirated copies that surfaced because of this stupid iTunes password leak, they don't work. The unique app code is already blocked as a precautionary measure despite it not having server access anyway. It will also result in a ban and there will be no going back on it. Obviously enough, I have a very strong anti piracy stance and would under no circumstances condone it. Some are already saying "aw, I just wanted it early and I'll buy it when released" etc, etc,. Tough, that line won't play. Don't even try it. I'm of the mind that those that think they got it "legitimately" from another iTunes account should face the exact same repercussions but we will wait and see on that one. It will certainly be what I'll be recommending.
Wow leave the internet for a few hours and everyone seems to have nabbed MC5 whoever leaked there account details should have some serious reprucussions from it - at least not be given any more GL games (although that's probably a given). Can't believe someone would e that stupid! Bit of a bummer, but like Forrest said 'It Happens' Also Rip (as usual) has said all the logical things on this, and answered pretty much any question that you could rant about, so don't. Oh and don't blame this on GL (which someone probably will)
Hmm, not sure about the update thing. When Real Racing 3 was softlaunched, I've downloaded it with an fake account and when it was released worldwide I've updated it directly with my main account without any problems. I'm sure these ppl can still update it if they also buy the game with their main account. Whatever, GL has to take actions against this. Hope they've learned from this BIG mistake Oops Sry, true what you've said. Can't blame GL for other peoples stupitidy.
Yeah GL is not the one to blame. But I can't stress it enough. They need to reset everyone's accounts and the leaderboards before launch. They shouldn't have gotten early access and, most importantly, a head start.
As some are touching on, I think the biggest problem will nit be with the leaderboard positions but infact the level and unlocks of the player. Some of the skills look pretty powerful, and although skill remains a prevalent factor it will be very unfair when we get the game on launch day and are facing people with all the attachments for the highest weapon as well as a fully completed skill tree.
Huh, I thought apps redeemed pre-release couldn't be redownloaded (wouldn't show up on the download list of an Account) until they were actually released.
Anyone knows if we have to choose a new nickname especially for MC5 or would it be the same as the one used in GameCenter?
Not at launch. Ryan has mentioned it here and on twitter a couple of times. Supposedly it was (name removed) who leaked the game. And apparently people are still downloading the game and are able to play it as well
No, he put out the cracked version. It was another "person" who leaked their account from which he sourced it. And he is making some bold claims that I sincerely hope come back to bite him on the ass legally.
It can. It's not straightforward and I won't detail it for obvious reasons but yeah, it can be redownloaded.
Pirating is very harmful in two very different spectrums... Obviously we have the direct loss of income from products, a very sad fate for the developer . In addition, as time passes, the amount of effort, driving force and creativety behind newer products being developed are declining, leaving a product that is subpar, unoriginal, and hackneyed. Take the music industry for example. Pirating music was very easy in the late 90's, now we have the industry today; a cash grab of product lines and appeal to specific demographics. The same phenomenon can be seen with the Movie industry. Honestly pirating is the worst to happen to media. The degradation of creativity is in direct correlation with the increases on pirating... Atleast, in my personal opinion..
