If it was simply a toggle switch like problem, they would have fixed it in 3 days max. Not trying to defend Gameloft, but they seem like the first company actually taking a lot of risk to make an ipad 4 version that is significantly better than the ipad 3 version. I was wondering when this would happen, and a little sad to see it not going so well. As you say, Saying "wellllll we tried and it didnt work so well" is a horrible excuse. C'mon I agree with you, that is no excuse for this. However, they did take the initiative to do it, with huge risks to them, like negative reviews, refunds, press, etc... They could just have easily kept the ipad 3&4 versions essentially the same with maybe some blur effect addition, but they didn't. They tried to make it retina. So I and some others will be patient, with some tech demo type things such as joystick support and ipad retina. I don't think it is as simple as reading their tweet and expecting a fix in one or two days. Again, I'm not defending them, and I am a worse boat as you ipad 4 owners in that I have been waiting for Gameloft Duo Gamer Support for a couple of months.... Not days... But anyway, since there is talk about ipad 5 releasing early again for some reason, once the ipad 5 releases, then the focus will be on ipad retina 3d graphics games, and at that time, the ipad 4 versions won't be going through the growing pains like it is now. Anyway, I know this is not helping, just saying that Gameloft deserves a little understanding for trying to help ipad 4 with retina graphics. The more bashing they get, they and other developers, will just make ipad 4 versions clones of ipad 3 versions. That is all. Gameloft will do something to resolve the problem, they always have, the even fixed Nova 3 so it works flawlessly for my ipad 3, which impressed me. It just takes them a little time. How long? Well, that is the question. I really don't think this is a simple toggle switch issue. I'm sure they are having meetings discussing whether to go with the full retina version, or going back to a version like the ipad 3. Time will tell.
Great post! Every point you make is valid as far as pushing forward with retina. However I can't accept that it WAS NOT a mistake meant for a later update. Full retina support is a big line item on release notes and was nowhere to be found on the release notes proving it was not ready for prime time. I do seriously think someone just screwed up and that's that. They were most likely testing it out and when it came time to submit it they forgot to take the retina assets out of the game or disable them. Of course I know it takes a ton of time to optimize which is probably what they were doing when this whole mess happened.
Well Minigore 2 is an example of that supposedly where they uploaded the wrong build. It was crazy, there were no monsters to kill in that dual stick shooter. It was funny. But they reuploaded the right build, or fixed the original build and uploaded, and it was fixed by the next day. This case with Gameloft, just doesn't feel like it to me. It seems more like a retina build that may have been pushed out too early. Whatever the case, I do think it is going to take a little time to resolve, it's already been a couple of days, and nothing, so it might be a little bit. But look forward to full retina on the ipad 4, and playing with the Gameloft Duo Gamer Joystick at some point. Hopefully sometime soon. It will come though, I trust Gameloft, they are probably doing their best to rectify the situation.
It also has an old chip. I think it has trouble running the game, not running retina. Remember that's only like 940x680. Nothing compared to 2048x1536.
I'm still wanting to know why they haven't added duo gamer support yet. It can't be that difficult to add, after all it is gamelofts official controller. Mc3 supports the duo gamer and that's the exact same control scheme as mc4. As for the retina problem, the campaign mode runs perfectly with no lag on my ipad 4, it's just multiplayer that is a complete mess. Therefore I think they should turn off retina for multiplayer but keep it for campaign.
I really hope that Gameloft opens up the protocol for the joystick, cause it is an awesome joystick. I just got an icade core, and am enjoying that with a ton of games supported like phoenix hd, tabletop racing, danmaku 2, and hundreds of others. The duo joystick has even better potential than the icade due to being a true xbox type controller, but needs to open its protocol to all games. It would seriously rock. I was playing Heroes of order and chaos with Jbruu today with my Gameloft duo gamer, and man the joystick rocks. I wanna play with it on games like mutant storm, beat hazard, infinity field, etc, then it would sell well and be really successful. Curious why impressions of the ipad 4 version seem all over the place in here. Guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Or maybe there are slightly diiferent versions of the ipad 4 cpu/gpu. Who knows.
Most impressions aren't all over the place. The campaign runs just as bad....try aftermath level and get back to me. And no there are not different versions of the ipad 4 CPU. Where do some of you guys come up with this stuff???? Haha.
It was a joke, but who knows, maybe it is true from all the posts in here. Maybe Apple had some leftover Samsung cpus and threw some in, and those ipad 4's fun this game flawlessesly... Or maybe, there are some of you playing the ipad 4 versions on shrooms... Okay, okay, Will go back to playing Dead Trigger and my shooms. Sorry about the ipad 4 cpu joke...
Bad bad bad Oh god I'm so bad at this game. K/D climbed from 0.10 to 0.11. Anyway, you guys should consider the fact that the decisions for retina implementations, dates of updates etc. must be coordinated between the dev teams and the higher-ups in marketing etc. Usually in large-scale companies, before the grunts can do anything, they need approval from higher-ups, who may or may not care about the issues. Consider the scenario: Higher-ups decide to push retina onto iPad4 for marketing purposes. They rush the dev team. Due to apple policies, they have to meet certain submission times. Patch gets pushed through, after a few days feedback starts coming in. It's a semi-flop. Simply reverting all the changes to the previous build (including other fixes, possible changes to game code or network protocol) would be a disaster. At one point, some higher up has to decide that a new fix must be made on a newer revision of the game. A team has to be designated, submission times have to be negociated with apple (probably). Sure, they could turn off the retina as a hotfix, but i doubt it would happen instantly. I also have no idea what apple's terms for submissions are. Either way, if retina implementation really was a rush-push from marketing, I doubt they'd just be ok with disabling it. So they'd have to work even harder at it. I have my doubts about the devs failing to notice the performance issues with the new patch on ipad4, it's much more likely that they were told by higher-ups to meet a deadline, but i'm just guessing here. I don't see how retina can just be toggled off or on by mistake. It's a different resolution very likely requiring different texture packs, polygon models, etc. etc. and while it may be possible that they whoopsied a higher resolution by mistake using (maybe) higher-polygon counts and effects more optimized for lower res, my bet is probably on lack of proper people allocation for QA or other similar issues, since some of the ipad owners here claimed that performance varies widely on a map-by-map basis. Most likely, proper retina optimization would require a complete redesign of most of the in-game models, textures and effects, effectively redoing much of the art. That's a huge undertaking. Still, remains to be seen.
While your statement makes sense, if you check the release notes there is no mention of retina. IT WAS A MISTAKE. You don't think marketing would make sure the release notes include a line about amazing retina graphics for iPad 4? Also the Gameloft forum manager confirmed that this was NOT supposed to have the retina in this update.
Well the alternative is that nobody plas the game cuz the damn thing won't even run right. I'd rather have bad graphics on a playable game than this unplayable nice looking crap. I hope they fix it soon, I'd really rather not delete it.
